Two people suffered serious injuries. An Osaka police official said a woman was killed, but it was not immediately clear how seriously the 21 others were hurt. The Kyodo News agency said the accident was caused by a broken axle on one of the six cars on the roller coaster at Expoland in Osaka, 408 kilometres (255 miles) west of Tokyo. The accident occurred in the middle of Japan's "Golden Week" holiday, when many families pack amusement parks and other tourist sites. The park was closed following the accident, according to park officials, who said an investigation is under way. The stand-up roller coaster holds up to 24 passengers. Expoland opened as an amusement area for the city's 970 International Exposition.

Roller Coaster Accident (06/22/1997)
Mulitple injuries at an amusement park after a roller coaster locked up at the bottom of an eight story loop. At about 8:20 last night the Quantum Loop in Seabreeze Park came to a screaming halt when one of the wheels on the roller coaster malfunctioned. Several passengers were taken to area hospitals, but according to officials, none of the injuries appeared to be serious. Police were not releasing names at the time of the accident, and the cause is still under investigation. According to the owner of the park, John Norris, one of the wheels locked as the train was descending down the first hill. He added that the riders were probably hurt when the train jerked to a stop. The ride opened for the first time in 1994, and Norris said that they have not had any problems with it. However, an employee says that there were problems earlier in the day with the ride. Passengers who rode the Quantum earlier in the day said that the ride was shaking, and they were nervous on it. Norris told reporters that he could not remember the last time a Seabreeze ride malfunctioned. Yet residents of the area seem to remember one incident two weeks ago involving a slow speed kiddie ride that malfunctioned and took around the track. The employee in charge of the ride supposedly left the ride to seek help, leaving the child on the ride screaming, and zipping around the tracks. The ride will probably remain closed for a while; until the Department of Labor investigates the incident.

Authorities say one train rear-ended another on the "California Screamin"' roller coaster at Disney's California Adventure theme park. Most of the victims had minor neck and back injuries. The cause of the accident is still unknown. Anaheim city spokesman John Nicoletti said 48 people were on the ride at the time of the collision. Fifteen people, including two children, were taken to a hospital. The rest were examined at the scene and released. The Disneyland Resort issued a statement late on Friday saying Disney officials were taking all necessary steps to help those affected by this incident. It was the second accident in four months at a Disney park in Anaheim. In March, a four-year-old boy broke a finger and severed the tip of his thumb while on a Disneyland ride called the Storybook Land Canal Boats. In December, four people were hurt when a float at a Disneyland parade struck four people.

But, it's a tragedy that he was so easily able to get over those fences and get in." 8. Various of roller coaster 10. Close up of roller coaster STORYLINE: A US teenager was decapitated by a roller coaster after he hopped a pair of fences and entered a restricted area on Saturday at Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park in Austell, Georgia, authorities said. Six Flags officials are uncertain why the unidentified 17-year-old, from Columbia, South Carolina, scaled two six-foot fences and passed signs that said the restricted area was both off-limits and dangerous to visitors, said spokeswoman Hela Sheth in a news release. No one riding on the roller coaster was injured, Sheth said. Authorities were investigating reports from witnesses who said the teenager jumped the fences to retrieve a hat he lost while riding the Batman roller coaster, said Cobb County police. The teenager was with another boy who also entered the restricted area but was not injured. Police have declined to release the teenager's name until an autopsy is completed. The teenager was struck and killed by the roller coaster, which police said was going at full speed. The ride's top speed is 50 miles per hour, according to the park's website. Six Flags said it closed the roller coaster after the Saturday afternoon accident out of respect for the teenager's family. The ride is expected to reopen on Monday, a spokeswoman said. The teenager and his parents were at the park with a group from the Oakey Spring Baptist Church near Springfield, South Carolina, police said. A visitor to the park on Sunday said he feels for the boy's family, but there is only so much the park can do to keep visitors safe. "He must have known that he was going somewhere where he shouldn't have gone. But, it's a tragedy that he was so easily able to get over those fences and get in," said Kevin Boland.

TAPE_NUMBER: EF99/0960 IN_TIME: 07:38:18 - 09:02:30 // 12:22:23 - 19:26:49 LENGTH: 01:28 SOURCES: ABC RESTRICTIONS: No Access N America/CBC/Internet FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat A roller coaster accident on the boardwalk at ocean city killed two people and left two others seriously hurt. Witnesses saw one car crash into another on the Wild Wonder ride, a two story roller coaster with cars designed to look like animals. The accident occurred around 10 p.m. at the seaside resort, located about ten miles south of Atlantic city. A roller coaster at a New Jersey beach resort is closed after a crash that killed two passengers Saturday night. Two children and two adults were taken to the hospital. One child and one adult later died at the shore memorial hospital. Another adult and child are currently listed in serious condition. A spokeswoman for the park is not commenting. State inspectors will go over the Wild Wonder ride Sunday at Gillian's Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, New Jersey. The Wild Wonder is a two-story roller coaster with cars designed to look like animals. Initial police reports indicate that the accident was probably caused by a mechanical malfunction. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It looked to me like the car didn't stop, it banged into the cars there, just like it is now. Usually there's one car sitting up here and when that car leaves this car goes down, that probably didn't happen except that car didn't stop and just banged into the rest of them" SUPER CAPTION: Nick Lamara, Neighbour A string of accidents have hit the nation's amusement parks this summer, although officials say the number of serious injuries is down from last year. The ocean city ride was closed after the accident Saturday night. A spokesman said inspectors would be at the pier on Sunday to check the roller coaster and won't reopen again until an investigation has been conducted into the ride's safety.
