They covered the eyes and tied the hands of the security officers, including the policemen on duty. After that they entered the grid and control room. They set explosives in control room and blew it up. Two or three 500 kilo volt transformers and a 220 kilo volt transformer were destroyed. They kidnapped four and killed seven people." 7. Police officers with blanket covered bodies 8. Close of arm and hand covered with blood 9. Man crying 10. Wide of scene, with damaged wall in the background STORYLINE Several dozen militants armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades attacked a power grid station in northwestern Pakistan before dawn on Tuesday, killing seven people and taking four hostage, police said. The attack on the outskirts of Peshawar city occurred at around 0200 local time (0900 GMT), according to the local police chief in the area. The militants first killed two people at the scene of the attack and took nine with them, he said. A local resident said the attackers blindfolded and tied up security officers and police before blowing up the control room. Five of the hostages were killed as the militants were fleeing and being pursued by police. The bodies were found about a kilometre (half-a-mile) away from the grid station. Four of the abducted were still missing. The dead included three policemen and four government power workers. The men still missing are all power workers. The grid is located near Khyber, part of Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region bordering Afghanistan, the main sanctuary for the Taliban in the country. It supplies electricity to a large part of Peshawar, and many areas of the city were still without power on Tuesday morning because the station was damaged in the attack. No group immediately admitted the attack, but Taliban militants waging a bloody insurgency against the government have staged scores of attacks against security officials, government personnel and civilians. The Pakistani military has launched dozens of operations against the Taliban in the tribal region, but the militants continue to carry out frequent attacks. The group has also made recent gains in an area of Khyber called the Tirah Valley, which potentially provides them easier access to Peshawar. There have been concerns that the militants could step up attacks in the run-up to parliamentary elections on 11 May in an attempt to derail the vote. Pan across roof of stadium during fireworks at end of performance STORYLINE North Korea put on a massive show of synchronised dance and gymnastics on Monday night, in a performance that this year is promoting the country's stated aim of achieving prosperity by 2012, the year which will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, the country's founding leader. APTN North Korea filmed thousands of spectators watching choreographed, colourful and lavish spectacle at Pyongyang's May Day Stadium. The performance, called "Arirang" after a folk story well-known in both North and South Korea, features a cast of approximately 100-thousand, according to organisers. Many of the performers are schoolchildren and students. "Arirang" displays dance and gymnastics in a way that North Korea has honed over decades of similar mass performances. Thousands of North Korean schoolchildren are trained to make the backdrop of the performance, holding flashcards, which they change in rapid sequence according to an exact grid, creating a changing screen displaying images and slogans. This year's performance is expected to run until October. In previous years, "Arirang" has continued its run longer than expected. According to foreign travel agencies that specialise in tours to North Korea, tickets for foreigners to watch "Arirang" this year cost from 56 to 340 US dollars each. International visitors described their appreciation after Monday's performance. "It was really breathtaking. I have never seen something similar in the rest of the world," Albrecht Thomas, a German tourist told APTN North Korea. "Arirang" was first staged in 2002, and since then it has been put on in 2005, 2007, and 2008.

Demonstrator showing sign that reads "Obama go home" 17. Wide of demonstration STORYLINE Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Santiago on Sunday to protest against the visit of US President Barack Obama and the cooperation agreement that the Chilean Government led by President Sebastian Pinera signed last Friday with the US to receive help in developing nuclear energy projects. The demonstration, organised by Greenpeace, drew a colourful crowd with people who showed their disappointment at the government's decision and their concern about possible future accidents following Japan's Fukushima disaster. "We are a seismic country and we face the same risk," protester Claudia Hernandez said. Matias Asun, a Greenpeace activist, said that Chile should pursue clean and renewable energy. Chilean President Pinera will host Obama for a one day visit on Monday. Last Friday, Chile and the US signed a nuclear energy accord even as fears of radiation spread in Japan after a devastating earthquake and tsunami severely damaged some of its nuclear reactors. Chile's booming growth is being held back by limits on its imported energy supply and outdated power grid. Both Pinera and Obama have said the solution is new technologies and "clean energy," which they define as including nuclear as well as more sustainable renewable sources such as solar, wind and geothermal power. Opponents say even discussing long-term plans for nuclear energy in a country as prone to earthquakes as Chile distracts from other progress on securing domestic supplies. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Watkins, 2012 Olympic medal designer: "I am absolutely delighted with it. They've done a great job. I mean, I don't think it could have been done any better. I did my best and it's come out well." 5. Pan from 2012 Olympic gold medal to Watkins 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Watkins, 2012 Olympic medal designer: "It was designed on a computer which means that there is.... once you've got the basic architecture of a form together it's all down to a lot of tweaking, a lot of moving detail around and so on and that went on for some months I think." 7. Various of Edwards with medal in front of 2012 Olympic logo 8. Pan from Jonathan Edwards to medal 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Edwards, Chair of LOCOG Athletes Committee: "I think it's a very simple design, a very clean design. You know, you've got the logo on the back, if there's a back or front, I'm not quite sure.... but the logo there, very symbolic of London. The River Thames going through it. Then the other side, a very, I think arresting image of the Goddess of Victory. So I think that, and the size and the weight of it, it really does feel like a quality work of art." 10. Journalist posing for photo with medal 11. Pan of Olympic medals 12. Close-up pan of medals 13. Close-up of gold medal 14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Edwards, Chair of LOCOG Athletes Committee: "I think they look great and from a point of view of the athletes you want something I think, you know, is representative of the great performances they've given to win them. And I think this is a high quality medal. It's big it's heavy. It feels like a lot of time and care and effort has gone into it. And I think the test of it is when the athletes actually get them in 2012, and they've heard the anthem, the first thing they'll do, is they'll pick it up like this and they'll look at it and sort of, you know, feel it and it screams quality and I think they'll be very, very pleased with the time and effort the organising committee has gone into in order to produce it for them." 15. Watkins with Edwards STORYLINE: As London marked one year until the opening of the Olympic Games on Wednesday, the much coveted gold, silver and bronze medals were revealed. For any competitor an Olympic medal, which for London's 2012 Games comes on a deep purple ribbon, is a must-have accessory for their sporting career. The front of all summer Olympic medals show images of Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, stepping out of the depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the host city. For the reverse, metalwork designer David Watkins, the 2010 Royal Designer for Industry, created a design on five symbolic elements. It also has an image which is like a "force field of radiating lines". The five symbolic elements include a dished background which suggests an arena or a bowl similar to the design of an amphitheatre. The core emblem is supposed to be a metaphor for the modern city, and looks like a crystalline or jewel-like growth. The medal includes a grid which is supposed to reflect a sense of being together and outreach. The image is supposed to capture a feeling of radiating energy to match the athletes' achievements and effort. The River Thames appears as a fluttering baroque ribbon. There is also a square in the centre so that the overall medal has the imprint of a square in a circle. Watkins said he's pleased with how the medals have turned out. "I am absolutely delighted with it. They've done a great job. I mean, I don't think it could have been done any better. I did my best and it's come out well." The Olympic medals weigh between 375-400 grammes, they're eighty-five millimetres in diameter and seven millimetres thick. Watkins said it took a lot of hard work to get the medal design right, a process which took months to complete. Former British triple-jumper Jonathan Edwards won gold in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 as well as a silver medal in Atlanta in 1996. He is chairman of the LOCOG Athletes Committee who were involved in the research development of the medal brief. He was impressed with the final design. "It really does feel like a quality work of art," he said. Edwards believes that when athletes are presented with their medals over the 16 days of the Olympics they'll be impressed. "I think they look great and from a point of view of the athletes you want something I think, you know, is representative of the great performances they've given to win them," Over 2,100 medals will be awarded in 302 Olympic ceremonies at more than 30 venues. Production of the Olympic medals will start later this year. They will be done at the Royal Mint's headquarters in Llantrisant, South Wales, UK.
