Rainbow flames experiment
Rainbow flames experiment. Eight chemicals burning with different coloured flames to produce a rainbow effect. From left to right, the chemicals are: potassium chloride (KCl), lead nitrate (Pb[NO3]2), barium chloride (BaCl2), copper (II) sulphate (CuSO4), boric acid (H3BO3), sodium chloride (NaCl), strontium chloride (SrCl2) and lithium chloride (LiCl). The fuel used to produce the flames is methanol, affecting the colours produced for some of the chemicals. The metal ions in the chemicals produce different colours according to their characteristic emission spectrum. This forms the basis of flame tests used to identify certain chemicals.
