27044 INCREDIBLE PSYCHEDELIC WWII WAR BOND FILM / AURORATONE MOVIE
Made during WWII, this incredible U.S. Treasury Department movie showcases the Nazi's passion for banning books, art and music that displeased them. The film is what is known as an "Auroratone". here is some information about these films, taken from the Northwest Film Forum which compiled them for an event in 2010. Auroratone movies were created in the early 1940s by British inventor and mystic Cecil Stokes (1910-1956), who intended for them to be used as a therapeutic aid in the treatment of post traumatic stress, manic depression, anxiety disorders, and similar conditions. They typically consisted of abstract visuals — often time-lapse photography of crystalline growth filmed in polarized light — accompanied by slow, mildly sad and melancholic music.

Stokes was awarded a patent on his film process: ?Process and Apparatus for Producing Musical Rhythm in Color? (US Patent no. 2,292,172, awarded Aug. 4, 1942; application submitted May 24, 1940).

Stokes formed the Auroratone Foundation of America to distribute his films; one of his partners in the effort was Bing Crosby, who contributed songs to a number of them. Auroratone films were donated to a number of hospitals in the US and England, where they were used as part of therapy.

According to reports published in Billboard magazine, Stokes later hoped to make the films available to the general public in ?film jukeboxes, commonly known as Scopitone machines, which were popular in bars and lounges during the 1940s and ?50s. In the summer of 1945, he made a presentation to a number of such distributers in Chicago, but the businessmen demurred, reportedly saying ?the haziness of the color pattern – or lack of pattern – made the process unsuitable for adaption to jukes. (Too weird for bars in Peoria.) The record appears to fade after that. Stokes died less than 10 years later.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? AGE - aka SLOT MACHINE AGE
London and Llandudno

People are seen looking at a jukebox - and making a selection - its called a scopitone machine as it has a screen, which shows members of a group, Sandra Barry and Her Boyfriends - the boys are seen trying out guitars in a guitar shop, and the group are then seen performing 'Really Gonna Shake'.

Note: Love the gold boots ! See also 277.03 for the main slot machine sequence and CP 489 Cuts

This is a fabulous pop item - I think that the band is actually called "Sandra Barry and Her Boys" - really good for swinging sixties stuff, the beat group scene, pop groups, groovy girl dancing and a great song. Sandra's "Boys" try to persuade her to do the shake and she repeats, "No, no, I don't want to shake!" several times. They eventually get her to "Shake", she gets off her stool, takes off her gold fringed poncho and grooves to the beat - I love it! I guess that the scopitone was a prototype video jukebox.

The Boys went on to be known as "The Action" - they had a strong mod following - JH.

56004 1949 HAWAII MUSIC "SOUNDIE" 1940s MUSIC VIDEO ALOHA OE MATTY MALNECK ORCHESTRA
Released by Castle Films for the home market as part of the "Music Album" series of 16mm films, this short "Hawaiian Rhythm" presents Hawaiian music beginning with "Aloha Oe". It dates to 1949, and can be considered a "Soundie" -- a 1940s music video. These films were released not only for private use on personal projectors, but some of them were made to be used in a 16mm film jukebox called a Panoram or its more modern equivalent, a Scopitone. In this case, music was performed by Matty Malneck and his Orchestra as part of the soundtrack to the Universal film "Hawaiian Nights", a 1939 American romantic comedy film directed by Albert S. Rogell. Matthew Michael "Matty" Malneck (1903 – 1981) was an American jazz violinist, songwriter, and arranger whose big band recorded for Brunswick, Columbia, and Decca. Malneck's group also played in the film St. Louis Blues (1939) and You're in the Army Now (1941).

The film starts with shots of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, including shots of surfing and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. At :44, "My Lonelineness Has Ended" is sung by Constance Moore, an American singer and actress who had signed with Universal. The segment shows a luau in progress, and includes a rhythm performance starting at about 2:40 and a hula dance at 3:30. At 4:09, "Hawaii Sang Me to Sleep" is performed with a slide guitar and many "Hawaiian maidens" performing an elaborate dance number which has a tap dancing finale. At 7:01, more "Aloha Oe" and shots are shown of Waikiki once again, surfing, and catamarans, with the ship SS Lurline in the background as we say goodbye to Hawaii.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
