ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: AUSTIN POWERS PREMIERE
TAPE_NUMBER: EN9923/a IN_TIME: 11:12:13 LENGTH: 06:42 SOURCES: APTN/NEW LINE CINEMA RESTRICTIONS: no resale film/video clips FEED: SCRIPT: xfa LOS ANGELES 8 JUNE 1999 MORE SHAG-TASTIC TALES FROM THE MAN OF MYSTERY Movie-goers are well used to screen superheroes being brought back for follow-up movies; think of the never-ending BOND franchise or BRUCE WILLIS's Die Hard hero or the BATMAN trilogy. - But never, in the history of movie heroes, has there been a superhero like AUSTIN POWERS, and now the secret agent, playboy extraordinaire and international man of mystery is back for a second helping in AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME. - MIKE MYERS returns as the British secret agent from the Sixties with the bad teeth and a raging sex drive who gets unfrozen and let loose on the 1990s. Once again he has to do battle with his evil arch enemy, also played by Myers, called Dr Evil. - His sexy sidekick from the last film, played by LIZ HURLEY, makes a cameo in the new movie, but the new love interest is CIA agent FELICITY SHAGWELL, played by HEATHER GRAHAM. - ROBERT WAGNER is back as Dr Evil's 'Number Two' and the original director JAY ROACH is back in the driving seat. - In the new film, Powers has to travel back in time to the 1960s as he chases after Dr Evil who has stolen his 'mojo'. - Myers takes on a new character with an obese bagpipe playing Scotsman called Fat Bastard. Also look out for ROB LOWE who plays Wagner's younger 1960s' self. - Curiously the first film, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, did very disappointingly at the American box office. However when it came out on video it was a massive success which meant the studio was then willing to finance a sequel. - This time out Myers and the film-makers are hoping fans will make the trip to the cinema to see the sequel on the big screen. The film got a showing at the Cannes Film Festival, but the big diary event was last night's premiere in L.A. - Myers, Wagner and Graham all turned out for the premiere. MICHAEL YORK, who returns in the sequel as the British secret service boss, was also on hand. - They were joined by a galaxy of Powers' celebrity fans including Phantom Menace star JAKE LLOYD, Baywatch star DAVID HASSELHOFF, PATRICK STEWART, SHARON STONE, ROSIE PEREZ, ED BURNS, VINCE VAUGHN, TOM HANKS' wife RITA WILSON, TORI SPELLING and naturally some go-go dancers - The music industry was heavily represented with ELVIS COSTELLO, DONNY OSMOND, GREEN DAY, KENNY G, ERIC CLAPTON and THE SPICE GIRLS. Naturally for a movie set against the Swinging Sixties, music has to be an essential part of the mix and all of the above artists appear on the star-studded soundtrack. Burt Bacarach and Madonna are also among the big names lending their vocal support to the film. - ( Subscribers please check your local release dates for above film to ensure use of film clips comes within the promotional window for your territory) SHOTLIST: SHOWS : TRAILER "AUSTIN POWERS 2: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME" ; SHOT OF PALM TREES AT PREMIERE ; GO GO GIRLS DANCING AT PREMIERE ; TILT UP "THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME" POSTER; VS GUESTS IN SIXTIES ATTIRE; C.A. SOT Catherine Zeta-Jones: "An opportunity that they would have had to drag me kicking and screaming if they hadn't have let me do it, really I never thought for one minute in my lifetime that I would have to pull out my dance shoes and get up there and do it and have so much fun with this character. I had a ball. In a way it was like now the response is so great and we all want that to happen but it's like I;m taking my baby to its first day of school and I'm saying 'goodbye, don't forget to eat, good luck!' It's strange because you've been cocooned in this world of song and dance and period and it's just hard to let it go sometimes." 3. B-roll Catherine Zeta-Jones 4. Clip 'Chicago' 5. SOT Rob Marshall, director: "I think we all were concerned could we make it work. When we went into rehearsals we had this six week rehearsal process and it was during that time that we all inched our way forward every day, and you know I love these people so much and I had great faith in them so I never thought 'they're not going to make it', but we certainly worked hard to get there." 6. B-roll rehearsal Catherine Zeta Jones 7. Rehearsal Renee Zellweger 8. SOT Renee Zellweger: "An unexpected privilege, truly a privilege, I mean come on! The reality of it, not making the first cut on 42nd Street with the people who are on this stage. Every single day working with these people who have been doing this since they were so small, with Bob Fossey no less and over and over again and now teaching it, and so beautifully. I mean, masters of this craft. To be alongside them, granted I felt like a green bean most of the time, 'Bring in the green bean!'. I mean the dancers and the thing and then the green bean. But a privilege to be the green bean on the set that's for sure! I loved it." 9.Clip 'Chicago' 11. B-roll dancing 12. SOT Catherine Zeta -Jones: "It was real dancing, like being lifted up in the splits and real jazz and I was with some of the best dancers in the world and I would not let myself look like I was the one who should have been at the back, who just got lucky and was in the front row. So it was hard and just having a baby and just having not done any of it for years and years and year." 13. Clip 'Chicago' 14. SOT Richard Gere: "He'd never done a feature before but I saw the work he'd done on television and I thought he was terrific, liked him a lot, liked the approach he had, felt like I could work with him and I told him and said 'look, I can sing this, I don't know if I can tap dance '. He said, 'well we'll see'." 15 Clip 'Chicago' GREED, FAME AND ALL THAT JAZZ IN 'CHICAGO' 'Chicago' took years to bring to the screen and came with an unlikely cast in Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere, and a first time director - but the excellent reviews and eight Golden Globe nominations suggest they were right all along. The dark story of corruption, greed and celebrity in prohibition era Chicago first appeared as a play in 1926, but it wasn't until the 1975 musical version, and particularly the 1996 revival, that the show really took off. And the current film, directed by Choreographer and TV helmer ROB MARSHALL, has been hailed as capturing the essence of the singing and dancing jazz extravaganza. Zellweger ('Bridget Jones', 'Nurse Betty') plays Roxie Hart, a struggling singer and dancer in Prohibition era Chicago who goes on trial for the murder of her lover. In the same prison is the equally deadly show girl Velma Kelly, played by Catherine Zeta Jones. Richard Gere plays undefeated but sleezy lawyer Billy Flynn, who is representing Velma in her double murder case, and keeping the story on the front page. When Roxie asks him to represent her as well as can't resist the opportunity and also turns her into a front page star, and a rival for public's fickle attention. Roxie begins to crave the fame that has eluded her previously, and the media story generates plenty of heat between the two women. Director Marshall contrasts the dark, moody but realistic portrayal of Roxie's plight with the huge musical song and dance numbers played out in her imagination. I've done it in the past when I had Mulholland Drive cafe with Patrick Swayze and I wanted to think who I could cast as the celebrity partner in this restaurant and I was sitting at home thinking about that, my wife came home and she just came from the dentist and the dentist mentioned to her that he happens to live next door to Britney Spears' manager." APTN File. London, UK. 25 March 2002 8. B-Roll Britney Spears VNR New York, USA. June 2002 9. Vs Interior 10. SOT Bobby Ochs: "It's not a theme restaurant, it's really just a sophisticated upscale New York restaurant. So we started to think of adjectives that reflect Britney's personality and who she is and adjectives such as youthful and sexy and vibrant and energetic and feminine and all of those things and we put together the plan with the colours and the fabrics, I think bring all that to life. We looked at her as this blossoming flower and so when you come in there's a screen, an 8 by 10 video screen that project pictures of flowers blossoming, it changes every 30 seconds. So she indirectly had her input that way." 11. Vs Menu 12. SOT Bobby Ochs: "Her favourite dishes are southern fried chicken, we had that on the menu, so she was influential in that respect." 13. Vs Kitchen EATING BRITNEY Other than having a baby and bringing out your own clothes line, it's the number one celebrity accessory. That's right - opening your own restaurant. Which is exactly what Britney Spears has done with Nyla, a Louisianian brasserie in the heart of New York. Britney was heavily involved in every aspect of the restaurant, which is based in The Dylan Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. She even designed the logo, which is written in her own handwriting. The eatery was originally due to be called Pinky, which is the pet name given to her by ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. But after their acrimonious break-up, she changed it to Nyla - named after her two favourite places, New York and her home state of Louisiana. The food also reflects Spears' Southern roots. Selections include lobster salad with fried green tomatoes and salmon with Mississippi caviar. Prices are mid-range, with the average cost of a main course about fifteen dollars. The singer is co-running the restaurant with entrepreneur Bobby Ochs, who has also collaborated with Patrick Swayze. Their place 'Mulholland Drive' has since closed. But Ochs insists that although the singer's fame will no doubt help to bring in the punters, Nyla is no theme park. Britney rejected a more gaudy interior, in favour of pinks and reds and candles. "It's not a monument to Britney. We are really going to run a sophisticated upscale New York restaurant in an upscale hotel." Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, David Copperfield, J-Lo and Cher are all due to attend the opening party. If there is a downside, then it could be Ochs' name. He is a famous face on the New York food scene and at one point, John Travolta was even considering making a movie about his life called 'It Ain't About Food.' However, Ochs' celebrity-associated restaurants haven't always had the best success. Two of his recent ventures - The Mulholland Drive Caf? (with Patrick Swayze) and Peaches (which he co-owned with Donald Trump's ex, Marla Maples), both went under, the latter at a particularly alarming speed. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: TOP TEN FILMS
TAPE_NUMBER: EN9952 IN_TIME: 11:14:15 LENGTH: 08:23 SOURCES: APTN/VARIOUS FILM COMPANIES RESTRICTIONS: No re-use/re-sale of film/video clips without clearance, See end of script No access Internet FEED: SCRIPT: xfa STORY: TOP TEN FILMS LOCATION: VARIOUS DATE: FILE '99 With the year 2000 just around the corner, it's time to look at the films that viewers everywhere flocked to see during 1999. In a list compiled by Exhibitor Relations and A-C Nielsen in America, the most popular of film of the year was....surprise surprise, "Star Wars:The Phantom Menace". The much-awaited sequel to the Star Wars trilogy of the eighties grossed a total of $US429.9 million at the box office, not to mention the extra millions made from marketing spinoffs. Although reviews were mixed, with some critics condemning the epic saga as no more than an effects-laden extended videoclip, fans just kept on coming and it appears the force is still with us, whether we like it or not.... Writer/director/producer, GEORGE LUCAS puts the film's success down to it's successful combination of mythic themes and quirky characters. Moving away from the green screen and back to real people, child actor, HALEY JOEL OSMENT stunned critics and audiences alike with his remarkable performance in "The Sixth Sense". The supernatural thriller came in second to Star Wars in the popularity stakes with a total of $US275.2 million at the box office. Action man, BRUCE WILLIS also won points for his credible performance opposite Osment as Dr Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist who has to deal with a special young patient whose supernatural abilities will have harrowing consequences for both patient and doctor. Eight-year- old child Cole Sear (HALEY JOEL OSMENT) is haunted by dark secrets and visited by ghosts. The child is a helpless and reluctant channel for unknown visitors with unresolved problems. Written and directed by M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN (WIDE AWAKE), the film is fully in the spirit of such past chilling dramas as The Omen and Rosemary's Baby. With its gripping storyline, convincing dialogue and strong characterization, the thriller kept audiences guessing up until the very last minute, literally. Another popular thriller that took everyone, especially Hollywood by surprise was the low-budget cult hit, "The Blair Witch Project". Co-written, directed and edited by young film makers, DANIEL MYRICK and EDUARDO SANCHEZ, the film proved a David in the face of Hollywood's Goliath. Made for the trifling sum of $US60,000, the tale took in a total of $US 140.5 million by the end of the year. On its opening weekend in the States it took $US24million, only $US2million less than the top box office film, "The Sixth Sense", also beating "Runaway Bride" and "The Thomas Crown Affair". One of the main reasons behind the success of The Blair Witch Project was the canny marketing campaign launched by Meyrick and Sanchez as early as June 1998. After a midnight screening of the film at the Sundance film festival in January of this year, Artisan Entertainment purchased the film for $US1million and began its marketing campaign in earnest. The Blair Witch website which had been started in June '98, even before the film was edited, became a magnet for curious fans. Artisan added journal entries by one of the characters, faked police reports and a history of the Blair Witch dating back to the 18th century, fooling fans into believing that the film was based on a real event. Myrick and Sanchez next found themselves at the highly prestigious Cannes Film festival where the film was invited to participate in the "Quinzaine des Realisateurs" sidebar section. "Blair Witch" puts a modern twist on the universal fear of the dark and things that go bump in the night. But if you're expecting another Scream-style gore-fest, think again. This chiller is very much a pseudo-documentary. The story revolves around three students' attempt to find out more about the legend of a witch who lived in the Black Hills Forest in Maryland and whose magic was most definitely black. The innovative way the film was made, including black and white 16mm film and Hi8 video, has everything to do with how it plays out on screen. An opening title card informs that, in October 1994, three young film makers hiked into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to shoot a documentary about the legend of the Blair Witch. The film-makers were never heard from again, but a year later their footage was found, an edited version of which constitutes the present feature. Another film which caught the imagine of audiences everywhere, was the cheeky, irresistably tongue-in-cheek comedy, "AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME" After the moderate success of the first Austin Powers film, writer/director, MIKE MYERS brought his swinging international man of mystery back to the big screen with remarkable results. The sequel proved the third most popular film in the States, taking a total of $US205.4 million. MYERS returns as the British secret agent from the Sixties with the bad teeth and a raging sex drive who gets unfrozen and let loose on the 1990s. Once again he has to do battle with his evil arch enemy, also played by Myers, called Dr Evil. His sexy sidekick from the first film, played by LIZ HURLEY, makes a cameo in the new movie, but the new love interest is CIA agent FELICITY SHAGWELL, played by HEATHER GRAHAM. Thanks to Myers, expressions like "Shagadelic baby" and "Mojo" became part of the vernacular of all self-respecting 1999 groovophiles. Like "Austin Powers", ADAM SANDLER'S "Big Daddy" also mined the comic vein with successful results. His highly juvenile story of a father's rite of passage to true adulthood scored seventh place in the US popularity stakes, taking in $US155.3 million. Sandler plays Sonny Doufax, a 32-year-old law school graduate who works one day a week as a tollbooth clerk. This spoiled, clownish, insult-dropping underachiever takes a break from his couch-potato life to form a friendship with a five-year-old tyke named Julian (played by identical twins Cole and Dylan Sprouse) who has been deposited at the door of his Manhattan apartment (According to the Department of Social Services, the boy is the illegitimate child of Sonny's absent roommate). Faced with an ultimatum from his girlfriend, who is tired of his aimless ways, raising the boy gives him a ready made solution. For sci-fi action with a futuristic twist, it seems nobody did it better than writer/directors, LARRY and ANDY WACHOWSKI. "THE MATRIX" which starred KEANU REEVES and LAURENCE FISHBURNE combined elements of a police thriller with kung fu action and time-warping special effects. Produced by JOEL SILVER at a cost of sixty million dollars, the thriller made $US171.4 million and proved the fifth most popular film in the States. The Wachowski's combined their talents as comic book artists and a fascination with Chinese action movies to produce some of the most original fight scenes in a major Hollywood picture. With its ultra-high speed bullet-time photography, its breath-catching combination of kung fu fighting and ear-splitting pyrotechnics and its sexy black costumes, THE MATRIX is one adrenalin-fuelled movie. Moving onto the romantic comedy genre, only the very cynical could not failed to be charmed by "NOTTING HILL", starring HUGH GRANT and JULIA ROBERTS. The film, which was shot in the busy Notting Hill district of London, followed the ups and downs of the relationship between a lowly bookshop owner (Grant) and a movie star (Roberts). Written by RICHARD CURTIS, the man behind "Four Weddings and A Funeral", the film illustrates that time-honoured maxim, "Love Conquers All"; even packs of gossip-hungry tabloid journalists... For Roberts, 1999 proved a blockbuster year, yielding not just one but two success stories. In "Runaway Bride", she teamed up with former "Pretty Woman" star, RICHARD GERE to play a woman with a penchant for bolting at the altar. The romantic comedy came in 9th with a total of $US151.8 million at the box office. But the most charming family film of the year was "TOY STORY 2", the sequel to the original 1995 computer generated story about a bunch of old-fashioned toys and their adventures together. Oscar winner TOM HANKS and Home Improvement's TIM ALLEN are back in the roles of sparring partners Woody and Buzz Lightyear. While all the original characters of the first Toy Story are back, from Mr and Mrs Potato Head to Slinky Dog, there's no shortage of new faces on the block. Woody has a new pal and potential love interest in the form of Jessie the cowgirl, who makes a big impression along with her excitable horse Bullseye and their wise old friend Stinky Pete the prospector. Disney also signed up a whole bevy of Barbie dolls for the new film, who make an unforgettable appearance in Al's Toy Barn. So far the film has taken $171.4 million in the States alone and if early reviews are any indication, Toy Story 2 could well surpass the first movie's 360 million dollar worldwide box office take. TAPE_NUMBER: EN0003 IN_TIME: 10:23:05 LENGTH: 09:40 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: All No access Internet, Music rights must be cleared. FEED: SCRIPT: xfa Title: Haute Couture fashion Date: 15th? Jan Location: Paris Italian fashion house, VERSACE, presented its High Fashion collection on Saturday (15/1)in Paris to a celebrity studded audience. Donatella Versace, sister of the late Gianni, presented the Spring/Summer 2000 Haute Couture collection. The Versace collection is the first high profile show of the Haute Couture week that began on Saturday in the French capital. Critics have doubted the Italian designer's ability to imprint her own personality on her murdered brother's empire. But her first collection of the 21st century firmly established her designing credentials. Her show was feminine, mostly dresses in fresh lettuce green colours decroated with laser cutouts of leaves in leather or as lace appliques . There was the usual number of sexy gowns as well as snakeskin prints. 'Its more sophisticated - I'm growing up' said Donatella backstage. But the designer certainly has no trouble filling a front row. Rockstar LIAM GALLAGHER sat alongside his actress wife PATSY KENSIT, resplendent in full length Versace. ALL SAINTS girl group sparkled in studded pants alongside JOSEPH FIENNES. If there's any hope for a French successor to the great Yves Saint Laurent, it has to be JEAN-PAULl GAULTIER . Gaultier laid on glittering East Indian splendor in his Sunday spring haute couture show. His silk saris and sequin-clad models wowed the audience, many of whom shouted "bravo" as the show ended. The gilded setting was original and opulent - a 19th century mansion on the Place des Etats-Unis in Paris' chic 16th district, where society figure and patron of the arts Viscountess Marie-Laure de Noailles held brilliant soirees for many years until her death in 1970. French model, Laeticia Casta, voted the new Marianne for the year 2000, was part of the show wearing swimsuits and black laced evening dresses. Casta only participates in Gaultier's and Yves Saint Laurent's High Fashion shows and never does ready-to-wear collections. But despite the lure of the East, Gaultier gave everything his true French couture cachet. Cut, fabrics, details were just about perfect. The models followed sari-clad maidens scattering petals. But with no music and little glitz, the clothes were the focus. There was "Monsoon," - a slick, slim, faille trench coat worn with a bolero, a body-stocking, a wraparound skirt, and a ginger turban. Or "Lucknow" - a black suit, with tailored jacket and straight stretch pants. There were also double-breasted bathing suits that could be worn with jacket-skirt cover-ups for town. Daytime wear was elegant and strong, such as a double-breasted navy jacket, with pleated ivory pants. Evening wear could be breathtaking - an organdy flame sheath with wheat-stalk and vine-leaf details. Or the flesh-colored tulle blouse with mirror sequins over black flowing pajama pants in "kale" chiffon. There were also great notes of the old Gaultier, like the beaded, ruffled jeans, with a draped cloud-colored bra and knotted turban. Gaultier's clever ideas lit up the show and confirmed him as the top Frenchman in couture, excluding Yves Saint Laurent, who is in his sixties and may retire soon. Once the "bad-boy" iconoclast of fashion, as Saint Laurent was in his way, Gaultier has made it to the top. He's an esteemed partner of Hermes, which owns 35 percent of his business, and is poised to take Saint Laurent's mantle as leader of the French fashion world, if the master retires. At GIVENCHY, Englishman ALEXANDER McQUEEN proved again that he's worthy of the venerable house, after some recent stumbles. At a film studio in a drab Paris suburb, he started his show with a suggestive, little drama - an old white-haired gent, playing the role of a kind of valet, started to clothe a nearly naked girl, adding a gray organza blouse, long scarf, slim hipster pants and a tailored jacket. The result was super and set the tone for the dove gray and light-checked mood of the show. Very subtle, very chic. One couldn't go wrong with the hound's-tooth fitted jacket, the pleated pants, or a chiffon blouse paired with a sleek jumpsuit. Here McQueen's Savile Row background stood out. Yet he added some touches of fantasy, like the metal, flowered bustier sculpture with silk chiffon pants - a nod to Gaultier, who did the sculpted bustier ages ago for Madonna . There were lovely fantasy touches like the white ostrich-feather coat with lean silver trousers and a long, pale, gray scarf. Nostalgia was also woven in with a black-and-white print Edwardian-style evening gown. But the collection was mainly modern - beaded tunics and pants, a gorgeous, clinging, flesh-colored tulle number, see-through except for lace appliques in strategic places. Wearable items won favor. Joan Kaner, Vice President of Nieman-Marcus, declared the collection "divine." The team of Lecoanet-Hemant also turned in a worthy collection, often inspired by the story of Anna and the King of Siam, but mostly by beautiful silks and beads for summer. Among the prettiest items in the collection, which featured light, sandy and cloud tones, were the slim, silk pants, some elegant leather jackets, or multi-strand necklaces as toppers. VALENTINO used his first show of the Millennium to present a retrospective of his 30 year career. The Italian designer is always a popular choice for the ladies who lunch - providing a more wearable end to the market. SHOTLIST: GV PARIS; CU SCREEN; CA AUDIENCE; SOT HILARY SWANK; VAR. SOUNDBITE Kevin Smith: "Ladies and gentlemen it is my pleasure to introduce you to the only man I would ever consider taking a bullet for, my hero, Ben Affleck." SOUNDBITE Ben Affleck: "Thank you Kevin. I thought this was quite a serious political occasion and I so I prepared so remarks that were sort of serious and not about how well hung I am, although that is what I should win an award for to be perfectly honest because this seems a little ridiculous to me. I wasn't a champion of little league, much less a champion of the American way although it sounds good in its own way, it's deliberately vague, they were like 'The Dixie Chicks defended democracy, Skip gave people a lot of money, Affleck, what is he? Well the cameras will show up, but what can we call his award?'" 01:01:22 BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - Show clip of Ben Affleck acceptance speech. SOUNDBITE Ben Affleck: "Anyway it is an honour to attend an event put together by such distinguished and accomplished people and it is an embarrassment to be honoured by such a group. I'm embarrassed because I am being honoured by people who have done so much better and who have done so much more than I have when it comes to contributing to society and improving the lives of others. I only except it in the hopes that the absurd amounts of publicity that I received lately, that as far as I can tell is chiefly because I have a pretty girlfriend, that's what I did, I am a champion of the American way with a pretty girlfriend. bring it on, paparazzi, News at 11. In the hopes that some of that publicity might be pointed at something more significant, something more positive, productive and meaningful. I've always admired people for the American way, they are a group of people, many of who are successful and accomplished and who can chose to continue living a blessed life, but instead have chosen to give their time and money in an effort to protect that basic of our civil rights, freedom." Because you go into hotels, and I work a lot and so I'm in and out of the hotel, you are not really paying attention to everything going on around you. After I did this movie I am like 'oh my God so much work goes into making a hotel run'. So it definitely gave me a better appreciation of it. I would have probably never had played a super hero had they not made a movie version of this particular guy. When they did I felt like I couldn't pass it up. It's a different kind of picture, it's a comic book picture and that means a different thing. Within that genre this is probably the most realistic, grey, sexy version of that movie. That's one of the reasons that I was attracted to it. It's an interesting exercise in whether or not you can straddle the line of these two tones." We started brainstorming and I was like well she should be from one of the outer boroughs because those are the people that come in and travel and work in the city and blah, blah, blah, and it's such a different world.
