57834 RAYBESTOS 1975 AUTO RACING TRIPLE CROWN INDIANAPOLIS 500 SHAFFER 500 ONTARIO 500
This 1975 color film is about the Triple Crown of car racing. It was presented by Raybestos and narrated by Tom Carnegie. It opens with landing a glider, skydiving, a rainy track meet, a hot-air balloon, and a race car. The driver’s face is seen through his helmet. Johnny Rutherford adjusts his steering wheel (:08-1:35). 1975, the race cars are towed into place in Ontario, California. Many famous drivers participate as race highlights are shown. The Foyt, Unser, and Rutherford pit crews spring into action. A.J. Foyt wins (1:36-9:02). At the Indianapolis 500, bands march as the crowds fill the grandstands. Peter DePolo celebrates 50 years after his win there (9:04-9:25). The cars are rolled into position. The Sinmast-sponsored car is shown. Actor James Garner wishes drivers good luck. A large group of balloons are released from the track as the famous “Gentlemen, start your engines” is heard. The pace car beings moving but one car is stalled, causing the rest to drive around it before he gets it started. The green flag is out and the race begins (9:26-11:52). Highlights of the race follow, with A.J. Foyt, Bobby Unser, and Johnny Rutherford battling it out. Mario Andretti’s car, sponsored by Viceroy, is having issues at the pit stop. An accident causes the yellow flag to be used and the leaders take advantage of their pits (11:54-15:00). Tom Sneva survives a fiery crash, shown in slow motion. The drivers are forced to drive through the grass to avoid car parts. Again, the leaders take advantage of filling up on gas (an Ashland tank is shown). Gary Bettenhausen’s blows a right rear hub and expertly keeps the three-wheeled car on the track until he can pull off safely into the grass (15:02-19:50). The storm hits and the crowd scrambles to cover themselves during the downpour. Visibility on the track is reduced to a few hundred yards. They create rooster-tails as they round the curves and some spin-out. The race is called early and Unser is given the checkered flag (19:52-21:59). The cars are in place at the start of the Shaffer 500 at Pocono, delayed due to rain. The pit crews sit under tarps at the cars. The pace car moves and the race begins. The track has different banks at each turn. Highlights of the race are shown. Rutherford’s pit stop is shown. A car lays a smoke screen for driver’s behind it. The Sneva team car has problems. Rain causes the pace car to take the track (22:00-26:54). The green flag is waved. Gordan Johncock hits the wall. The yellow flag remains out due to a fire truck stuck in the center field mud. The crowd covers for a new downpour, which again causes the rain to be called. Foyt is declared the winner and the Triple Crown winner (26:56-29:33). People push their cars out of the mud fields, including a 1975 Plymouth Duster and a 1975 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon (29:34-30:04).

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
