But due to the unusual circumstances, the specialized counter-terrorism unit will lead the investigation, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement Tuesday. \n Skripal was previously convicted in Russia of spying for Britain before being granted refuge in the UK after a high-profile spy swap between the US and Russia in 2010. \n\n\n Salisbury, perhaps best known as the stopping-off point for tourists visiting nearby Stonehenge, has since become the unlikely center of an extensive police probe into the mysterious circumstances around how Skripal and his daughter fell ill.\n The pair were found on a bench in an unremarkable outdoor shopping complex, surrounded by a handful of British chain eateries, including the Italian restaurant Zizzi, which was closed as part of the inquiry. \n They did not have any visible injuries, according to police. \n\n Images taken outside the restaurant on Monday night showed investigators in anti-contamination suits searching the premises. Authorities have declined to name the substance to which the pair were exposed.\n A small number of emergency services personnel were treated immediately after the incident, local police said in a statement Tuesday. One of them remains in the hospital. \n\n Salisbury resident Freya Church described seeing the pair on the bench appearing "out of it."\n "She sort of leant in on him, it looked like she'd passed out maybe. He was doing some strange hand movements, looking up to the sky," Church told Reuters on Monday.\n "I felt like I should step in but to be honest they looked so out of it that I thought that even if I did step in I wasn't sure how I would help. So yeah, I just left them, but it looked like they'd been taking something quite strong."\n\n\n By Tuesday morning, the bench had been covered in a white forensic tent, a light drizzle of rain falling on reporters gathered at the scene.\n The case has drawn comparisons to the poisoning of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, who died a slow death after drinking tea laced with highly radioactive polonium-210 in a Mayfair hotel in 2006.\n A detailed UK inquiry later concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin probably approved the operation by Russian agents to kill Litvinenko. The Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed the UK investigation as politically motivated. \n In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the Skripal case, saying "we do not have any information" about the situation, and adding that he did not know whether Skripal still had Russian citizenship. \n\n\n UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Tuesday the Skripal case had "echoes" of what happened to Litvinenko. \n While he stopped short of "pointing fingers" of responsibility, Johnson said the UK would act robustly if "evidence emerges of state responsibility," during a Parliament session. He then suggested that the UK's participation at the World Cup in Russia could potentially be affected. \n "I think it will be very difficult to imagine that UK representation at that event could go ahead in the normal way, and we will certainly have to consider that," Johnson said. \n A UK Foreign Office spokesperson later clarified those comments, stating that Johnson was referring specifically to the UK's diplomatic representation at the event, rather than the soccer team.\n Speaking on Russian radio, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Johnson's comments "wild."\n\n Who is Sergei Skripal?\n\n Skripal arrived in the UK as part of an elaborately choreographed spy swap conducted by the United States and Russia in which the two countries exchanged agents on chartered planes on the runway at an airport in Vienna, Austria.\n Among the 10 so-called Russian "sleeper agents" deported by the US as part of the deal was Anna Chapman, who had previously lived in London. \n\n\n Skripal was one of four Russians who traveled in the opposite direction, after being pardoned by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.\n According to previous reports by Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti, Skripal was convicted to 13 years imprisonment in 2006 for spying for the UK.\n It quoted Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) as saying Skripal, a former Russian military intelligence colonel, was convicted for "treason in the form of espionage" and that he had been recruited by Britain's MI6 intelligence service.\n The report said he had spied for Britain while serving as an intelligence officer during the 1990s and that he had continued to communicate with MI6 after his retirement in 1999.\n Russian court officials said Skripal had received at least $100,000 for his collaboration with MI6, RIA Novosti reported.\n\n\n According to the FSB, Skripal's "actions caused serious damage to the national defense and security." The intelligence service added that MI6 paid Skripal for the information in foreign currency, which was transferred monthly to his account in a Spanish bank.\n Russian newspaper reports at the time of his conviction said that Skripal had shared information about dozens of his former colleagues operating undercover in Europe, in particular their secret meeting venues, addresses and passwords.\n The FSB said that Skripal had admitted his guilt and gave truthful testimony about his activities, which the court had taken into consideration in sentencing him.\n Skripal is believed to have lived in the UK since his release from Russian custody in 2010. \n Skripal's daughter is believed to be one of the few members of his immediate family still alive, after his wife and son reportedly died in recent years. \n\n\n -----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----\n\n --KEYWORD TAGS--\nRUSSIA SPY ENGLAND SWAP \n\n

U.S. Brigadier General Ira Eaker leads B-17 raid on Rouen, France, during World War 2
U.S. Army Air Force armorers ride atop bombs on trolleys, being pulled by a tug on an airfield in England during World War 2. Airmen gather around a bomb as one writes in chalk, "To Schicky (referring to Hitler family, Schickelgruber) this is only the start, Love, L.E.Z." Views of Airmen rolling bombs on carts under a B-17E aircraft. View from inside a B-17 as ground crews look up through open bomb bay doors. B-17 combat crewmen walking and riding bicycles, to attend a mission briefing. Inside the assembled aircrews are briefed by a British RAF officer, who says, "We're going to work. The target is XZ 462." He goes on providing details to be followed by aircrews. The crews leave the briefing room. Next, B-17s are seen taxiing out for takeoff. The lead aircraft is "Yankee Doodle" piloted by Brigadier General Ira Eaker. Another is "Stinky." Next is "Little Skunk Face."And the last one "Berlin Sleeper." Ground crews watch as the B-17 bombers take off and assemble into formation overhead. Views from inside a B-17 as bombs fall and its gunners fight off German fighter planes. Bombs seen falling and exploding on the ground and raising clouds of smoke. Glimpse of gunners firing at attacking German aircraft. Narrator states there is anti-aircraft fire all around them, that jolts the aircraft. The B-17s assemble in formation for the flight home. Back at the base, some wait atop the tower for the returning aircraft. General Ira Eaker, Chief of the U.S. VIII Bomber Command, steps from a returning aircraft, and greets Major General Carl Spaatz, Commander of the 8th Air Force. Final scene shows Brigadier General Eaker, smoking a cigar and surrounded by civilian and military reporters. ( Note: Reportedly, the B-17 "Stinky" crash landed in Athenry Co Galway Ireland on the 15th January 1943 with General Jacob Devers and a party of other Generals onboard, but none were injured and and all arrived safely at 2AM the same day, in Belleek, Northern Ireland.) Location: England United Kingdom. Date: August 17, 1942.

51144 1948 TRANSPACIFIC FLIGHT FROM SYDNEY AUSTRALIA TO VANCOUVER CANADA
This wonderful film from 1948 shows the "Pacific Skyway" that links Sydney, Australia with Vancouver, Canada, 8,000 miles in 48 hours. In this era only four planes per day made the grueling flight. Featured in the film is a Douglas DC-6 operated by British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines or BCPA. This was an airline registered in New South Wales, Australia in June 1946 with headquarters in Sydney. It was formed by the governments of Australia (50%), New Zealand (30%) and the United Kingdom (20%) to pursue trans-Pacific flights. BCPA was later taken over by Qantas. (Note: the narrator refers to the aircraft shown in the movie as a "Skymaster" which was generally the name used for the C-54, a cargo aircraft related to the DC-6. The plane shown is the BCPA "Discovery", and it's possible it was actually not a DC-6 but a DC-4. BCPA operated DC-4s prior to acquiring DC-6s.)

At 2:29, the plane lands at Fiji for refueling at the Nadi Airport. Fiji is shown including sugar cane cultivation, pineapple plantations, and more. At 3:30 stewardesses are introduced to the royal family. At 4:30 the film mentions a stop at Canton Island, but that stop is not shown. At 4:50, the aircraft arrives at Hawaii, and the Honolulu airport is shown. At 5:20 the stewardesses explore Waikiki Beach and pick up a surfboard to learn to surf. At 5:54, traditional hula dancing is shown. At 5:53, the trip resumes to Vancouver with stewardess service shown over the Pacific. At 7:20 San Francisco is seen from low altitude. San Francisco airport is shown briefly before the trip resumes over the Pacific NW. At 8:13 Vancouver is shown with its modern airport and downtown including at 8:30 streetcars and buses near the Capital Theater and Strand. The Lion's Gate Bridge is shown at 9:00, and modern suburbs as well.

The original BCPA route is shown in the film, from Sydney – Auckland – Fiji – Canton Island – Hawaii – San Francisco – Vancouver and later included Melbourne. Initially, BCPA chartered all flights to Australian National Airways, which used its Douglas DC-4s. The inaugural flight departed from Sydney on 15 September 1946.

In late 1948, BCPA took delivery of the first of four Douglas DC-6 aircraft, outfitted as Pullman-type sleepers, bundling board options with small port holes bedside. Each aircraft was named for one of the four sailing vessels of Captain Cook, Resolution, Discovery, Adventure and Endeavour.

Initially BCPA charted all flights to the Australian National Airways, which used its Douglas DC-4s. The inaugural flight departed from Sydney on the 15th September 1946. In late 1948 BCPA took delivery of the first of four Douglas DC-6 aircraft.

After BCPA Flight 304 crashed near San Francisco on October 29, 1953, BCPA ran into financial difficulties and was liquidated in May 1954. BCPA's remaining three DC-6 aircraft were sold to TEAL (now Air New Zealand) and its trans-Pacific route was taken over by Qantas.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! POLAND: BIDEN ARRIVES IN PRZEMYSL AFTER SECRET TRIP TO UKRAINE

URGENT: Biden is in Poland after secret trip to Ukraine
\n

\n
From Kevin Liptak
\n

\n

\n

\n
President Joe Biden has left Ukraine after a highly symbolic covert visit. He crossed the border into Poland at roughly 8 p.m. local time.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Biden traveled by train in and out of Kyiv, making the 10-hour journey with only a handful of advisers to two journalists.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Biden flew to Poland aboard a C-32 aircraft with a refueling stop in Germany before boarding the train into Ukraine on Sunday.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The train went by night into Ukraine, making only a few stops to collect additional security.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Full report from the traveling press pool –
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n
President Biden has left Ukraine and is back in Poland.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pooler will have more specifics soon, but is sending this report since more details can be shared about the president’s movements leading up to this point.
\n

\n

\n

\n
After his departure from the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, President Biden’s motorcade pulled up to the Kyiv-Pasazhyrsky railway station just before 1 p.m. and departed the Ukrainian capital city just under 10 minutes later by train.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Biden had arrived at the same central Kyiv railway station at 8 a.m. in the morning following a roughly 10-hour overnight ride originating from Przemysl Glówny in Poland.
\n

\n

\n

\n
AP’s Evan Vucci was able to capture some photos of Biden on the train out of Kyiv that will be pooled. Your pooler was not allowed to be present for those photos, which were taken just after we departed from Kyiv.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Now that we’ve addressed the many questions and suspicions around how Biden got in and out of Ukraine, your pooler will start from the beginning and share more details about the movements that had remained under embargo for security reasons and until Biden was safely headed to Warsaw.
\n

\n

\n

\n
‘The president is going to Kyiv’
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pooler and the AP’s Evan Vucci were summoned to a private meeting on Friday in White House communications director Kate Bedingfield's office, with WHCA President Tamara Keith also in attendance. We were informed that President Biden would be traveling to Kyiv and that we would be the only two journalists in the travel pool. Tam has already sent an email out explaining the process.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pool was sworn to secrecy about the trip and told to look out for an email containing instructions for an early Sunday morning departure from Andrews Air Force Base. The subject line would read: “Arrival instructions for the golf tourney.”
\n

\n

\n

\n
That email arrived just after 3 p.m. EST on Saturday and told your pool to report to Andrews between 2 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. EST Sunday.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Departure from Andrews
\n

\n

\n

\n
Pool arrived unilaterally at Andrews and was swept at 2:15 a.m. As mentioned in an earlier report, your pool’s phones were taken by agents and not returned until our arrival at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv more than 24 hours later.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pool was driven to an Air Force C-32 often used to fly into smaller airports during domestic travel. Prior to its surreptitious departure, the plane sat in the dark next to a hanger with the shades drawn and away from the tarmac where it is typically parked for presidential travel.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pool did not see Biden board the plane. We were already on board when an overhead announcement at 3:40 a.m. EST noted the president was en route and roughly 20 minutes out. A subsequent overhead announcement at 4:00 a.m. stated that Biden had arrived.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Air Force One departed from Andrews at 4:15 a.m. EST.
\n

\n

\n

\n
From here on out, please be advised that timestamps are in local time and the time changes one hour from our starting point in Poland to our destination of Kyiv.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Arrival in Ramstein
\n

\n

\n

\n
AF1 touched down at Ramstein Air Base in Germany at 5:13 p.m. local time Sunday under slightly overcast skies to refuel after an approximately seven-hour flight.
\n

\n

\n

\n
During the flight over, Jen O’Malley Dillon, Annie Tomasini and Jake Sullivan each stopped by for a brief hello but did not speak in an official capacity, hold an OTR or share any details of the trip.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The plane remained with its shades down for the duration of its time on the ground, which lasted roughly an hour and 15 minutes. Your pool remained in the back press cabin the entire time and did not see Biden at any point during the flight or stop in Ramstein.
\n

\n

\n

\n
AF1 was wheels up again at 6:29 p.m. after the sun had set and the skies were dark.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Arrival in Rzeszów
\n

\n

\n

\n
AF1 landed at the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport at 7:57 p.m. Sunday.
\n

\n

\n

\n
As you may recall, Biden traveled to Rzeszów last year and met at the airport hanger with U.S. troops who were in Poland at the time, as well as humanitarian workers and his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The airport was clear upon Biden’s arrival Sunday. Your pool did not see Biden deplane or get into his vehicle and was quickly ushered toward an SUV for press. The president’s motorcade began rolling at 8:12 p.m. on a roughly one-hour drive along a fairly empty eastbound highway.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pooler counted at least 20 cars in the motorcade but advises you confirm the number with officials. The motorcade consisted of a mix of minivans, SUVs and suburbans and did not use sirens to avoid drawing attention.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Train from Przemysl Glówny
\n

\n

\n

\n
Biden’s motorcade arrived at the Przemysl Glówny train station at approximately 9:15 p.m.
\n

\n

\n

\n
It was relatively quiet at this time of night with a handful of people milling about outside the station and the stalls seemingly all closed.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The motorcade pulled directly up to a train that was mostly purple two large strips at the bottom from its exterior and large square windows with the shades mostly drawn. A handful of the train cars were blue with a yellow stripe along the middle and were reminiscent of the trains that have brought refugees into Poland from Ukraine.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Biden was dropped directly in front of his train car and your pool once again did not get a glimpse of the president.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Your pool was escorted to its own train car and put in separate sleeper cabins, each of which contained four single bunkbed-style beds. Your pooler was told by a security officer that the train had approx. eight cars, including the engines. Most of the train was occupied by a heavy security presence.
\n

\n

\n

\n
A small group of passengers awaiting a separate train on the opposite side of the tracks were huddled in conversation and occasionally glanced over, but it was unclear if they could make out any of the activity unfolding before them.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The train was rolling from Przemysl Glówny at 9:37 p.m. Your pooler was told by an agent on board that the train crossed the border into Ukraine at roughly 10:00 p.m. but is in the midst of confirming.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Much of the journey occurred in the dark and so there was little visible beyond streetlights and the shadows of buildings in the distance. There was no interaction between your pool and White House staff traveling with the president throughout the 10-hour journey, nor any sightings of Biden on his favorite mode of transport.
\n

\n

\n

\n
There were a handful of stops, at least once to pick up additional security, along the way. It was not always clear what prompted the stops, most of which were brief, and your pool was isolated from the staff on board.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Arrival in Kyiv
\n

\n

\n

\n
As the train carrying President Biden approached Kyiv, the sun had risen and views from the window largely consisted of graffiti walls, barren winter trees and a colorful assortment of brick homes — many of them in pastel colors.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The train came to a stop at the Kyiv-Pasazhyrsky station at roughly 8:00 a.m. local time. The area around the platform had been cleared and U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink awaited Biden and his staff in chilly outdoor conditions.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Jake Sullivan and Jen O’Malley Dillon got off the train and were followed by Biden minutes later at 8:07 a.m. As mentioned earlier, the president’s first words after stepping off the train were: “It’s good to be back in Kyiv.”
\n

\n

\n

\n
The motorcade, which again was a mix of SUVs, minivans and armored vehicles, was rolling from the train station at 8:18 a.m. en route to Mariinsky Palace. Along the way, the motorcade passed Kyiv's Independence Square, or Maidan, the site of major demonstrations in 2013-2014.
\n

\n

\n

\n
You know the rest from Kyiv already. But as a reminder, the president’s stops consisted of:
\n

\n

\n

\n
-Meeting with President Zelensky at Mariinsky Palace
\n

\n
-Walkabout with Zelensky at St. Michael’s Cathedral
\n

\n
-Stop at U.S. Embassy in Kyiv
\n

\n

\n

\n
As mentioned above, Biden departed Kyiv by the same train just before 1:10 p.m.
\n

\n

\n

\n
The ride was long and uneventful. The train crossed the border back into Poland shortly after 8 p.m. local time (note time change from Kyiv).
\n

\n

\n

\n
The train arrived at the Przemysl Glówny at 8:45 p.m. Once again, your pool did not see Biden get off the train or get into his car.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Motorcade was rolling at 9 p.m.
\n

\n

\n

\n
More to come...
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n
--SUPERS--
\n
TVN Poland
\n
Monday
\n
Przemysl, Poland
\n

\n
February 20, 2023
\n

\n
--VIDEO SHOWS--
\n

\n
--LEAD IN--
\n

\n
--VO SCRIPT--
\n

\n
--SOT--
\n

\n
--TAG--
\n

\n
--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
\n

\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n

\n
--MUSIC INFO---
