32610g HD 1942 WWII GERMAN NEWSREEL OPERATION BARBAROSSA INVASION OF RUSSIA CAPTURE OF MINSK
This is one of a series of newsreels produced for the home market in Germany, and sold in department stores before and during WWII. This particular film focuses on German victories in the East, before showcasing the current situation with the Heer (Army) pushing towards Minsk. Starting at :10, the film takes a victory lap, showing conquered and allied nations beginning with Belgium, Denmark (:16), Holland (:19), France (:21) (with peculiar images of documents like passports being checked), Spain -- where Hitler's ally Franco prevailed in the Spanish Civil War (:26) (here a sign is waved indicating Falangists against Russia), Italy with Mussolini at the helm (:34), Romania (:40), Czechoslovakia (:44), Hungary (:46), and Croatia (:49). At (:58), the imagery shifts to show Operation Barbarossa, the assault on Russia. At (1:20) Henschel Hs 123 ground attack aircraft take off on photographic missions. At 1:20, intelligence officers remove aerial photos from a drying rack and study them with a magnifying glass to select targets. At 1:25, armor columns with panzers are seen moving deeper into Russia. At 1:39, an MG 42 machine gun is seen in use. At 1:46 a Soviet tank blows up. At 1:50, German cavalry move to the front. At 1:56, Riga the capital of Latvia is identified on a map. It was occupied by the Germans in July of 1941, a move that some local inhabitants saw as a liberation from Soviet domination (but their excitement was short lived as the Germans committed many atrocities during the occupation). At 2:02, a smashed bridge is shown, the Germans use boats to cross the river. At 2:10, infantry on the march as crowds applaud their arrival. At 2:19, downtown parts of Riga are shown smashed and burned. At 2:23, the drive on Lviv, Ukraine is bogged down by terrible road conditions and mud. At 2:30, a German motorcyclist pushed his bike through the slop. At 2:39, downtown Lviv is shown covered in smoke from fires. At 2:43, an animated map shows the push towards Minsk. Armor is once again shown on the move, as well as a group of infantry on bicycles (2:48). At 3:00, Soviet soldiers throw up their hands in surrender. At 3:05, a civilian presents identity papers. At 3:13, members of the cavalry are seen with their horses; one has a meal from his mess kit. At 3:30, the Soviets attempt a breakout from Minsk, but they are pushed back. At 3:40, some of the 300,000 prisoners are shown marching into captivity. At 3:46, the wreckage of Red Army hopes are seen, destroyed tanks including a 52 tonner, as well as aircraft destroyed on the ground. The film ends with typical images of artillery blasts and the German army moving relentlessly onward.

The Battle of Bialystok–Minsk was conducted by the Wehrmacht's Army Group Centre under Field Marshal Fedor von Bock in the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa, from 22 June to 9 July 1941. During the campaign, the Red Army lost 420,000 men against Wehrmacht casualties of roughly 12,000. In a mere 18 days, the German army advanced 460 kilometers into the Soviet Union.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
