LADYWELL GAME
Lancing College, West Sussex.

L/S of the Lancing College grounds and buildings. M/S of the students wearing shorts as they run towards the camera. One of the boys has ball in his hands. L/S of the boys arriving at the field surrounded with crowd - boys in grey school uniforms. It is obvious that some kind of a game is about to start. Game is called Ladywell Game and it is invention of the head boy David Smith. It is rather interesting mixture of football, rugby, water polo and "other, more unorthodox strategies", which makes it chaotic and difficult to watch - unless one knows the rules.

There is a creek in the field and boys inspect its banks "to check if there is enough mud," claims the voiceover. M/S of a boy making up the goal with posts. Several shot of the audience. C/U shot of the referee blowing a whistle. M/S of the ball being thrown into water and boys jump in. Succession of shots of the game and the audience.

Game looks messy and confusing but there are still rules to it. Boys are kicking, throwing and pushing the ball in various ways, they jump at each other as in the rugby match, they have goals same as in football. One team has scored so they go back to starting position. Each team at different side of the stream, ball in the water and jump in again. Boys are pushing and jumping at each other most of the time.

Referee blows the whistle, the match is finished. Boys are all wet and muddy. The captain of the winning team, at this occasion the inventor of the game David Smith, is presented with a trophy from the headmaster's wife - an old saucepan. Crowd is cheering. M/S of David Smith being held at boy's shoulders waving with the saucepan - very happy moment.
