First footage of a black smoker hydrothermal vent. This footage is from the 1979 discovery of black smokers by the Alvin submersible, some three kilometres below the surface of the ocean, at 21 degrees north on the East Pacific Rise. Black smokers are tall chimneys of rock formed where geothermally-heated water erupts into the sea. On contact with the cold sea water, the dissolved minerals precipitate and form a rocky tube around the jet of water. The presence of heat and chemicals provides the basis for unique and diverse ecosystems far from the reach of sunlight.
