It was the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca during the 13th century, and a significant Catalan influence is evident in its medieval core. South of the old town, the huge Gothic-and-Romanesque Palace of the Kings of Majorca has ramparts with views to the coast.

South Korea's ex-defense chief Kim banned from leaving country amid treason charges
WASHINGTON, US - OCT 31, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - DEC. 3, 2024: South Korean authorities on Thursday banned former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun from leaving the country over his alleged involvement in President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law declaration. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's Public Investigation Division has imposed an overseas travel ban on Kim through the Justice Ministry, according to the Yonhap news agency. The development came after the Labor Party, the Green Party, and the Justice Party filed a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on Wednesday against Yoon, Kim, and Army Chief of Staff Park An-soo, accusing them of committing treason. Earlier, Yoon accepted the resignation of Kim amid growing criticism over his alleged involvement in Yoon's failed martial law declaration. Kim, who reportedly suggested the president to impose martial law, offered his resignation Wednesday. Yoon has nominated Choi Byung-huk, a retired four-star general who is currently serving as South Korea's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, to replace Kim, Yoon's Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk said at a press briefing, according to Yonhap. Choi is regarded as a strong candidate to "fulfill the military's core responsibilities, including maintaining a solid readiness posture based on the strong South Korea-US alliance," Chung said. Meanwhile, Park An-su, who was named the martial law commander, told lawmakers on Thursday he offered his resignation to the former defense minister. "I understand the Department of Defense is reviewing (resignation)," he said, in response to a question during a parliamentary committee meeting.(Footage by Mostafa Bassim /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)

53704 1943 SOUTH AFRICA DOCUMENTARY "KNOW YOUR COMMONWEALTH"
The black-and-white circa 1943 film from the Apartheid era, “Know Your Commonwealth South Africa” compiled material shot for the South African Bureau of Information to take viewers to African nation. It of course is a colonial film at its core, and ignores the racial problems that haunted the nation. Farmers are shown in fields as we’re given a brief history of how the Dutch Trading Company came to South Africa more than 300 years ago, later joined by the British. It is a land of contrast, as a native Bantu is shown on horseback while men and women jump onto buses in bustling cities. African women are shown working in fields at mark 03:00 while African men are shown studying agriculture in college “to become scientific farmers.” The idyllic lifestyle was changed in September 1939 with the start of World War II (mark 04:15), and we see South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts meeting with his cabinet to discuss a declaration of war against the Axis powers. There are scenes of South African troops in formation and at sea (mark 05:04). With help from Britain’s Royal Air Force, South Africa was able to train pilots (mark 05:38) while native Africans are taught how to drive to assist in the war effort. We learn how Dutch and British South Africans fought side by side “to drive the Facists out of Abyssinia” and at mark 08:30 see South African Major General Dan Pienaar present a commendation to s soldier his service in the South African campaign. (Pienaar was killed in a 1942 air crash). The film tells of advancements in industry and how blacks and whites, men and women, have all learned to work together. As the war continues, so does work in fields (mark 10:30) as workers are shown going about their daily routines to supply produce to families and servicemen. The narrator echoes the words of General Smuts at mark 13:15 noting that a debt is owed to the principles which helped South African gain its own freedom.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! Foreign policy expert says Xi Jinping placed South China Sea as core component of "great rejuvenation of Chinese nation" at congressional briefing
Center for Strategic and International Studies Senior Fellow Gregory Poling discusses how Xi Jinping's first speech on the China dream in 2013 highlighted China's rise as a maritime power and the importance of recovering lost Maritime territories as a core component, placing the South China Sea as central to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation and his political mission, meaning major compromises were unlikely under his leadership while China primarily pursued its claims with increasing coercion and intentional creation of risk below the level of kinetic force at a US-China Economic and Security Review Commission briefing on United States and Chinese relations with Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
