Exoplanet orbits a star. Animation showing the planet known as 55 Cancri orbiting its sun-like star. This planet is about twice the size of Earth and revolves around its star in less than 18 hours. The planet is too close to its star to be seen separately in the sky, but observations with NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope showed how much the total light from the system dropped as the planet slipped behind the star in what is called an occultation. The data are shown on a graph that appears in front of the star system. Astronomers can then calculate how much light is coming directly from the planet itself. The surface of 33 Cancri reaches around 1760 degrees Celsius, but does not reflect much visible light.

The Democratic candidate was up early this morning to cast his vote and get started on this last day of campaigning. Spitzer's day will stretch long into the night, when he awaits results at an election party at the Waldorf-Astoria after the polls close.

This galaxy is typical of grand spiral galaxies, with dark dust lanes, youthful star clusters and star-forming regions in spiral arms around a bright nucleus (centre). This composite image highlights two anomalous arms in radio (purple) and X-ray (blue) data, which seem to arise in the central region and are evidence of energetic jets of material blasting into the galaxy's disk. The jets are likely powered by matter falling into a supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. Orion nebula. Coloured composite infrared and visible light image of the Orion nebula M42. This emission nebula, a cloud of gas and dust in which starbirth takes place, is found in the constellation Orion, some 1500 light years from Earth. Glowing clouds of ionised hydrogen and sulphur gases are green, and cool clouds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are orange and red. The gases are ionised by radiation from the four young Trapezium stars at the core (centre left). The small orange dots are embryonic stars, growing as they accumulate dust and gas.
