HIV INFECTED BABY (8/23/1994)
Officials think they've found a case in which one baby transmitted the AIDS virus to another infant through contaminated hospital equipment. The baby boy under investigation was born about three years ago. He received hospital treatment for an eye infection when he was eleven days old. At the age of eight months he tested positive for the H-I-V virus. The baby's family doesn't have the AIDS virus. So investigators from the New York City Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta focused on the hospital. The report on the case does not identify the hospital or its location. It suggests health workers were lax about infection control policies, such as ensuring medical supplies are sterilized. The findings were published in the medical journal ``The Lancet.''
