USA LUGE LOOKING FOR NEW RECRUITS (2019)
The White Castle USA Luge Slider Search is an annual grassroots recruitment program hosted by USA Luge team members and Olympians. They are traveling to about a dozen cities throughout the country this summer, introducing kids to a sport they might not otherwise get to try. "There's only two tracks in the country: one in Lake Placid, New York and one in Park City, Utah," said Aidan Kelly, head of development for USA Luge. "So outside of living in those areas, it's pretty challenging to get on a luge sled or even find out what the sport is about.". The free clinics are for boys and girls age nine to 13. They receive a crash course in luging, then zip down a makeshift course along West River Parkway in Minneapolis using actual luge sleds outfitted with rollerskate wheels. "This is mostly just for fun but it would be cool to see if it went somewhere," said 12 year old Seth Damsgard from Maple Grove, who spent Saturday morning luging for the first time. Coordinators told 5 EYEWITNESS News they have recruited several kids from Minnesota in the past, including 14 year old Ashlyn Baker of Victoria, who is now on the USA Luge Junior Development Team. "I came to the clinic in 2017 and didn't really have any expectations," said Baker, while volunteering at Saturday's clinics. "But then I was like, wow this is such a cool sport! I really love it. And a few weeks later, we got an invitation to come down to Lake Placid, New York to train for a week. My long-term goal is to be in the Olympics." Those who show promise in this year's summer program are invited to Lake Placid, NY; Park City, UT; or Muskegon, MI, to try luge on ice at a USA Luge sanctioned training site. The top young athletes from that group will then be selected for next year's development team.

There were so many emotional moments there and so many important things that were addressed during the opening ceremonies and I think they touched on everything perfectly. I enjoyed it, I know all of the athletes were incredibly excited to be walking in the opening ceremonies. Mountains near Salt Lake City STORYLINE: The first full day of competition in the 2002 Winter Olympic games got underway on Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah. In all, more than 2,500 athletes from 77 countries are participating in the games, expected to draw up to 80,000 spectators a day. The sporting program is the largest ever for a Winter Olympics, with 78 events in 15 disciplines and seven sports. Crowds of Olympics-goers gathered in downtown Salt Lake, to take advantage of the festival atmosphere of the city's Olympic Square. It's a place where event ticket holders and just plain visitors to Salt Lake can get a bit of the Olympic experience. In one pavilion, visitors get a feel for what it's like when the real Olympic athletes race down the luge course. Or they can try their hand at the bobsleigh, or maybe take a shot at a hockey puck. Salt Lake's Olympic committee chairman was pleased with the way the games were proceeding. At a press briefing on Saturday, Mitt Romney said access to and from the Olympic venues was going well. Also on Saturday, America's figure skaters talked to reporters about Friday night's opening ceremonies. Figure skater Mike Weiss said it was an honour to participate in the opening ceremony, and to have U-S President George Bush sitting in with the athletes. Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, also took part in the opening ceremony. Cousteau said he hoped his participation in the ceremony would raise environmental awareness around the world.

WORLD DOWNHILL SKATEBOARD AND STREET LUGE 2009
This year's Go Fast Speed Days event proved a real winner with more than 220 riders from all over the world heading for Beachy Head in Eastbourne, East Sussex, South East England to take part in the fifth (5th) leg of the World Downhill Skateboarding and Street luge Championships. Thousands of people flocked to the Sussex spot to enjoy the summer weather and to watch the adrenaline rider’s race down the track at break neck speed. It has been the best-attended and most successful leg for this new growing sport. Racers reached dizzy speeds of up to 60mph as they thundered down the 1.5km course on skateboarders, street luge boards, Classic luge and gravity bikes. Streetluge is a relatively new sport, which is a kind off road-going version of the traditional ice luge. Streetluge are non-motorised and rely on the good old force of gravity. On big roads streetluges can reach speeds in excess of 80 mph and since they don't have any form of suspension and are only a fraction of an inch off the ground they provide the rider with a tremendous sensation of speed The road, which was closed during the whole event, had been re-surfaced last year by Eastbourne Borough Council at a cost of over 38 thousand pounds (£38,000). Those with a serious need for speed were delighted with their new road, but despite the smooth surface, many riders still ended up crashing into the straw bails much to the delight of the crowd of the large crowd. Flinging themselves off a steep ramp at the top of the course the all racers competed against the clock and then against each other for prestigious championship points in their respective classes. The World cup series is an eight-leg tour and travels all over the world just like Formula One. The course at Beachy Head is the culmination of a vision to bring an adrenaline sport to the area whilst ensuring there is very little impact on the environment. Although an adrenalin sport, downhill and street luge is essentially a gravity sport so there are no carbon emissions and little noise generated by the competitors. This is the 3rd year that the event, entitled Eastbourne Speed Days, has been held in Sussex and organisers are keen to keep it as a permanent fixture. In the finals of the two major competitions of the weekend 26 year old Canadian Mischo Erban won the downhill skateboard Championship while English Stock broker 35-year old Peter Eliot took top honours in the Street luge.

Various of people in front of house STORYLINE: Georgians were are paying their last respects to a young luger whose death cast a pall over the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics and sent his nation into mourning. Twenty-one-year old Nodar Kumaritashvili is to be buried Saturday in the cemetery of a tiny church in the snowy village of Bakuriani. Kumaritashvili died last week after slamming into a steel pole on the luge course hours before the opening of the games. An investigation found that he was late in coming out of the next-to-last turn and failed to compensate. Friends and family gathered for a traditional funeral feast on Saturday. They once again rejected the results of the investigation, blaming the design of the course for his death.
