Chernobyl nuclear power station reactor, 1984
Television screen showing the floor squares sitting over the fuel channels of one of Chernobyl nuclear power station's reactors. Four RBMK reactors were completed at Chernobyl between 1978 and 1984. RBMK reactor cores use graphite to promote the nuclear chain reaction and use water for cooling the vertical fuel channels. On 26th April 1986 the nuclear reaction in reactor number 4 went out of control, leading to meltdown and an explosion. Radioactive fall-out contaminated the surrounding areas, with lighter elements carried large distances across Europe. The reactor was completely destroyed, but the three other reactors continued operating, shutting down in 1991, 1996 and 2000. Filmed in 1984.
