Made in 1961, "Mein Kampf" was one of the first documentary films to chronicle the life of Adolf Hitler and his rise to power. <p><p>Opening titles and disclaimer (:09-1:52). Battle for Berlin, Germany 1945 (1:52-2:42). The fllm flashes back to Berlin in 1914. World War I trenches. Tanks on the move, planes fly, submarines at sea. A battleship sinks, men jump into the water as it capsizes. Bombed out ruins. In 1918, Lenin makes peace with Germany as the Bolsheviks rise to power. Weimar Republic is formed in post-war German. The socialist Karl Liebknecht is popular, and ends up murdered (2:43-6:03). Peace treaty signed at Versailles, Germany has to pay war reparations but otherwise remains intact. The new National Socialist Party is formed, with Adolf Hitler as member #7. A baby picture of Hitler, born April 20, 1889. Room where Hitler lived. Anti-Semitic pamphlet with discussion of theory of eugenics. Early swastika design. Picture of Hitler in a crowd when a declaration of war for WWI is issued. Hitler had no family, no job. He decided to be a politician (6:04-11:47). April 1, 1920, Hitler leaves the army to devote himself to being a leader. Men march with the swastika flag. Captain Hermann Göring joins the party. The Beer Hall Putsch ends with Hitler being arrested. He is imprisoned for 264 days in Landsberg Prison. While in prison, he dictated his memoir "Mein Kampf" to Rudolf Hess. His life's mission is to reunite Austria and Germany. When he leaves prison, Hitler speaks of Germany's future. In 1926 the Brown Shirts and Hitler begin their rise to power. Supporters and 'Heil Hitler' salute. Joseph Paul Goebbels, Reich Minister of Propaganda was one of Hitler's closest allies. Unrest in Germany due to hyper inflation, unemployment and other economic woes (11:48-17:25). The Communists still have the most party members but Hitler has appeal. He appeals to the disenchanted and unemployed. He is caricatured and dismissed. Cartoons of Hitler (17:26-19:55). Hitler is shown shaking hands as he runs for president of the Reich. In 1932, the Austrian born Hitler becomes a German citizen. Paul von Hindenburg is re-elected President of Germany and Hitler loses momentum. Hindenburg walks around Hitler becomes Chancellor. Crowds cheer and heil Hitler (19:56-23:38). Hitler schemes with higher ups in the German government. A torchlight procession of Nazis. Hitler looks out of a window and is cheered. Hitler attends a funeral for a fallen policeman and SA officer. People salute Hitler on the steps. A band plays in a procession for the fallen man. Uniformed brownshirts with Swastika flags (23:09-26:00). Hitler's first speech as Chancellor in Berlin in 1933. He is applauded (26:01-29:41). The SA or the Storm Troopers or Brown shirts as they were known, terrorize people and it's legal. On February 27, 1933, the Reichstag, home of the German parliament, is burned down in an act of arson. Soldiers march. The new Reichstag is at the Kroll Opera house. A vote takes place to essentially make Hitler a dictator. Hitler speaks at the event (29:42-34:05). Signs for Hitler. Soldiers salute new German regime. Göring speaks in Prussia and praises Hitler. People raise the swastika flag. Goebbels the Ministry of Propaganda oversees a book burning event. People throw books at the fire (34:06-36:29). April 1, 1933, a boycott of Jewish businessmen is started. Jewish people start to leave the country. Hitler listens to his constituents. People applaud. Whoever stands in Hitler's way is prevented from voicing opposition. SS troops march. SA Chief Viktor Lutze praises HItler (36:30-38:48). Hitler speaks to his comrade at Nuremberg. August 2, 1934, President Hindenburg dies.
