The group sang a host of favourites in the lobby of the Imperial Hotel, including Jingle Bells and Silent Night. The Santas travelled to Japan as part of the Santa Goodwill Tour, which aims to spread goodwill cheer - and small presents - in schools, orphanages and shopping centres. Christians are something of a minority in Japan, whose main religions are Shinto and Buddhism, but the seasonal message of goodwill is open to all. The first tour took place 20 years ago, when a group of volunteers from all over America came to Japan to sing carols at a department store in Tokyo. This year, 150 Santas will tour six Japanese cities, including Sapporo in the north and Okinawa in the south. The volunteers all paid for their trip but instead of taking in the sights, like other tourists, many simply travelled to Japan to bring cheer and goodwill. All participants were given a free Santa suit by the tour operators to make their volunteering more colourful. Japan is not the only destination for the Santa Goodwill Tour. Destiny's Child, 98 Degrees, Macy Gray, Eve, Betsey Johnson and Stephen Baldwin were among the stars who turned out for the launch at the Roseland Ballroom in New York yesterday (5 JUNE 01). The event was hosted by Jenny McCarthy, who has spearheaded the campaign with Destiny's Child. McCarthy also appears in the hard-hitting television campaign. The advertisement sees McCarthy interrupting a couple in a tryst and showing them the consequences of being irresponsible - a newborn baby. Also appearing at the event were a few unlikely characters, including Brandy Broderick, who is better known as Playboy's Playmate of the Year. The Candie's Foundation was established this year to raise awareness about the growing problem of teenage pregnancy in the United States by using celebrities to spread a message of self-respect, responsibility and education. With a full house of guests paying between $300 and $1000 for a ticket the foundation had a successful evening raising funds for its TV and internet awareness campaign. HERE THEY ARE FACED WITH SHORTAGES IN FOOD, CLOTHING AND HOUSING, BUT THESE SOON DISAPPEAR AS INDUSTRY RECONVERTS TO PEACETIME PRODUCTS. MANY VETERANS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GI BILL OF RIGHTS AND RETURN TO SCHOOL.
