United States Army Air Forces conduct an airlift that enables Berlin to survive in spite of a of Soviet blockade in post World War II Germany
Film begins showing ruins of the Bundestag in Berlin, in June, 1948. A tram rides along a street headed toward a tunnel through a destroyed building. Berliners walk about and eat at outdoor tables, enjoying the pleasant weather. On June 26, 1948, the Soviets established a blockade of West Berlin. View of Soviet soldiers in a line at a square in the city. A manufacturing business is seen being adversely affected by the blockade through denial of coal to generate electricity for it. The employees cover the company's equipment and close the business. People jam a corner store fearing a food shortage. Crowds mingle outside the main buildings of the Templehof airdrome. Some men hold a German newspaper announcing Allied intent to supply West Berlin by air. View of an American Army Air Forces C-47 transport plane landing at Templehof. A number of C-47s lined in a circle at the airport field as large trucks offload their cargoes. C-47 taxiing into position. German men climb aboard an open bus to start work at jobs unloading supplies from the aircraft. Views of the men busy with their labors. Glimpse of a "follow me" jeep leading a just landed aircraft to its parking place at night. Images of the workers dimly seen in the semi dark. View of the circular Templehof buildings. A truckload of German workers being carried to their work places. American pilots entering Base operations at Temlehof. Pilots inside Base operations, taking a break while their C-47 is being unloaded. They head out to their airplane to fly back to Frankfurt, Germany for another load of cargo. The climb aboard through the plane's side door. View of C-47 flying with clouds in the background along the Berlin Corridor. Ambulance seen responding to an Airlift aircraft crash. View of aircraft wreckage in a city. It is up side down with landing gear pointing skyward. The wreckage being carted away on a flat bed truck. German citizens gathered in front of a memorial plaque they had put in place. An Army Air Forces Lieutenant and another C-47 pilot look up as the board their plane to watch a four engine C54 transport plane coming in to land. Several views of C-54 transport aircraft in flight overhead. Airlift pilots are seen in a briefing room. Animated map shows Berlin as an "island" in the Soviet zone of occupation, accessible only by three 20mile wide air corridors. Several air bases in the Western zones are shown. Map shows Berlin's three airfields, Templehof, Tegel, and Gatow in the Western sectors, surrounded by a ring of Soviet fields. A line of American C-47s is shown on the map, flying from Wiesbaden airdrome, along a corridor to Berlin, from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM. At 12:00 Noon the C-54s began flying from Rhein Main air base. At 3:00 PM the C-54s stopped and the C-47s began again. Illustration shows how the aircraft were separated by three minute intervals and a thousand feet in altitude. Closeup of a C-54 pilot in his cockpit as he starts his engines. The plane has "The Air Transport Command" written on its side. Inside the C-54 the flight engineer is seen at his panel performing engine start at the direction of the Aircraft Commander Pilot. View of the pilot in the cockpit and his instrument panel. The aircraft taking off. Views of cargo handling on the ground. Trucks carrying the cargoes to places they are needed in the city. Bread being baked for Berliners. Coal being unloaded from rail cars after being flown into the city, A crane operates in a Western sector coal yard. Smoke rising from some of the restarted factories. German employees punch a time clock. Doctors examine school age children. View of street cars operating on power generated by burning coal. Commercial vehicles operating on airlifted gasoline. Darkness due to power saving at night. But people arriving in the city by subway in the morning. Glimpse of C-54 overhead. Food being prepared and sold in shops. People patronizing a news stand. The damaged Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, with C-54 in flight in far distant background. German workers sweeping the airfield ramp. An officer from Base operations arrives in a jeep to debrief a C-54 crew as a truckload of German workers pulls up to begin unloading their cargo. Crew members get food from a mobile snack bar the meets their airplane. A German worker who knew a pilot gives him a gift of a wind up musical Steiff bear for his child. The two pilots begin dancing to the toy bear's tune. The pilot places the toy bear next to the window in his cockpit. Back home, near Frankfurt, the pilot greets his wife, baby and school age daughter, whom he gives the toy bear. The next day, the pilot walks to the rear of his aircraft while en route to Berlin. He throws little parachutes of candy out a window for the children of Berlin below. Views of the parachutes descending and children rushing to retrieve and unwrap them. Location: Berlin Germany. Date: 1949.

THE REPORTER SOUND FROM THE SEGMENT IS NOT AVAILABLE. To discover how the "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) festival is celebrated in Mexico, the ‘Fantastic Festivals of the World’ team traveled to the heart of the beautiful and lush Michoacan State. By the shores of Patzcuaro Lake, small indigenous villages, descendants of the Purepecha tribe, celebrate this festival in a most unusual way. Here they call it the "Night of the Dead". Pagan rituals from Pre Hispanic times are blended with the Colonial Catholic traditions by the local people to create a colorful and uplifting way of honoring their adored dead. Michoacan is known for its skilled artisans. Stone carvers, devilish mask makers and the ancient craft of creating figures from corn cane are the area’s specialty. the city of Morelia and two sisters specialize in local cuisine such as Tarascan soup and pot coffee made with chocolate.

Japan Santa - US santas on goodwill mission
NAME: JAP SANTA 20051201I TAPE: EF05/1063 IN_TIME: 10:14:54:24 DURATION: 00:01:55:04 SOURCES: AP TELEVISION DATELINE: Tokyo - 1 Dec 2005 RESTRICTIONS: SHOTLIST 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Japanese man with grandson (no name given): "I was very much surprised to see many many Santa Clauses. Did you enjoy?" 12. Wide pan shot of Santas giving candies to people in hotel lobby STORYLINE It was a jolly sight in Tokyo on Thursday as 75 Santas from the US sang carols at one of the most prestigious hotels in the Japanese capital. The group sang a host of favourites in the lobby of the Imperial Hotel, including Jingle Bells and Silent Night. The Santas travelled to Japan as part of the Santa Goodwill Tour, which aims to spread goodwill cheer - and small presents - in schools, orphanages and shopping centres. Christians are something of a minority in Japan, whose main religions are Shinto and Buddhism, but the seasonal message of goodwill is open to all. The first tour took place 20 years ago, when a group of volunteers from all over America came to Japan to sing carols at a department store in Tokyo. This year, 150 Santas will tour six Japanese cities, including Sapporo in the north and Okinawa in the south. The volunteers all paid for their trip but instead of taking in the sights, like other tourists, many simply travelled to Japan to bring cheer and goodwill. All participants were given a free Santa suit by the tour operators to make their volunteering more colourful. Japan is not the only destination for the Santa Goodwill Tour. Volunteers have been travelling all over the world, including China, Europe and Africa. KEYWORD - WACKY

Entertainment Daily: Candies Foundation - A star-studded event to promote teenage pregnancy awareness
TAPE: EF01/0450 IN_TIME: 13:30:15 DURATION: 5:42 SOURCES: APTN/Candie's Foundation RESTRICTIONS: Candie's Foundation = No re-use/re-sale without clearance DATELINE: 5th June 2001, New York, USA SHOTLIST: 1. Candie's Foundation advertisement "Be Smart..." 2. Exterior, Roseland Ballroom 3. Interior, pull to Brandy Roderick 4. SOT Brandy Roderick, Playboy Playmate of the Year - "People might see the irony in it but Playboy is a sexy beautiful magazine but it's not a... it doesn't promote young sex, it's not a sexual, your sex type magazine. That's why I am here today to be a young role model for teenagers and even those who do have parents that are talking about it maybe don't want to listen to their parents because they think that maybe they are not cool or something so maybe it will take these people out here to reach them." 5. C/A, media 6. SOT: Stephen Baldwin, Actor - "I think it's an important message to get out to the younger kids that ... they better know what a serious responsibility it is when they are having a bit of fun and having sex. You know if they make babies it's going to change their lives forever." 7. CA signage 8. SOT Betsey Johnson and daughter Lulu Johnson - Sot Lulu - "What was the first thing that you told me about sex?" Sot Betsey Johnson - "I didn't, she knew it all way before I did. She really did, she wrote the book." 9. SOT Kandace Krueger, Miss USA 2001 - "I think we all have those pressures as teens I think it's part of growing up and part of being human. I was very lucky that I had a very open relationship with my parents and my mum especially and I had an older sister too so that was very helpful." 10. Tilt up Jenny McCarthy 11. SOT Jenny McCarthy with husband John Asher, Director/Actor - SOT Jenny McCarthy - "The message tonight from the Candie's Foundation is new and improved. We are telling kids that you can still have fun except when they are about to get in to the heat of passion we want them to stop and make a choice, either say `no I'm not ready' or find a way to protect yourself and it can really make a difference on the rest of their lives." SOT Question - "How about the two of you, any children on the horizon?" SOT Jenny McCarthy - "We talk about that every day but we are trying to work it out with schedules and work and we will get there maybe soon." 12. WS of auditorium 13. VS Jenny McCarthy on stage SOT Jenny McCarthy - "Welcome to Candie's Rock, my name is Jenny McCarthy and I'll be your hostess twinky for this evening I hope you are all buckled in because tonight's show is going to blow your frigging mind but also touch your heart. There are an amazing line up of stars who have all come here tonight for one reason, to meet me and also lend a hand as well as their talents to help raise awareness about teen pregnancy." 14. Performance 98 Degrees ("The Way You Want Me To") 15. Set up 98 Degrees 16. SOT Jeff Timmons, 98 Degrees - "Well yeah I am a father and it's a great responsibility, I don't think I could of handled it when I was a teenager that would have been too much for me to understand. When I was young I was still learning about life and about myself and I don't think I could have handled it like I am now. So it's a very important decision, really think about what you are doing, be responsible. The things that you do as a teen can affect you for the rest of your life." 17. Macy Gray performance ("I Try") 18. Set up, Macy Gray 19. SOT Question - "Tell me a little bit about how you got dressed tonight, what your idea of style is." SOT Macy Gray - "I've got people around with good taste that go shopping for me, I pretty much stay in the hotel and nurse a slight hangover and watch TV all day." 20. Set-up, pull out Destiny's Child 21. SOT Destiny's Child - SOT Beyonce - "We wanted to tell people that you can still be sexy and still be classy, it's all within you. And you can tell guys no if you don't want, there is nothing wrong with it." SOT Kelly - "Just remember that your body is your temple, it's all about you." 22. Performance Destiny's Child ("Survivor") 23. Candie's Foundation ident CANDIE'S PULL IN THE STARS The Candie's Foundation yesterday held its star-studded charity event to help raise funds for a promotional campaign to reduce teenage pregnancies in North America. Destiny's Child, 98 Degrees, Macy Gray, Eve, Betsey Johnson and Stephen Baldwin were among the stars who turned out for the launch at the Roseland Ballroom in New York yesterday (5 JUNE 01). The event was hosted by Jenny McCarthy, who has spearheaded the campaign with Destiny's Child. McCarthy also appears in the hard-hitting television campaign. The advertisement sees McCarthy interrupting a couple in a tryst and showing them the consequences of being irresponsible - a newborn baby. Also appearing at the event were a few unlikely characters, including Brandy Broderick, who is better known as Playboy's Playmate of the Year. The Candie's Foundation was established this year to raise awareness about the growing problem of teenage pregnancy in the United States by using celebrities to spread a message of self-respect, responsibility and education. With a full house of guests paying between $300 and $1000 for a ticket the foundation had a successful evening raising funds for its TV and internet awareness campaign. MANY VETERANS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GI BILL OF RIGHTS AND RETURN TO SCHOOL. THE FILM SHOWS OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EARLY POST WAR YEARS SUCH AS THE LONG SKIRTS OF THE NEW LOOK IN WOMEN'S FASHIONS, THE SCANTY BIKINI BATHING SUITS, AND THE PASSING OF SUCH PROMINENT FIGURES AS ORVILLE WRIGHT, BABE RUTH AND FIORELLO LAGUARDIA. THE LAST SCENE SHOWS JACKIE ROBINSON, THE FIRST NEGRO TO PLAY ON A BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM DUE TO A MOVE MADE BY BRANCH RICKEY OF THE BROOKLYN DODGERS. WINSTON CHURCHILL IS SHOWN ON HIS WAY TO FULTON, MISSOURI, WHERE THE CAMERA RECORDS HIM MAKING HIS FAMOUS IRON CURTAIN SPEECH, WARNING AMERICANS THAT EUROPE IS AGAIN IN PERIL. BOTH CONVENTIONS, THE FAMOUS WHISTLE STOP CAMPAIGN AND THE ACTIVITIES AT DEMOCRATIC & REPUBLICAN HEADQUARTERS ON ELECTION NIGHT ARE SEEN. MORE & MORE, THE ATTENTION OF AMERICA IS TURNED OUTWARD ONCE AGAIN. IN 1949 THE RUSSIANS EXPLODE THEIR FIRST ATOMIC BOMB.
