Preacher JERRY FALWELL claims that Teletubby TINKY WINKY is gay and a corrupting influence on children. In a stinging attack Falwell highlights what he sees as the subtle homosexual traits in Tinky's make-up - signs that would perhaps be lost on his young fans. Falwell says Tinky's colour purple is the colour of the gay pride movement and that his antenna is shaped like a triangle, the symbol for gay pride. And, most damning of all, Tinky is seen everywhere with a handbag. Falwell contends that no red-blooded, heterosexual Teletubby would been seen carry a handbag. "I believe these subtle depictions are intentional and are damaging to the moral lives of our children," says Falwell. In an article, published in the latest issue of his monthly magazine, The National Liberty Journal, Falwell calls on parents to boycott Tinky and his Teletubby pals DIPSY, LAA-LAA and PO. The series, which originated in Britain at the BBC, has been successfully launched in the States were the Teletubbies have a massive pre-school following. STEVE RICE, head of the Itsy Bitsy Entertainment Co. which sells the show in the US says, "Falwell, as usual, is talking out of the back of his dog collar." He says that to 'out' Tinky is "sad, absurd and kind of offensive." And he adds that Tinky's handbag is not a handbag, but a 'magic purse'. Falwell is no stranger to controversy. He called for a boycott of TV sitcom ELLEN after star ELLEN DEGENERES revealed she was gay. If you have small children, you've no doubt seen a few episodes of "Sesame Street" "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" and " Barney". But have you seen the latest in kids television... a show called "Teletubbies". It's a British kiddie show directed at the 0 - 2 year old crowd. The shows characters speak in baby talk. That has caused concern among parents and educators. Child psychologists say kids who watch the Teletubbies could have delayed language development.Nikki Boyer has the story.(Take Pkg)
