Zoom in to motorcycle tyres and shiny chrome hub cap STORYLINE Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts descended upon Cuba's renowned Varadero Beach on Saturday for the second national event in the Communist country involving classic American motorcycles. Dubbed the "Second National Concentration of Harley Davidson Motors of Cuba", the two-day festival attracts crowds from all corners of the island to Varadero's central district in order to see the classic Harley Davidson bikes at first-hand. Here camaraderie prevails and helps keep the bikes running as there are no stores to buy parts in Cuba for these classic motorcycles. Events of this sort are new to Cuba where most large outdoor gatherings are reserved for political rallies and cultural events more to the liking of the aging Communist leadership. On Saturday, however, this tourist beach resort took on a new role in what many are saying is a different and changing Cuba when leather and jean vested bikers arrived to town by the dozens. "There was a time when we were all dispersed, but thanks to the event's organisers we are now beginning to get together again," said Adriana Dominguez, an attorney and proud Harley owner from Havana. "There's a new movement of Harlistas, (referring to a nickname for Harley enthusiasts), reorganising themselves now in Cuba after being forgotten for some time," she said. During Saturday's biker festival, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, mostly from the 1940s and 50s, roared on the streets of this generally quiet resort town. It's hard to imagine that a symbol so associated with "American Freedom" like a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, can take on socialist ideology and be cheered by thousands of what should be Communist youth. Some of the bikes carry revolutionary hero Che Guevara's images and some of the riders ware branded with Che tattoos. According to national vehicles registrations in Cuba, there are approximately 200 vintage Harley-Davidsons on the island. Harley-Davidsons began arriving on the island in the 1920s and by the 40s were the official motorcycle of the Cuban police and army. It wasn't until Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, and the United States imposed an economic embargo on the island shortly afterwards, that the motorbikes were seen as symbols of American imperialism and no longer well-liked by government authorities. The US embargo prohibited further sales of Harleys to Cuba, helping forever lock the existing stock of bikes on the island in a time warp. The newest models seen on the streets of Cuba are from the late 1950s. Some date back as far as the 1920s. The US has maintained the 50-year trade embargo on Cuba, and has demanded political and economic openings before it lifts the sanctions. Cuban leaders say the embargo is cruel, and that America has no business telling them what kind of government they should have. Tight shot of Jena High School sign 22. People taking pictures at high school, pan to schoolyard 23. People taking pictures 24. People marching along street STORYLINE: Thousands of chanting demonstrators filled the streets of Jena, a Louisiana town in America's Deep South, on Thursday in support of six black teenagers initially charged with attempted murder in the beating of a white classmate. The crowd broke into chants of "Free the Jena Six" as civil rights leader Reverend Al Sharpton arrived at the local courthouse with family members of the jailed teens. The plight of the so-called Jena Six has become a flashpoint for one the biggest civil-rights demonstrations in years. Scores of college students bussed in from across the nation, saying they wanted to make a stand for racial equality just as their parents did in the 1950s and '60s. But the teens' case galvanised demonstrators as few legal cases in recent years. "Justice is justice, and it should be fair," said one woman marching in the crowd. "It should have no colour to it." The cause of Thursday's demonstrations dates to August 2006, when a black Jena High School student asked at a student assembly whether blacks could sit under a shade tree that was a frequent gathering place for whites. He was told yes. But nooses appeared in the tree the next day. For some, a hangman's noose tied in an oak tree evokes the image of lynchings in the old South. Three white students were suspended but not criminally prosecuted. LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters said this week he could find no state law covering the act. The noose incident was followed by fights between blacks and whites, culminating in December's attack on white student Justin Barker, who was knocked unconscious. According to court testimony, his face was swollen and bloodied, but he was able to attend a school function that same night. Six black teens were arrested. Five were originally charged with attempted second-degree murder, charges that have since been reduced for four of them. The sixth was booked as a juvenile on sealed charges. People began massing for the demonstrations before dawn on Thursday, jamming the two-lane highway leading into town and parking wherever they could. By midmorning, state police estimated the crowd at 12-thousand and growing. Organisers said it eventually swelled to as many as 50-thousand. Demonstrators gathered at the local courthouse, a park, and the yard at Jena High where the tree once stood (it was cut down in July). At times the town resembled a giant festival, with people setting up tables of food and drink and some dancing while a man beat on a drum. Sharpton admonished the crowd to remain peaceful, and there were no reports of trouble. "It's a huge day, and it's the beginning of a real movement against criminal justice," said Sharpton. State police could be seen chatting amicably with demonstrators at the courthouse. US President George W. Bush said he understood the emotions and the FBI was monitoring the situation. "The events in Louisiana have saddened me," the president told reporters at the White House. "All of us in America want there to be, you know, fairness when it comes to justice." While Jena Six supporters were overwhelmingly black, young whites were also present. Many white residents of Jena also expressed anger at the way news organisations portrayed this town of 3-thousand people. "Any time you get people from outside, putting their slant on it, it's going to get blown out of proportion," said one Jena resident. Mychal Bell, now 17, is the only one of the defendants to be tried. He was convicted of aggravated second-degree battery, but his conviction was tossed out last week by a state appeals court that said Bell, who was 16 at the time of the beating, could not be tried as an adult on that charge. He remained in jail pending an appeal by prosecutors. An appellate court on Thursday ordered a hearing to be held within three days on his request for release. The other five defendants are free on bond.

Medium shot horse and carriage passing in front of store in Old Havana 26. Close up sign of Fidel Castro in store window (Spanish) "50th Anniversary of the Revolution" STORYLINE: Cuban schoolchildren, sporting the red neckerchiefs of the Communist Pioneers, visited the Museum of the Revolution in Havana - a shrine to the people and events that transformed Cuba into a communist state 50 years ago on New Year's Day. The boys and girls mingled with foreigners visiting the Cold War outpost on the verge of a new year full of uncertainty. The museum is in Fulgencio Batista's former presidential palace, which armed revolutionaries assaulted in a failed 1957 assassination attempt. The children are among 70 percent of Cuba's 11.2 million people born after the revolution, never knowing a government without Fidel or Raul Castro. Their eyes widened at antique guns and bloodstained clothes of revolutionary martyrs, but they weren't stirred by yellowed newspapers and typewriters. Museum pieces include the boots Raul Castro wore as a 27-year-old rebel commander with a ponytail, and the bronze plate of a Westinghouse steam turbine belonging to General Electric when it was nationalised in August 1960. Outside, a glass structure encases the American yacht Granma, which arrived in eastern Cuba on December 2, 1956, carrying 82 men led by Fidel Castro to launch a rebel war. There's also the Soviet tank Castro rode in during the US-backed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion and the turbine of the American U-2 spy plane shot down in 1962 when the Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink of nuclear destruction. Three blocks away, at the easternmost point of the capital's Malecon coastal highway, a crowd greeted a 32-year-old Fidel Castro when he and his bearded men reached Havana on January 8, 1959, one week after their revolutionary victory in eastern Cuba. "It was grandiose for Cuba. Imagine, the triumph of the revolution. There was a party all around here," said 70-year-old Sergio Cardenas. "Batista had fallen and the revolution had arrived. A new era and a new situation had arrived for the people of Cuba," added Cardenas, who was a 20-year-old student cheering in the crowd on Malecon Avenue the day Fidel Castro's convoy came into town. Despite sanctions imposed by 10 American presidents in an effort to overthrow the island's leaders, Cuba's revolution has persevered long after the Iron Curtain collapsed and communist China and Vietnam embraced free markets while still maintaining their political systems. On the other side of Havana Bay looms the stone-and-mortar Spanish fortress where revolutionary Commander Ernesto "Che" directed executions of several hundred Batista police and army officials accused of torturing and killing opponents. Hector Palacios, a Cuban dissident whom had been jailed along with 74 others in the spring of 2003 and later released for health reasons, said the island's policy of isolationism would have to come to an end now that there was a man in the White House willing to hold talks with Cuban President Raul Castro. Palacios said he was in Washington last October and testified before a commission on Capitol Hill about conditions in Cuba and how the US government could make better use of the 48 million US dollars currently spent every year on attempting to democratise the island's political system. "Why do we have 250 political prisoners? Why aren't any of us recognised? This is an embargo, a real embargo, and that one must be lifted. You cannot hold talks with guns in your hands; you must hold talks un-armed," said Palacios. The 219 political prisoners last counted by the independent Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation are housed in penitentiaries shared with common prisoners across the island. Fidel Castro acknowledged holding as many as 15,000 political prisoners in 1964. After sending gays to work camps in the 1960s, communist Cuba now accepts homosexuality, but not political opposition. These days, gays gather openly at the Fiat dealership on the Malecon coastal highway - a witness to some of revolutionary Cuba's most dramatic moments. The highway was built in 1901 when American forces occupied Cuba after the Spanish-American War. Across the street are blocks of century-old, multi-storey apartment buildings with peeling paint and exposed bricks, some of which have been restored through a foreign-funded renovation project. Reminders of Cuba's revolution include Russian-made Lada sedans, new Chinese buses, 1950s Chevrolet and Ford sedans abandoned by people who went into exile nearly five decades ago but kept chugging along with Soviet tractor engines. The government provides free health care, education and a heavily subsidised food ration and other social services, but the average monthly state salary of 20 US dollars forces people to seek second jobs. An aging Fidel Castro marched six or seven blocks of the same route numerous times before he had intestinal surgery in August 2006 and ceded power to his younger brother Raul. Seven months before falling ill, he looked determined, but walked stiffly, in a protest condemning Luis Posada Carriles, a Cuba-born militant accused of a jetliner bombing and other terrorist acts. The state of the ailing 82-year-old's health is a state secret. He does not appear in public and looks increasingly gaunt in occasional official photographs, although he still writes essays that are read in full on state television news broadcasts.
