Dengue fever vaccine research, Bangkok, Thailand, 2008
Scientist researching a vaccine for dengue fever at the Institute of Vaccine Control in Bangkok, Thailand, 2008. The dengue virus (DENV), transmitted by mosquito bites, causes the tropical disease dengue fever in humans. Symptoms can range from a mild fever and joint pain to spontaneous skin bleeding and death due to circulatory failure. It is thought to infect up to 400 million people a year, and lead to around 40,000 deaths a year. Prevention is centred around the elimination of mosquitos, and two vaccines now exist, having been approved in 2016 and 2022 respectively.
