03:36 ""Todd Alcott"" by Skip Blumberg. Hyper, obsessed, New York resident Todd Alcott laments over the stress of his big-city lifestyle. 16:37 ""Phoebe Legere"" by Skip Blumberg. Phoebe Legere, a New York lounge singer, prepares for her performance and shares some insights. ""Criticism is easy...but art is very difficult,"" says Legere. She comments about being on TV, ""I hope it'll conquer my shyness."" A scantily clad Legere insists that ""sex is the last thing on [her] mind."" 20:29 ""Father Bill Davis/Christic Institute"" By Eddie Becker. Father Bill Davis spent the last ten years in a poor, drug-infested neighborhood a stone 's throw away from the nation's capital in Washington D.C. He's outraged at the government's ""war on drugs."" Davis comments that ""It's just a PR campaign...how can we purport to have a major war on drugs when foreign policy supports drug cartels?"" He is convinced that drugs are only part of the problem - unemployment, housing conditions and hunger are the real issues. ""People who have very few choices in their lives are told to say no,"" he says. 32:45 ""Harold Pinter in London"" by Chuck Olin. Playwright Harold Pinter speaks about political and economic changes in Eastern Europe: ""We in the free West have a responsibility to the people of Eastern Europe who have demonstrated incredible courage...There, the words 'freedom' and 'democracy' mean cheap labor. We have to look at our obligation..."" 34:22 ""Witness"" by Barbra Nei and Judith Yourman. Various witnesses recall events. Although the courts claim that eyewitness testimony is the best testimony, the truth is that more people are wrongly convicted by eyewitness testimony than anything else. 39:08 ""John H. Davis"" by Skip Blumberg. A piece about the theories of John H. Davis, author of Mafia Kingfish , who is convinced not only that the Mafia was involved in the assassinations of John and Bobby Kennedy, but is also sure that the CIA covered it up. 43:27 ""Washington Pro-Choice Demonstration"" by Eddie Becker. A raw, unedited tape of a pro-choice demonstration in Washington D.C., in which police threaten the media. ""You have five minutes to leave or you get locked up,"" an officer says. The crowd chants, ""Just like China! Just like China!"" Police verbally abuses cameraman: ""Get outta my face..."" 49:53 ""Abortion: Past, Present and Future"" by Educational Video Center. On her way to get an abortion, a woman admits that she is glad she doesn't have to go to a ""butcher"" for the procedure. Another woman who had an abortion in 1946 offers a graphic description of what it was like when abortions were performed in back rooms under less than sterile conditions. Since then she has vowed to help legalize a woman's right to an abortion.
MEYERS/NO LIVE SNL
00:00:00:15 there will be no 'saturday night live' this week. Right. Nbc will have to show re-runs or do something else with the time. unfortunately that's true. We'll not have a show. 13:10:02 //// reporter: That's got to -- you have to have mixed feelings. You want to see the shows go on. You've been doing a lot of planning. It's not as if you come up with everything this week and throw it on the air. A lot of work's involved. //// yeah. Look. 13:10:15 I think i speak for all of the writers out here, all of us would rather be going to work this week. We all love our jobs. We all know how lucky we are to have jobs in television writing. But, you know, it's just about fair compensation and, you know, media's changing. With new media right now and the internet, i think everybody can see how television is going to change in the future, we just want to make sure we take care of it with this contract (0:46) /

Residents in the town of Tamoun said youths tossed stones and bottles at Israeli troops, while the soldiers responded with what appeared to be live fire. A resident said eight men were wounded, some by live fire. He said the wanted men belonged to the Islamic Jihad militant group. The man said the clashes began early on Tuesday after Israeli forces dressed as merchants arrested one man. He said regular forces then entered the town, and men began hurling rocks at them to prevent other arrests. The Israeli military had no immediate comment. 42334 1950s BOXING MATCHES WILLIE PEP v LULU PEREZ BOB BAKER v. CLARENCE HENRY ARCHIE MOORE
American boxing in its golden era is presented. Television boomed in the years following WWII, and boxing was at its peak in the 1950's; many of the legendary swingers had participated in the conflict and returned home to the ring. Filmmakers loved sports and boxing was no exception; fights were aired live on the weekends. This film features sluggers such as Chico Vejar, Clarence Henry, Bob Baker, Lulu Perez, and Willie Pep.

The first match pits Willie Pep against the sprite swinger Lulu Perez on February 26th, 1954 at Madison Square Garden. Boxing became so contagious in American culture it needed its own ring. This is where fighters came for recognition. This fight was shrouded in controversy as it was claimed it was fixed. Pep fought just 5 times in '54 losing once only to Perez. Willie Pep (:10) launches up from his corner. Lulu swings fast at Pep (:13) who throws heavy hits back (:21). Heavy hits from Pep to Perez (:33). Perez toes away from Pep (:42) and sinks one hard to Pep's jaw (:42). Pep goes down (:45). Perez keeps swinging (:58). Perez takes a slug to the face and sinks to his buttocks (1:36); head between knees. The knockdown follows in slow motion (1:44). Lulu stands over Perez (2:04). Willie's back on his feet (2:22), but he’s getting blustered (2:26). The knockdown plays in slow motion (2:43). The ref lifts him; New York Boxing Commission rules three knockdowns in a single round means Willie's comeback is shattered (2:48). Lulu jumps around in his corner (3:05); wounds licked and sweat moped. Bob Baker faces Clarence Henry; November 23, 1951. Baker was on a winning streak until this match. Henry won the 1948 Golden Gloves Tournament and was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998. The microphone hangs in front of the announcer (3:22). Baker (3:32) meets with white trunked Henry in the center of the ring. Heavy strokes from Baker (3:49). Henry sends quick jabs back (4:43). Baker sends a hard left hook (5:14). Baker goes down (5:21) head over the edge and knees over the rope (5:25). The ref drag him up (5:39). The knockout in slow motion (5:32). Chico Vejar faces Johnny "Red" DeFazio. Chico; "Stamford Socking Schoolboy,” was one of the more popular fighters during this era. Chico starred in 'The Midnight Story' in 1957. He later become a public relations expert. DeFazio was a 21 year older fighter from Jersey. Vejar (6:51) appears in black shorts. Chico pushes DeFazio around the ring (7:27). Chico sends two right hooks for DeFazio; (7:48) and (7:58). DeFazio wobbles back after another (8:12) leaving him flat arms outstretched (8:15). Chico stays on him (8:28). Red keeps taking hits (8:54) until sinking to his stool (9:03). Ref Miller calls the fight (9:26) in Chico's favor. Bob Satterfield faces Elkin Brothers on January 19th of 1951. Satterfield was rated by Ring Magazine as ‘one of the best punchers of all time’. He had a kamikaze style of fighting. He also reportedly lived a double life as a boxer and a pimp. This was Satterfield's debut in New York. Brothers appears in white trunks (10:15). Satterfield throws heavy swings (10:28) taking Brothers down. Satterfield sinks after a hard blow (11:39). A strong left hook sends Brothers to the ground (13:44). The Ref calls the fight in Satterfield's favor (13:50). Joey Giardello faces Walter Cartier on February 5th 1954. Giardello adopted his name in order to join the army underage. His statue stands in Philadelphia. Cartier would later go on to begin an acting career starring in the sitcom "The Phil Silver's Show". A right to the jaw sends Cartier down (15:36). Slow motion footage (15:60). Cartier down again (17:58). Archie Moore faces Harold Johnson (18:26) on August 11th 1954. *Archie went on to train Muhammad Ali and co-starred in 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'.) Heavy swings from Archie (19:18). Johnson sinks (19:21). The Ref calls the fight (19:40). Archie approaches Johnson for a hug as he is called the winner and retains his title (19:44). Sugar Ray Robinson faces Carl Bobo Olson in December of 1955. Sugar Ray is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. During the years of '43-'51 he went on an undefeated streak. Joe Lewis and Robinson served in the military together. Bobo obtained his boxing license at 16. Bout at Chicago Stadium (20:06). A close shot shows good hits from both (21:43). Ray sinks combo (22:43). Olson slumps back (22:54). He rolls to his feet at the count of ten (23:05). Sugar Ray jumps up as he takes the win (23:10).

This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. LAUGHTER AND LIFE
Laughter and Life - Presented by Sidney James. CHECK COPYRIGHT FOR FEATURE FILM MATERIAL.

Reel 1 M/S of Sid James as he sits at a table and writes in a book. He speaks to camera: "Hang on, I'm just rewriting a diabolical gag." He does his trademark laugh. He smiles and quotes: "Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone." He then begins to speculate on the power of laughter. He introduces a sequence of film clips by pointing out that there is a lot of violence and cruelty in much that is funny.

Extract from a British silent comedy film. Nightclub setting, two women start a cat fight and their partners chase each other over and under dining tables. One of the men climbs up onto a balcony. Other men in the nightclub join in the proceedings. A stunt woman dangles from the balcony when part of it is pulled down. One woman pulls the other's skirt off. Slapstick antics. Sid informs us that one of the stars was Syd Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's half-brother. This is possibly an extract from "A Little Bit of Fluff" (1928).

Extract from a Charlie Drake film, "Sands of the Desert" (1960) follows. Charlie is in a Middle Eastern bazaar setting. Much crashing through windows, knocking over market stalls, throwing melons, fighting locals, woman trying to paint the scene around her, melons falling on Charlie's head etc.

Sid discusses the ingredients essential for "slapstick" humour then we see an example from the film "My Learned Friend". Will Hay and Claude Hulbert engage in a bar room brawl with humorous falls, punches, throws, loud sound effects, breaking bottles etc. More slapstick is featured in an extract from the George Formby film "Trouble Brewing" (1939). We see George in a brewery setting swinging on ropes, making his pursuers fall into vats of beer etc.

Another extract from a George Formby film - "Come on George" (1939). George is running along the top of a train as it travels at speed. The train approaches a tunnel, George says "ooh, somebody save me!" and jumps through a doorway just in time.

Monty Banks has to deal with a jealous husband in "Adam's Apple" (1928). They have a comedy fight in a gymnasium. Weights, boxing bag, gymnasium horse, etc are used as props and weapons.

Stanley Lupino and Bruce Seton are seen having a fight in "Lucky to Me" (1939). Stanley is thrown around a living room whilst the girlfriend tries to stop the fight with pathetic pleading.

The ingredients of the "cliff-hanger" are described - suspense plus danger. George Formby is seen on the ledge of a tall building. He slips and knocks a piece of plaster work on a man below. He hangs on to a piece of pipe which then comes loose from the wall. "Somebody save me!"

Monty Banks swings on a rope high above a busy road in an attempt to rescue "some bird or other" He grabs the girl and she swings backwards and forwards with him. A drunken man in top hat saves them by grabbing the girl's leg with his walking stick. He leaves Monty hanging on the rope outside the window.

Reel 2 Disguises are an important part of a comic's business Sid tells us. Will Hay and John Mills are seen in a scene from "Black Sheep of Whitehall" (1942) where Will Hay is dressed as a nurse. We then see Hay as the schoolmaster in "Ghost of St Michael's" (1941). Charles Hawtrey plays a know-it-all schoolboy. Continued.

Stanley Lupino and Gus McNaughton are seen in "Happy" (1933) showing techniques of "quick fire back chat" in a scene about an invention for a new car alarm.

Robertson Hare and Alfred Drayton appear in a comedy scene. Two toffs chase after a butler, they pull off his trousers. A man is tied up inside a grandfather clock. Detectives come to the door.

"Bunny" as Robertson Hare is known, sits and talks to Sid James in the studio. He reminisces about all the films he made with Alfred Drayton. Tom Walls and Ralph Lynn are mentioned. Bunny talks about how well the Aldwych Farces were written and produced. Sid asks Bunny "How many times did they have the pants off you?" Bunny gives us his catch phrase "Oh calamity!" They have a laugh together.

Sid talks about "Dead of Night" (1945) in which Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford play friendly rivals at golf and in love. The girl sits between them as they moan about how she puts them off their game. They decide to play a game for the affections of the woman. Some cheating goes on. The loser walks off the golf course and straight into the lake, going under until only his hat floats on the top.

Continued in reel 3 - see Film ID 2281.07.

(WISH) Two weeks after the Richmond industrial fire, some residents are returning to their homes to start cleaning up while concerned about their health after particulates were released in the air.
\n

\n
Robert Gioeli lives less than half a mile from where the fire occurred. He says when he finally returned, his house was full of soot. Now, he and his partner have to empty the house to clean it and everything they own from top to bottom.
\n

\n
You know, now were just cleaning it up wearing N95s, hopefully, thats enough to mitigate some of the health risks, said Gioeli.
\n

\n
Gioeli says he has a 7-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter and is taking cleaning very seriously because he does not want them to breathe in any particulates.
\n

\n
It makes me kinda nervous because what if I dont do a good job cleaning it up, because there were I think thousands of chemicals in that building, said Gioeli. So, just to know they could be exposed to more if I cant get it all cleaned up is kind of concerning.
\n

\n
The Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies held a community Help Line Live event where people could ask questions after the fire.
\n

\n
Yeah, I worry a lot, said Floyed Holmes, a resident that lives two and a half blocks away from the fire.
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n
I worry about chemicals and asbestos getting into my house, around my house where you cant see or later on. Something can happen later from this fire. We just dont know, Holmes said.
\n

\n
Many were upset this fire happened after the business was cited for unsafe practices and nothing was done.
\n

\n
Im upset because the guy didnt do anything, or lets put it this way, whoever was sapota take care of it didnt but thats how life goes, said Kebra Hoskins, a resident who lives one block away from the fire site.
\n

\n
Others say former health concerns are now top of mind with the additional risk from the fire. Frederick Lee Scott lives in the evacuation zone with his wife Sue Ann Scott, who is a cancer survivor.
\n

\n
We wanted to make sure that she gets all the information she needs to know what the chemicals are, what they are going to do to us in the long haul, said Frederick. And it just seemed like we came here, we thought it would be more organized, but it didnt seem like it was that organized.
\n

\n
People returning to the city were given clean-up kits with dish soap, rags, masks, and gloves to wash their houses. Residents say they were instructed to only pick up any remaining debris with gloves on and to double bag it before throwing it away.
\n

\n
Station Notes/Scripts:
\n

\n
SUPERS
\n
TWO WEEKS AFTER RICHMOND FIRE, RESIDENTS CONCERNED ABOUT LASTING EFFECTS
\n
Danielle Zulkosky | /Danielle Zulkosky
\n
ROBERT GIOELI | LIVES CLOSE TO FIRE SITE
\n
KEBRA HOSKINS | LIVES CLOSE TO FIRE SITE
\n
FLOYED HOLMES | LIVES CLOSE TO FIRE
\n
FREDERICK LEE SCOTT | LIVES CLOSE TO FIRE SITE WITH HIS WIFE SUE ANN SCOTT
\n

\n
SCRIPT
\n

\n
(ANCHOR)
\n

\n
IT'S BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE THE RICHMOND INDUSTRIAL FIRE AND NEIGHBORS CLOSE TO THE SCENE ARE FINALLY STARTING TO CLEAN UP THE MESS LEFT BEHIND.
\n
THOSE THAT LIVE CLOSEST TO THE SITE TELL NEWS 8'S DANIELLE ZULKOSKY THEY ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE LASTING EFFECTS FROM THE CHEMICALS.
\n
DANIELLE JOINS US LIVE FROM RICHMOND WHERE community members voiced their CONCERNS.
\n

\n
(LIVE)
\n
IT'S FOURTEEN DAYS AFTER THE RICHMOND INDUSTRIAL FIRE CAUSED PEOPLE TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES AND SOME ARE JUST NOW COMING BACK TO CLEAN UP THE MESS.
\n
THEY TELL ME THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE LASTING EFFECTS FROM CHEMICALS AND PARTICLES IN THE AIR.
\n

\n
(PKG)
\n

\n
ROBERT GIOELI LIVES LESS THAN HALF A MILE FROM WHERE THE FIRE OCCURED -- HE SAYS WHEN HE FINALLY RETURNED HIS HOUSE WAS FULL OF SOOT SO NOW HE AND HIS PARTNER HAVE TO EMPY THE HOUSE TO CLEAN IT AND EVERYTHING THEY OWN FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.
\n

\n
((ROBERT GIOELI/LIVES CLOSE TO FIRE SITE: "YOU KNOW NOW JUST CLEANING IT UP WEARING N-95'S HOPEFULLY THAT'S ENOUGH TO MITIGATE SOME OF THE HEALTH RISKS."))
\n

\n
GIOELI SAYS HE HAS A 7 YEAR OLD SON AND A 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. THE WORKHOUSE WARD reel 3
Duplicate copy of Reel 3 of documentary entitled "The Workhouse Ward" - check against tape PM1843 for best quality.

Reel 3. C/U of the Widow Donohoe knocking on the door of the ward. Sign on door reads Ward B. She walks int, the men do nothing. She asks them which one of them was Mike McInerney. He asks: "Who's that calling me by me name?" She explains that she is his sister. He moans about the fact that she has never visited him in five years. She describes her house and grounds. She talks of the food she gets from the sea - cockles and periwinkles. She suggests that he comes to live with her. She is a bit worried though about the fact that he is confined to his bed. He says it is only on the odd times that the colic rises up within him. She thinks of a few little jobs that he would be able to help her with. She hands him a suit of clothes to wear and a hat. She wants him to look decent for the neighbours of Cotton Row (?) He gets excited about all the animals and blossom and good things that lay in wait for him. He announces that "age will go from me and I'll be young again." His neighbour moans about being left behind in the workhouse. McInerney offers to leave him his pipe. He responds: "What signifies tobacco, all I'm craving is the talk..." McInerney suggests that two are better than one - that the two of them together will make one hardy man. She recognises Miskell as her old neighbour. She then observes that the two of them were always fighting with each other when they were neighbours before so she doesn't think it is a good idea McInerney refuses to go without his friend. She asks for her suit back, she is given it and she leaves the ward. C/U of McInerney smiling. They both lay down as if to sleep. The friend says: "Maybe her house is not so wide as what she says..." They start to have another argument, mostly about periwinkles. McInerney throws a pillow at his neighbour and he calls for the Mother Superior. They have a pillow fight. L/S of the gates of the workhouse. The narrator announces that McInerney will never hear from the Widow Donohoe again and suggests that he is a fool to spurn her hospitality. C/U of widow and donkey. L/S them travelling along a primitive street. "Would anyone believe that a man would sooner sit cramped in his workhouse bed fighting with an even bigger fool than himself when he could live in peace in a fine rich house." L/S of sea rolling in.
Credits: Michael Miskell - Michael J. Dolan, Mike McInerney - Eric Gorman, Widow Donohoe - Eileen Crowe, Narrator - Denis O'Dea, Stage Direction by Ria Mooney.
Note: This film is funnier than the summary above probably suggests!
