Titles read: 'The Co-operative Productive Federation presents - THE ELEVATION OF LABOUR'.

Reel 1. Foreword talks of the History of Labour being the history of man, and says the purpose of this film is to show the success of Co-operative Co-Partnership, and how some of the products of the Federation are manufactured.

Title introduces the England of a century and a half ago, with the village the centre of social life. Scenic shots of countryside - houses, river, workers on farm fields. People in old-fashioned dress (1830s or 1840s?) ride along in open train carriages pulled by an early steam train. Smoking chimney signals industrial age. Windows of factory. Titles detail poor wages and conditions of factory workers at time. Actors recreate scene of boy and woman handing over bag of something to boss who gives them a few coins. The boys looks despondent and limps off with his mother. Factory workers coming out of building in shawls and ragged Victorian clothing. Well-dressed woman greets a man coming out of a large house and they walk off together (wealthy owner of factory, according to titles).

Title talks of Trade Unions gaining strength and influence in improving conditions for workers. Shot of happy women workers coming out of factory building in the 1930s. Line of people queue for their wages inside. Headline in newspaper about profits of company giving higher dividends for shareholders. Title talks of Co-operative Co-partnership, with employees electing their own board of directors and attaining the ideal of self-employment. Tailors at work in Co-operative company. Cheery girls on their way to work. Title about 44 Co-operative factories providing security, happiness and efficiency for workers. Men operate large adding machines; others operating machinery (looks lke Braille cards being punched). Newspaper or book printing works - machinery in action - good footage. RHAPSODY IN STEEL
Animation. The parts of a Ford motor car assemble themselves in a magical fashion through the aid of stop frame animation. All set to music (no voiceover) - very cute and beautifully animated.

Montage sequence of new cars being driven off the production line intercut with intertitles proclaiming: "Production Schedule for To-Day 5000 - completed 4996" then 4997, 4998 and 4999. C/U of a whistle blowing. Tools are handed over at the end of the day. Turning drills slow down and stop. Everything on the factory floor comes to a standstill. C/U of a time card being punched. C/U of men's feet as they leave the factory. C/U of one man's feet. Camera pans up his body to show him looking up into the air. Cut to the Production Schedule sign - 4999 completed. He removes his hat and scratches his head. Later, falling asleep in an armchair his newspaper falls from his hand. He begins to dream. C/U of the radiator of a Ford V8. Suddenly the logo on the badge turns into a cartoon figure - a Peter Pan like boy who begins to climb all over the car, sliding along, doing handstands etc. He looks at the production target and looks puzzled. Then he has an idea. In a think bubble a car with the number 5000 appears. He flies up on to the machinery hanging down in the factory and blows on a horn. Various spare bits and pieces which have been hiding under ledges begin to move (through stop frame animation) and assemble. Our cartoon friend floats down from the ceiling by means of small parachutes which turn into small pipes. He plays a tune on his pipes. The pieces begin to assemble themselves, doing little dances. The cartoon character puts a large hat on and becomes a kind of marching majorette making the pieces all move around and fall into place. At one point he has to fix a flat tyre. Kaleidoscopic sequence with multiple images of pistons. Parts which look like women wearing skirts do a dance. Some springs bob up and down. Some parts make up a small rowing boat shape. We see the pistons inserting themselves into place. The engine gradually builds itself. Our cartoon friend wears a Napoleon 's hat and looks through a telescope. He takes his clothes off and starts the fan which propels the engine through the air. The engine lands on the chassis. The bodywork puts itself together. Our friend looks at his shiny reflection in the bodywork.

He dances and then magic's himself away in a puff of smoke. The bodywork puts itself on the chassis. High in the sky we see the bonnet flapping its sides like a bird. Our cartoon friend sits on the bonnet and is brought down to the ground with a bump. Interior of the car - Peter Pan operates the controls. Suddenly a fire breathing dragon appears and scares the pixie boy. He flies out of the car window and throws a nut through the car window. It comes flying back at him and knocks him flying. Little birds fly around his head. He climbs up to the window and puts his window on the smashed part. It repairs itself. He then walks on the bonnet. He takes out a stethoscope and listens to the bonnet. We see the engine at work. Pixie boy places a rosette on the front of the radiator which reads: " Champion". The rosette turns into the V8 logo. Pixie boy does some somersaults and then magic's the sign to read: "Completed 5000." He climbs back into place on the front badge, taking bows and then changing to the V8 logo.

Note: This film is in the public domain therefore not Pathe copyright.
