Chemical garden growth
Close-up timelapse footage of the growth of a chemical garden . This is a solution of sodium silicate (also called glasswater, or liquid glass) to which a metal salt has been added. In this case, the salt is cobalt (II) chloride. The salt partially dissolves in the water and the ions react to form a thin layer of insoluble cobalt silicate. This layer is semi-permeable, and the more concentrated salt solution inside the tube pushes outwards due to osmosis. This bursts the tube, releasing more salt solution and forming a new tube, and the process continues. As the pressure is greater further down the water column, the tubes grow upwards. The colour of the tubes depends on the transition metal used. In this case, the colour change from pink to blue is due to the change in hydration of the cobalt ions. This clip is speeded up 10 times.

The consortium of octopuses clustered around a hydrothermal vent an opening in the seafloor where warm, chemical-rich fluids flow out about 10,500 feet (3,200 meters) down in whats known as the midnight zone, a place of perpetual darkness.
\n

\n
The octopus garden found on a small hill near the base of Davidson Seamount, an extinct underwater volcano 80 miles (128.7 kilometers) southwest of Monterey, California was full of a species called Muusoctopus robustus, nicknamed the pearl octopus by the research team because of the way they look while upside down protecting their eggs.
\n

\n
ADVERTISING
\n

\n
The find is the largest known aggregation of octopuses on the planet researchers counted more than 6,000 octopuses in just one segment of the site.
\n

\n
We think there may be 20,000 octopus there. And the question is, well, why are they there? And why are they aggregating? It looks like the warm waters that are emanating from these springs is a key to why these animals are breeding there, said Jim Barry, a senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
\n

\n
Researchers believe the octopuses migrate to the deep-sea thermal springs in such numbers to mate and nest, according to a new study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances. After laying eggs, expectant octopus moms keep the eggs clean and guard them from predators. The warmer temperatures speed up the creatures embryonic development.
\n

\n
Very long brooding periods increase the likelihood that a mothers eggs wont survive. By nesting at hydrothermal springs, octopus moms give their offspring a leg up, explained Barry, who was the lead author of the study.
\n

\n
The ambient water temperature at 10,500 feet is 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 degrees Celsius). However, the water temperature in cracks and crevices at the octopus garden reaches about 51 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius).
\n

\n
State-of-the-art underwater technology allowed researchers to understand the octopus garden.
\n
State-of-the-art underwater technology allowed researchers to understand the octopus garden.
\n
MBARI
\n
Underwater technology
\n
The researchers at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and their colleagues at other institutions used state-of-the-art underwater technology to understand the octopus garden.
\n

\n
The institutes ROV Don Ricketts went on 14 day-long follow-up dives to the site between 2019 and 2022, taking high-definition video of the octopuses and mapping the octopus garden at a meter-scale resolution.
\n

\n
The remotely operated submersible also left a time-lapse camera and sensors to measure temperature and oxygen levels for long-term observations of the octopuses behavior. The camera recorded an image every 20 minutes, taking about 12,200 images from March 2022 to August 2022.
\n

\n
Researchers found that the octopuses' eggs hatched in less than two years much more quickly than the team had expected.
\n
Researchers found that the octopuses' eggs hatched in less than two years much more quickly than the team had expected.
\n
MBARI
\n
Faster brood times in the octopus garden
\n
With this information, scientists pieced together why the octopus are attracted to the site. Scars and other distinguishing features allowed the scientists to monitor individual octopuses and the development of their broods.
\n

\n
The presence of adult male and female octopuses, developing eggs and octopus hatchlings indicated that the site is used exclusively as a breeding ground and nursery. The team did not observe any intermediate-size individuals or any evidence of feeding.
\n

\n
We see hatchlings swimming away. Weve never seen any small animals that suggests that they live right here. So they swim off somewhere and they start their life, Barry said.
\n

\n
The study found that the eggs hatched in less than two years much more quickly than the team had expected. One deep-sea octopus species broods its eggs for four and a half years. Away from the hydrothermal vents in the near-freezing temperatures of the deep sea, egg-brooding periods are thought to last for several years.
\n

\n
Although its risky to brood in this warm water you may be cooking your eggs, you may have abnormalities the shorter brood period is where the advantage comes in and that seems to play out perfectly for them because we see what looks to be fairly high hatch rates, he said.
\n

\n
Scientists believe the site off the coast of Monterey, California, is used exclusively as a breeding ground and nursery.
\n
Scientists believe the site off the coast of Monterey, California, is used exclusively as a breeding ground and nursery.
\n
MBARI
\n
Unraveling mysteries of the octopus life cycle
\n
The researchers believe warmth from thermal springs increased the metabolism of female octopuses and their eggs, reducing the time required for incubation and making it less likely that the eggs are eaten by predators. However, its not clear whether this warmth is absolutely necessary for this species to reproduce and nest or something they simply like to seek out.
\n

\n
This April 24, 2016 image made available by NOAA shows a bioluminescent jellyfish during a deepwater exploration of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument area in the Pacific Ocean near Guam and Saipan. Dives in the expedition ranged from 250 to 6,000 meters (820 feet to 3.7 miles) deep. (NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research via AP)
\n
What we know about the oceans depths and why its so risky to explore it
\n
The researchers will continue to study the site at Davidson Mount and want to look for places with similar geology that could host other octopus gardens, although deep-sea exploration is very expensive, Barry said.
\n

\n
Octopuses are famously self-sacrificial parents after laying a clutch of eggs, they quit eating and waste away, typically dying by the time the eggs hatch. Dead octopus and vulnerable hatchlings provide a feast for invertebrates such as sea anemones and sea stars that live side by side with the brooding octopuses.
\n

\n
Researchers have documented a total of four deep-sea octopus gardens to date two off the coast of Central California on the Davidson Mount and two off the coast of Costa Rica.
\n

\n

\n
Station Notes/Scripts:
\n
{***INTRO***}
\n
A MAJOR DISCOVERY HAS BEEN MADE OFF CALIFORNIA'S CENTRAL COAST.
\n
EXPERTS SAY THEY'VE FOUND THE LARGEST OCTOPUS NURSERY IN THE WORLD.
\n
CHRISTIAN BALDERAS SPOKE TO RESEARCHERS WHO HELPED FIND IT.
\n

\n
Supers:
\n
Amanda Kahn/Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
\n
Jim Barry/Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
\n

\n
{***PKG***}
\n
RESEARCHERS CALL THIS THE OCTOPUS GARDEN.
\n
IT'S THE LARGEST KNOWN OCTOPUS NURSERY IN THE WORLD, WITH ABOUT 20 THOUSAND OF THESE 8-LEGGED CEPHALOPODS, CALLED PEARL OCTOPI.
\n
THEY'RE LOCATED TWO MILES DOWN AND 80 MILES OFF THE COAST OF MOSS LANDING.
\n

\n

\n

\n
AMANDA KAHN OF MOSS LANDING MARINE LABORATORIES, is ONE OF A GROUP OF RESEARCHERS THAT FIRST MADE THE DISCOVERY IN 2018 BY ACCIDENT... GEORGE FLOYD SQUARE CONTROVERSY: BARRIERS REMOVED (2021)
Minneapolis has started the process of reopening 38th and Chicago, but many people in the community said they are puzzled at the timing of the decision. People who were at George Floyd Square on Thursday said they were shocked the city would reopen the intersection before the sentencing of former police officer Derek Chauvin and the trial for the other officers involved in Floyd's death. Others said they don't feel the same way. As barricades in George Floyd Square came down on Thursday, people spoke up. "The city tried to come through with their power, that's why there's no peace and prosperity behind you," said Jay Webb, a gardener at George Floyd Square. Activists led chants for justice. After the city removed barricades, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS saw community members putting barriers back up. People said they are still experiencing grief, and Minneapolis clergy invited to help with healing. "I was shocked and stunned to find out that the streets are being opened, and so I felt that I needed to be here," said the Rev. Angela Khabeb, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis. "What surprises me is I feel like not all people's pain was taken into consideration of the timing and how this was opened," said the Rev. Jia Starr Brown, senior pastor at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis. The city reopened the area in the dark, early morning hours. "It seemed kind of sneaky, and that's a concern I have about that," Starr Brown said. "You see the community response. It's visible that the majority of the community is not OK with the removal of the barricades," Khabeb added. The removal of the barricades is a move at least one resident said he supports. For fear of retaliation for his views, he did not want us to use his face or name. He said his close relative lives right outside of George Floyd Square. He says it was beautiful to see everyone coming together for something that really mattered, but now he said it's time for the barriers to be removed. "People don't understand that there are human beings that live in these houses. ... There are businesses here who — these people, I mean, they can't even come in and out, they have to struggle to come in and out," he said. " ... These are real-life problems, and nobody wants to talk about it, but the only thing people care about is leaving these barricades in." At a news conference Thursday in George Floyd Square, Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, said city officials have not done enough to hold police accountable. "The trauma that was caused today is a test to all of us to see if we will demand justice," Hussein said.
