Created by Air France in the 1950s, "Flight to Immortal Rome" was directed by the talented Andre de la Varre. By 1924, he was working with filmmaker Burton Holmes and eventually struck out on his own as an independent producer with a short film series called “Screen Traveler” in the thirties. Columbia Pictures commissioned him to provide material for a number of their own documentary shorts starting in 1939, recycling some footage he shot earlier in France as well as new material scouted mostly in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean on account of the war in Europe. He returned to Burton Holmes Inc. shortly before the founder’s passing in 1958 and was soon busy with lengthy features like 1965’s Grand Tour of London and Paris (by Day and by Night). Collaborating on many of these was his son André De La Varre Jr. <p><p>Despite financial problems with the Burton Holmes company and a shrinking market for travelogues, he still managed another well-received 90 minute feature These States for the Bicentennial Council in 1975. ANTALYA, TÜRKİYE - APR. 26, 2025: The Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye is celebrating a major milestone this year as it kicks off its 60th edition, marking the start of a new decade and a fresh chapter in the event's storied history. Speaking to Anadolu, Vladimiros Petsas, events coordinator at the European Cycling Union and race director of the tour, emphasized the significance of reaching 60 editions. He said not many races around the world have achieved this, noting that while classics like the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France are older, the Tour of Türkiye’s longevity reflects strong dedication and resilience. "It is particularly important because it marks the beginning of a new decade, symbolizing a fresh start and continued growth for the event," said Petsas. He praised the strength of the 2025 lineup, which features top riders from WorldTour, ProTour, and Continental levels, promising "a thrilling race" for cycling fans. Previous editions of the tour saw top-tier riders such as Mark Cavendish and Jasper Philipsen. Petsas also expressed his appreciation for the warm reception from the Turkish public. Silva's comments followed a three-hour private meeting with his increasingly alienated Iranian counterpart, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the first Iranian leader to visit Brazil since pro-US Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi toured Brazil in 1965. But Ahmadinejad made no promises and defiantly said Iran would try to improve its uranium-enrichment technology if it could not buy enriched uranium abroad. The two leaders didn't say whether they discussed Iranian war games that started a day earlier, driving oil prices higher, or the case of three American hikers who were detained in Iran after they crossed an unmarked border while hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan in July. The US State Department had said it hoped Brazil would broach the subject. Ahmadinejad's remarks on uranium enrichment came less than a week after Iran indicated it would not export its enriched uranium for further processing, effectively rejecting the latest plan brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency and aimed at delaying Iran's ability to build a nuclear weapon. Under the IAEA plan, Iran would have exported its uranium for enrichment in Russia and France where it would be converted into fuel rods, which would be returned to Iran about a year later. The rods can power reactors but cannot be readily turned into weapons-grade material.
