That's what I hope you can take away today is, I'm not going to say anything about water or no water. We got the measurements we need to address the questions." 17. AP TELEVISION Washington, DC 20. Wide of people watching lunar surface on screen STORYLINE NASA smacked two spacecraft into the lunar south pole on Friday morning in a search for hidden ice. But the big live public splash people anticipated didn't quite happen. Instruments confirm that a large empty rocket hull barrelled into the moon at 7:31 a.m. (1131 GMT), followed four minutes later by a probe with cameras taking pictures of the first crash. Screens got fuzz and no immediate pictures of the crash or the six-mile plume of lunar dust that the mission was all about. The public, which followed the crashes on the Internet and at observatories, seemed puzzled. Several hundred people gathered at the museum "Newseum" in the United States capital to watch a large screen that projected real time images of the event. NASA officials touted loads of data from the probe and telescopes around the world and in orbit. But most of the photos they showed during a Friday morning press conference were from before the crash. The crash photos and videos were few and showed little more than a fuzzy white flash. Still, NASA scientists were happy. "We have images, we have video, we have graphs with squiggly lines that scientists love. So, we have a little bit of something for everyone. And I can only show you a snap shot here given time restrictions, but there's a lot more that's available," said Jennifer Heldmann, coordinator for NASA's observation campaign. Expectations by the public for live plume video were probably too high and based on pre-crash animations, some of which were not by NASA, project manager Dan Andrews told The Associated Press Friday morning 80 minutes after impact. Another issue, one NASA thought was a good possibility going into Friday, was that the lighting was bad and work needs to be done on images to make them easier to see, Andrews said. Experts said the images could be essentially "gray against black," he said. "What matters for us is: What is the nature of the stuff that was kicked up going in?" Andrews said. "All nine instruments were working fine and we received good data." Andrews said the science team is pouring through the information - including what are supposed to be good images from ground-based telescopes on Earth - to answer the big question: Is there some form of water under the moon's surface that was dislodged? It will probably be two weeks before scientists will be certain about the answer, he said. Before the crash, mission scientists said there was a chance that if it was really moist under the crater, they'd know about water within an hour. That's not the case now, Andrews said. The first and much bigger crash was supposed to hit with the force of 1.5 tons of TNT into crater Cabeus and create a mini-crater about half the size of an Olympic pool. The second crash was to be about one-third as strong. The idea is to confirm the theory that water - a key resource if people are going to go back to the moon - is hidden below the barren moonscape. The images were to come from the probe itself. The probe is LCROSS, short for Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite and pronounced L-Cross. It had five cameras and four other pieces of equipment to look for ice or any form of water as it dove through the dust storm created by the empty hull.
Senator Charles Schumer on Time Warner / ABC
Schumer Presser RS 10 May 2, 2000 12:03:42 schumer to podium 12:03:46 talking about the dispute between disney abc and time warner. 12:03:56 in a negotiation that involves billions of dollars and two companies there is nothing unnusual about rhetoric and cheap tactics. Bystandards have been dragged into the crossf ire 12:04:27 1 have an offer for both. I'm sending a letter to both companies that they keep this battle from hurting viewers. During negotiations abc disney will provide abc content to time warner and time warner will air it no matter what the cost. 12:05:14 I'm asking time warner to reinstate and not remove at a later date, ABC. Let me make a couple of comments 12:05:41 f irst when we passed the cable act it was never the intention of congress that viewers would be denied access to broadcast television 12:06:04 it is wrong to use consumers as pawns in a multi billion dollar game of chess. They should agree to the pledge and get abc back on the air for three and a half million viewers who are denied access 12:06:42 1 will be calling today to seek ways to fix this quickly. it is wrong that viewers are left with a black eye 12:07:03 federal action is a last resort. I hope it isn't the only resort. I think the quickest way to deal with a private suit is to agree to keep the consumer out of the cross f ire. Their initial reaction ranged f rom not negative to positive 12:07:44 I'd rather the fcc not get involved and the two companies take this pledge and resolve the dispute between them the way companies do. consumers should not be caught in the middle. They shouldn't use consumers as pawns. 12:08:19 disney is pulling on one hand and time warner is pulling on the other hand. This will be a test to see if the companies truly have the consumers at heart. 12:08:51 I'm not siding with, these are complicated issues, they involve changing aspects of communications. Elected officials should not come down on the sides. My job is to protect the viewers 12:09:22 each side is looking for leverage. Disney extended the agreement until may 25. 1 want them to take a permanent pledge. We're going to solve this dispute without putting the viewers in the middle 12:10:09 I'm a time warner cable person but it hasn't effected our home. our daughters wanted to watch celebrity millionare. We just switched the tv from channel three to channel seven. You could get it with a little fuzz. 12:11:00 schumer departs podium

RUSSIA: 2 BODIES FOUND AFTER FIRE IN OSTANKINO TOWER
TAPE_NUMBER: EF00/0965 IN_TIME: 18:38:24 // 19:08:49 LENGTH: 03:15 SOURCES: All APTN except shots 14-16 = RUSSIAN POOL RESTRICTIONS: FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: Russian/Nat XFA Russian firefighters have recovered two bodies in a blaze that gutted Moscow's giant television tower. The bodies of a high-ranking firefighter and an elevator operator were found in the elevator shaft. The fire knocked out most television services in the Russian capital. Concern was rising that some parts of the landmark tower could fall, particularly the upper reaches of its thin spire. The smoke has now disappeared from Russia's latest tragedy - a fire in Moscow's massive Ostankino Broadcasting tower. Firefighters said temporary fire walls of asbestos placed 70 metres up the tower had stopped the fire - caused by a simple short circuit - from spreading. The authorities say there's little chance the three people stuck in an elevator high up in the tower can be saved because the lift is too high for rescuers to reach. They also believe the two civilians and one firefighter may have been overcome by smoke. Bundles of steel support cables running up the middle of the tower have been damaged, weakening the tower. Officials also said the automatic fire fighting systems within the tower appeared to have failed. The fire, which broke out on the tower's upper spire on Sunday afternoon, cut broadcasts for most major television stations in Moscow. That scared some who were watching the fate of the tower unfold from the streets below it. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "At first, no one really took is seriously, but it really is a tragic event. I mean, a coup could take place and we wouldn't know about it." SUPER CAPTION: Alexei, Muscovite More than 300 firefighters and other emergency workers were called in to battle the blaze, along with fire trucks and other equipment. It is the latest in a series of disasters, including gas explosions, industrial accidents and breakdowns in the power grid which suggest Russia's infrastructure in crumbling. Moscow's Mayor has tried to calm Muscovites telling them the threat of the building toppling over is almost non-existent. But the tower's upper spire has tilted slightly, and the tip of the structure is off centre by about two meters according to a city surveyor. Russia's media minister said he was worried that the monopoly the independent N-T-V channel now had as the only channel that remained on air. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Of course, it worries me that NTV is now at an advantage because nobody knows how it will be used. Today, I have watched a lot of NTV news and they are not being objective. I think that NTV news are now using the situation to their advantage and causing panic." SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Lesin, Media Minister Muscovites are in shock, since their favourite information source is not working. The majority of people in Moscow rely on the television to find out what is going on in the country and worldwide. At a government meeting called to discuss the fire on Monday, President Vladimir Putin said that only economic development would allow Russia to avoid such calamities in the future. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Behind these large scale problems that the country is living with, we shouldn't forget about ongoing economics. How we work on this important sphere of life will determine if such accidents will happen in the future. We have to systematically work on all the spheres. We shouldn't forget anything especially when it comers to economics." SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Putin, Russian President The Ostankino tower - which is now the world's second tallest free standing building - was erected in 1967. As part of Russian-American cold war rivalry it surpassed the Empire State Building as the world's tallest structure when it was built, and held the title until 1975 when it was surpassed by the CN tower in Toronto. STORYLINE: Cats and their owners arrived at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Wednesday ahead of the two-day Cat Fanciers' Association show. In all 41 breeds of cat will be represented at the show on Friday. Cat owners will be primping and spraying the felines, giving them countless treats in exchange for stunts and poses, and fierce competition in six different rings. The breed ribbons and "best in show" categories are the most coveted prizes. "It's a beauty contest, after all, and you want to present the cat to it's, just it's max. The way that it looks the best. And when that judge turns around, their eye definitely goes to your cat because it's presented so beautifully," explained Pam DelaBar, president of the association. One of the cats being prepared for the show was a Russian Blue from Long Island. "He thinks he's the best and he is, he really is. He thinks he's the best above his brothers and sisters, okay? And the only one he looks up to is his father," explained Helene Schneider-Hester. "Another thing is, he'll give you a guilt trip in two second flat if he doesn't get what he wants. Russians are very smart, exceptionally smart," she added. Teri Thorsteinson, from Virginia, doesn't have to worry about brushing her Sphynx cat. Instead of fur it has peach fuzz, she said. But he needs a bath twice a week. "People think that because these cats don't have any fur that their grooming requirements would be real minimal, but because they don't have any fur, the natural skin oils that make a coat of a regular cat soft and glossy and shiny, they make these cats greasy. They sweat. They start smelling," she explained. One of the highlights of the show is the Feline Agility Competition where cats are coaxed and cajoled over jumps and through tunnels. Hundreds of cats seeking adoption will also be on hand on Friday and Saturday. Keyword animals wacky

TAPE_NUMBER: EF00/1206 IN_TIME: 20:30:44 - 21:33:51 LENGTH: 03:07 SOURCES: All ABC except shots 5-6 = APTN RESTRICTIONS: FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat XFA With just eleven days to go before American voters hit the polls, both presidential candidates are out hoping to woo swing voters. Texas Governor George W. Bush spent the day in the battleground state of Michigan, while Vice President Al Gore made stops in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. With the presidential race in a dead heat, Republican George W. Bush hit the battleground state of Michigan on Friday, hoping to fire up supporters and win over swing voters in the process. Speaking at a High School in Kalamazoo, he stepped up attacks on his opponent, claiming he supports a bigger and more intrusive federal government and spending programmes that would bust the budget. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The Vice President's targeted tax cuts for the middle classes provides this family not one dime of tax relief. And that is the fundamental difference folks. You see he wants to spend the couples money in Washington and we want the couple to have their own money to spend. He trusts the government we trust the people. He trusts the federal government, we trust you to make the right decision about what to do with your money." SUPER CAPTION: Texas Governor George W. Bush With just eleven days to go, Bush is being helped in his attacks. A mysterious group is also taking aim at Gore, with T-V ads that recall the famous "Daisy" commercial used by President Johnson in 1964 to suggest his opponent might get the nation into a nuclear war. The new advert accuses President Clinton and Gore of giving away nuclear technology to China in exchange for campaign contributions. UPSOUND: (English) "Now under eight years of Clinton/Gore our security has been sold to communist red China in exchange for campaign contributions. If Clinton/Gore are capable of selling our children's security what else are they capable of. Can we take that chance?" SUPER CAPTION: Advertisement Another Republican group began airing pro-Ralph Nader advertisements in states where the Green Party candidate threatens to hurt Al Gore. UPSOUND: (Pro-Nader Ad) "So what's Al Gore's real record? Eight years of principles betrayed and promises broken. Ask Al Gore Why?" At an event in another battleground state - West Virginia - Gore criticized Republicans for what he says are misleading adverts, calling them a desperate tactic to help his opponent. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The other side won't say it to you plainly that they are in it to fight for their special interests, of course not. They fuzz it up like the maths. They try to use all of the special interest contributions to put misleading advertisements on the TV screens to try to make you think that up is down and black is white and outside is inside." SUPER CAPTION: US Vice President Al Gore Later, in Pennsylvania, Gore told Pittsburgh voters that the country won't be dragged back to the days of runaway spending and tax breaks for the rich. Gore also said he's proposing a major tax credit to help fund technology research. SOUNDBITE: (English) Today I am proposing an expansion of tax credits for research and experimentation to the largest level ever. An idea championed by Joe Lieberman in the US senate. Let's make the tax credit for research permanent for the very first time so businesses can count on long term help as they invest and explore. Not just go a year or so at a time into the future." SUPER CAPTION: US Vice President Al Gore President Clinton is expected to hit the campaign trail next week, but the White House says he won't be making any appearances with the Vice President. trade agreements, like Australia and Singapore 13:36:56 taken on tough task for younger generations to come 13:37:04 some listening closely to debate.2 pts on social security 13:37:15 for those in DC who say no problem: look at facts, don't have enough people to pay into the system for baby boomers, more people receiving benefits over time, those will live longer 13:37:41 this say we've got a problem, a funding problem, fed government has to come up with the money, problem gets worse and worse in 13 yrs.system 13:38:37 longer wait harder to fix problem 13:38:50 if you are near retirement there is enough money, you're in good shape 13:39:01 that's not going to happen, don't care what mailing say you're in good shape, younger workers should be asking what are you going to do to find the problems 13:39:20 and I'm convinced by setting aside partisan politics 13:39:41 were her to talk about class action lawsuit abuse and we've got experts to understand lawsuits 13:39:58 Rep and dem members of the senate working on.call to them is to listen, abut to hear from you. 13:40:20 two people studied the issue, it is important for the country and economy to have a fair answer to this problem 13:40:36 problem is people file suits in a state courthouse, affecting people in other states, often people are unaware if they are getting drug into it 13:40:55 people the lawyers get a lot 13:41:00 so we work with congress to come up with a solution, and it says 13:41:08 my call to the senate is to get the bill done ASAP.and pass the bill on the floor without amendment, pass a clean bill, one that makes sense for American people 13:41:36 asked Walter Delenger to come, University, he was telling me today 13:41:56 I was raised in Texas and the fellow who lived across the street was the baby dr for my brothers 13:42:22 Dr: Mr President, the problem for the economy for 0 yrs, excessive litigation, it's a very large problem 13:42:48 have to get your arms around this problem, can predict what liability, less certainly in the legal system 13:43:07 consumers pay a higher price, priced too high, costs us jobs, no access to the products that they need.need a rule of law, particular problem 13:43:32 rises out of class action, are a valuable devise, need to hold people accountable when their negligence causes injury, need to compensate victims that 13:43:57 Class action started when were there were many people who had same small problem.. 13:44:15 common questions of law, solve whole dispute in one action. 13:44:30 what happened is that these cases kept out to federal courts, even though have real nation implication, multi-state 13:44:52 most state courts run themselves well.few instances where these cases wind up 13:45:07 why do you need a national solution, answer is that all these cases will gravitate, will go where they know the problem is 13:45:27 these are cases, fed courts designed at const. convention 13:45:51 Bush: class action lawsuit, business in states, sued in other court? 13:47:01 understand why remedy is more fair to them, want 13:47:59 Dr: can make decisions, about how that can happen, fed courts more limited, smaller #'s, not one state make laws for the rest of the country.designed to make it 13:48:38 one of the things the framer did, sell products wouldn't get hometown justice 13:48:51 bush: reasonable proposal, why is this fair? Fair b/c 13:49:13 Dr: it allows cases to see under the standards we develop..get into fed court, harmful amendments, he def courts look sat multiple states and say can we fairly try this? 13:49:47 if not then single state, and Penn can't do it from multiple states id you can pick law in one state, or not.hear some telling examples of what's gone wrong when one state makes law for whole country 13:50:24 and we don't get to vote about what happens at other places, a modest measure, moves to the court, system of people getting fair, still class action, used 13:50:47 Bush: Mentioned that they are trying to amend the bill, some trying to weaken the bill, make it not affective, that's why I called for a clean bill. Confident senate will hear that call 13:51:13 move to the house, work together, this is a bill co-sponsors with Rep and Dem. 13:51:32 Commissar 13:51:40 Bush: unusual connection, seems as if you're involved with the law 13:51:51 yes indeed, my job, as state official, in my jurisdiction, to take those by insurance and they are worried about that. 13:52:11 Its difficult to do when too have jurisdiction and ruling that affect my people, one example in New Mexico for separate cases file.violation of fair dealing and charging a small fee for life insurance, policy 13:52:48 premium for that 13:52:56 charge made each of these cases the cost was too high but that the failure to state is a violation of fair game, now I know that the annual percentage rate, there's no loan here 13:53:23 Bush: settle for threat of loss, kinda like a lottery 13:53:41 commissioner: class members all over US, second one settled for 10 million dollars 13:53:59 Bush: slowly but surely filed 13:54:09 Commissioner: 100 off your life insurance you buy from that company, total payout is 40 million dollars and nothing gone to trial, that's the real evil 13:54:35 misleading 13:54:39 Bush: saying that he's doing his job and yet a lawsuit that affects people in DC affects people 13:54:55 commissioner: yes, case in LA Superior Ct,. claiming that company has too much reserves, should give back. What I do is that people who sell insurance have enough reserves 13:55:23 overturned by decision 13:55:30 Bush: Interesting situation, goes back to what Walter talked about.how a fair system ought to work. If I was out there, when the founding fathers talked about decision, we've also got with us Alita. 13:56:24 Got mom up here on stage. 13:56:30 Alita: Long Island, NY 13:56:39 Bush: not everyone know where Qamack is..of course I did. 13:56:51 Alita: First I never believe I would talk to you about my TV set. 13:57:09 Bush: prove that it actually happened 13:57:17 Alita: RCA, back in 1995, almost 2 months later the TV went out..it didn't work, black lines, and fuzz, called company and asked what went on 13:57:43 they said we had to call the cable company.the runaround, we ran a few miles 13:57:57 the company would not say yes, went back and for 2 yrs..progressive tv getting worse 13:58:11 now it's once every day, got to the pt that I said it is the TV 13:58:24 I said how can I get it repaired, and she said you didn't know about the warrantee on the internet, missed it b/c now we're in a lawsuit 13:58:49 got a notice, class action lawsuit, $50 off a brand new tv is participated, last thing I wanted to do was purchase this after it had been that to me 13:59:16 Bush: someone sent you a coupon saying you were part of the lawsuit, glad I wasn't 13:59:40 Alita: why would I want to, knew there was a problem.I was so angry, 14:00:23 Bush; a just society is one that she buys tv, warntee, protection should reward 14:00:39 Alita: consumer of product sent out an ID card 14:00:58 rebate to buy a new tv from them, well as I said Pres, I found out the lawyer who took the case, in Illinois 14:01:19 Bush: More lawsuits in Madison Country, Illinois, that any where else, people filing suits there all the time. 14:01:39 Alita: Lawyer got 22 million dollars, I'm still left with a broken tv, where is the justice in this? 14:02:03 Bush: we're all here b/c we want the system to be fair, economy depends on fair legal system, peoples faith in the system and what we're highlighting here is that the system isn't fair 14:02:32 fair solution that will treat people with respect, and hold people to account without affecting our capacity for our economy.fairness is all we ask for 14:02:55 justice need to be balanced, good people need t help balance those 14:03:04 good senators and congressmen to know that we seek balance 14:03:13 time for congress to do their duty to make our country as good and balanced 14:03:26 honored, that they would explain he need for this in our country 14:03:47 MS Bush shakes hands with panelists
