Young girls look at magazines and want to see a reflection of themselves and that will tell them that they exist, and that they are beautiful. So we need Asians, we need black, we need Latin, we need every, every culture represented in fashion to show that young girl that she matters, that she exists, and that she is beautiful."

TYRA BANKS CELEBRATES BLACK MODELS
Talk show host Tyra Banks transformed a New York City street into a fashion runway on Tuesday (12 Aug.) to celebrate the first ever all-black-model issue of Vogue Italia and the achievements of black models.
Former supermodel Beverly Johnson, who was the first African-American model to appear on the cover of Vogue, hoped that her accomplishment "opened up the floodgates for people to respect different cultures and also respect our beauty in each culture."
Hundreds of audience members watched on as past, present, and future black models joined Banks to recognize the importance of having women of color in the fashion industry.
"Young girls look at magazines and want to see a reflection of themselves and that will tell them that they exist, and that they are beautiful," said Banks. "So we need Asians, we need black, we need Latin, we need every culture represented in fashion to show that young girl that she matters, that she exists, and that she is beautiful."
Over the past few decades, racial barriers in the modeling industry have been gradually breaking down. Yet only a handful of African-American women, such as Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell, have earned 'supermodel' status.
Model Selita Ebanks had this advice for aspiring models: "Always stay professional, persistent, and consistent, and there's nothing that you can't achieve or accomplish. Whether you're black, crème, purple, blue, or yellow, it doesn't matter."
The taped event is to be aired as a segment of the "The Tyra Banks Show" in the US on 11 Sept., 2008.
The new season of the Emmy-Award winning show premieres on 8 Sept.
