TAPE: EF02/0488 IN_TIME: 14:15:24 DURATION: 4:13 SOURCES: APTN/MGM RESTRICTIONS: No re-use/re-sale of film clips without clearance DATELINE: New York. June 6, 2002 SHOTLIST 1. Pullout ext theater 2. WS Red Carpet with Nicolas Cage in foreground 3. SOT (English) Adam Beach: "I think it's a story that needs to be told. It's something that a lot of people don't know about. The codetalkers were a very valuable asset to helping speed the war, but also saving a lot of lives." 4. Film clip - 'Windtalkers' 5. B-roll real Navajo marines that were portrayed in the film saluting for photo opp 6. SOT (English) Albert Smith: "September 11th pulled it a little more together and its ripe enough now. It would have been taken a lot for granted if it was done immediately after the war. But now, the Americans are more mature there is a little more sincerity about the film and the meaning of it." 7. Film clip - 'Windtalkers' 8. Set up Nicolas Cage 9. SOT (English) Nicolas Cage: "Well unlike some of the war battle pictures of the 70s which were sort of anti-heroic, this movie does have a very patriotic feel to it and it's more of a return to a 40's type of war film." 10. Film clip - 'Windtalkers' 11.SOT Christian Slater: "As I opened the script and turned the pages it was just a real history lesson. I didn't know anything about this chapter, I didn't know the influence the Navaho Indians had on helping to win the war so I just really thought it was a great story to be part of." 12. BTS footage with John Woo on the set 13. SOT (English) Nicolas Cage: "I feel very liberated when I work with John that I can go places stylistically that other directors may or may not be receptive to." 14. BTS footage 15. SOT (English) John Woo: "In this film since it was based on a true story, so everything had to look real and horrified so the action I intend to make it pretty much like a documentary and make the audience feel more involved, make the audience feel inside a battle so it was pretty difficult." 16. WS Left to Right Christian Slater, Adam Beach Nicolas Cage and Mark SLATER AND CAGE TALKING IN CODE NICOLAS CAGE, CHRISTIAN SLATER and director JOHN WOO came out for the rainy premiere of their new battlefield drama 'Windtalkers'. The film depicts one of the turning points in World War II when the United States recruited several hundred Navajo Americans as Marines and trained them to use secret military code based on their native language. Those marines were called code talkers. Their code was ultimately the only one never broken by the Japanese and considered to the be the key in winning the war. During the Battle of Saipan, Marines Joe Enders (Nic Cage) and Ox Anderson (Christian Slater) are assigned to protect code talkers Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach)and Charlie Whitehorse (Roger Willie). Their orders are to keep the men safe but if a "code talker" should fall into enemy hands they're to protect the code at all costs. As the men reluctantly become friends and the bonds of war are forged, each man is faced with a terrible decision. John Woo sent Cage and Slater to Boot Camp, to make sure they were tough enough to make convincing soldiers as well as drafting in real American army soldiers to appear in the film. The pair were subjected to weeks of gruelling training to make sure they were ready for their roles and Woo also insisted they performed most of their own stunts. LL Cool J also popped in for the premiere and sounded off to APTN about the latest R&B scandal involving R. Kelly. LL told APTN that he had R. Kelly and the rest of the people involved in the allegations in his prayers and said that R.Kelly is innocent until proven guilty. 'Windtalkers' is released in the US on 14th June.

THIS WEEK, CONGRESS IS SET TO VOTE ON AWARDING THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL TO A GROUP OF HEROES WHO HELPED WIN WORLD WAR TWO.
THE O-S-S, OR "OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES"... WAS A SECRET INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WHO MADE DARING MISSIONS, FOUGHT NAZIS, AND CONDUCTED ESPIONAGE TO GET KEY INFORMATION.
JAKE TAPPER HAS THEIR STORY...
 --REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
NATS:
When you get your haircut, make sure its enemy area style, the hands must look as if they"ve done the work, every scar must conform to your cover story.
THESE WORLD WAR TWO TRAINING FILMS COULD BE TAKEN RIGHT FROM A SPY THRILLER
NATS:
The identity of the recruits is a carefully guarded secret which explains the use of masks in this film.
…BUT THE DANGEROUS MISSIONS AND SECRECY OF THE MILITARY INTELLIGENCE AGENCY THEY WERE MADE FOR WERE ALL TOO REAL
THE OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES, OR THE OSS WAS THE 1940S PRECURSOR TO THE MODERN CIA, THE NAVY SEALS AND U.S. SPECIAL FORCES COMMAND.
ITS MEMBERS WERE TASKED WITH SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND COVERT ASSIGNMENTS IN THE WAR
Capt. John Billings/ Office of Strategic Services, Ret.:
"We weren"t even supposed to mention that we were with OSS, the less people that know the safer it is for all of us. I was a good boy. I didn"t talk about it to anybody."
NOW MORE THAN SEVEN DECADES LATER, WITH THE HELP OF THE OSS SOCIETY, LEGISLATION FINALLY MIGHT PASS TO RECOGNIZE MEMBERS OF THE OSS, SUCH AS CAPTAIN JOHN BILLINGS WITH A CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL - THE HIGHEST CIVILIAN HONOR.
Capt. John Billings/ Office of Strategic Services, Ret.:
"To me it means that at least somebody thinks we did a good job."
BILLINGS HAD ALREADY FLOWN COUNTLESS BOMBING MISSIONS FOR THE U.S. ARMY DURING WORLD WAR TWO WHEN HE WAS RECRUITED TO THE OSS AT AGE 21.
HIS ASSIGNMENT?
TO FLY OPERATIVES AND OTHER AGENTS AND SUPPLIES TO DROP ZONES WITHIN ENEMY TERRITORY -SOME MARKED IN THE SNOW WITH LETTERS SUCH AS THIS ONE.
Capt. John Billings/ Office of Strategic Services, Ret.:
"We weren"t supposed to learn their names. Occasionally we would drop "Joes." Everybody"s name that got on that was not going to come back with us was named Joe. You as a single plane were probably shortening the war much more than hundreds of planes just dropping bombs hoping to hit a factory or something of that sort. The OSS was very powerful and we liked it!"
BILLINGS SAYS PERHAPS HIS MOST DARING MISSION WAS OPERATION GREEN-UP IN 1945.
HE FLEW THREE "JOES" DEEP INTO THE AUSTRIAN ALPS TO PARACHUTE OUT BEHIND ENEMY LINES AND GATHER INFORMATION ON THE NAZIS .
TWO OF THE MEN WERE JEWISH, INCLUDING THE LATE GERMAN-BORN SPY FRED MAYER, A CLOSE FRIEND OF BILLINGS" WHO"S WORK INSPIRED THE FILM INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.
NATS
I NEED ME EIGHT SOLDIERS, EIGHT JEWISH AMERICAN SOLDIERS... WE"RE GOING TO BE DROPPED INTO FRANCE DRESSED AS CIVILIANS.
BILLINGS TELLS CNN THAT THE FILM"S FICTIONAL PORTRAYAL MISSED THE REAL BRAVERY AND APTITUDE OF OSS MEMBERS SUCH AS MAYER.
Capt. John Billings/ Office of Strategic Services, Ret.:
"These people, especially the people who went out of the airplane, they were going into unknown things and they had, especially Fred, they had chutzpah."
THE KIND THAT CONGRESS MAY FINALLY HONOR…THOUGH MUCH TOO LATE FOR FAR TOO MANY OF MEMBERS OF THIS GREATEST GENERATION
Capt. John Billings/ Office of Strategic Services, Ret.:
"I would have liked to have had this medal knowing that he was going to get one too."
 -- SUGGESTED TAG --
THERE ARE ABOUT ONE-HUNDRED SURVIVING O-S-S MEMBERS.
A HANDFUL OF THE SURVIVING VETERANS, MANY OF THEM IN THEIR NINETIES, PLAN TO BE ON HAND FOR THE HOUSE VOTE, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO PASS, AND THEN HEAD TO PRESIDENT OBAMA"S DESK FOR HIS SIGNATURE.

Entertainment Europe / Entertainment Americas: US / Windtalkers feature - John Woo makes WW2 docu-drama
TAPE: EF02/0498 IN_TIME: 14:12:56 / 20:56:57 DURATION: 6:16 SOURCES: APTN/MGM Studios RESTRICTIONS: No re-use/re-sale of film/video/tv clips without clearance DATELINE: Los Angeles, USA. June 2002 SHOTLIST: 1. Clip Trailer - 'Windtalkers' 2. Sot Nicolas Cage (English): "I was kind of alarmed and surprised that I didn't know about the Navajo code talkers, they were such an instrumental part of winning the war and they went from island to island, to island. They didn't get sent back which is also important to know. Only until now were we made aware of this now around the world. It is long overdue but I'm glad it is happening all the same." 3. Clip - 'Windtalkers' 4. Sot John Woo (English): "Beside the history it is all about friendship. It's also all about the two different types of people and how they work together and come together which is like all those kind of cowboy and Indian... that kind of feeling." 5. Clip - 'Windtalkers' 6. Action on location shoot, 'Windtalkers'. 7. Tank on monitor 8. Push into John Woo and Nicholas Cage watching Monitor 9. Sot John Woo (English): "In this film I tried to make it real and convincing and so I tried to behave myself a little bit. In this film I didn't use much of a stylish technique, I tried to be honest, I tried to make it real and so most of the action sequences look like a documentary." 10. Explosions on location shoot, 'Windtalkers'. 11. Nicolas Cage and Adam Beach in action take 12. Sot Nicolas Cage (English): "Sometimes John's shots go on what seems like 5 minutes and there is so much happening, ooof, I just had a little flash back, I'm back on the set. Machine guns going off, big bombs, little bombs, bullets, you would rehearse it and rehearse it all day long and the last two hours of the day you would start photographing the shot and if you blew it, if I missed my mark or another actor blew it you would have to go all the way back to the beginning and reset everything and that could take an hour sometimes or more. So that alone was the most pressure for us I think." 13. On the camera truck during track shot of action 14. Sot Adam Beach (English) : "I could say that I hit the jackpot because now I have become a better actor working with Nicholas, it's like I have gained 10 years experience. And working with John , he has taught me a lot about the camera and also about how to be a good human being." 15. Clip - 'Windtalkers' 16. Sot Roger Willie (English): " With him he really made me feel comfortable on set, and just getting to know him after the film and so forth and just travelling together. A great and incredible person right here. " 17. Christian Slater and Roger Willie rehearse action sequence 18. Sot Christian Slater (English): " I loved working with Roger, it was amazing. I had no idea it was his first time doing a movie, he seemed to be totally natural. And in a way a lot of us relied on him because he had 4 years military experience and we are all little actor guys, and so we counted on him for guidance and just what it was like to be in the military. " 19. Clip, 'Windtalkers' STORYLINE: CAGE AND SLATER PROTECT CODEBREAKING WINDTALKERS IN NEW MOVIE NICOLAS CAGE and CHRISTIAN SLATER star in new battlefield drama 'Windtalkers' from legendary action movie director JOHN WOO ('Broken Arrow', 'Face/Off', 'Mission: Impossible II'). Inspired by true events, the film depicts one of the turning points in World War II when the United States recruited several hundred Navajo Americans as Marines and trained them to use secret military code based on their native language. Those marines were called code talkers. Their code was ultimately the only one never broken by the Japanese and considered to be the key in winning the war. During the Battle of Saipan, Marines Joe Enders (NICOLAS CAGE) and Ox Anderson (CHRISTIAN SLATER) are assigned to protect code talkers, Private Ben Yahzee (ADAM BEACH) and Private Charlie Whitehorse (ROGER WILLIE). Their orders are to keep the men safe but if a "code talker" should fall into enemy hands they're to protect the code at all costs. As the men reluctantly become friends and the bonds of war are forged, each man is faced with a terrible decision. Director Woo tried to achieve gritty realism over a highly stylised look for his latest movie: "In this film I tried to make it real and convincing and so I tried to behave myself a little bit. In this film I didn't use much of a stylish technique, I tried to be honest, I tried to make it real and so most of the action sequences look like a documentary." To add to the authenticity, Woo sent Cage and Slater to Boot Camp, to make sure they were tough enough to make convincing soldiers as well as drafting in real American army soldiers to appear in the film. The pair were subjected to weeks of gruelling training to make sure they were ready for their roles and Woo also insisted they performed most of their own stunts. There was added pressure on the pair to perform on set as Cage reveals: "Sometimes John's shots go on what seems like 5 minutes and there is so much happening, ooof, I just had a little flash back, I'm back on the set. So that alone was the most pressure for us I think." 'Windtalkers' is released in the US on 14th June. FILM CLIP DETAILS Windtalkers MGM 1 310 449 3000
