ANTI-WAR PROTESTS (VIETNAM) - PART ONE

Raw footage of student protests against ROTC at San Francisco State University Student sit in in the hallway of the university presidents office. Student activist speeches on campus. Students marching into the administrative building yelling “ROTC off our campus”. University President Dr. John Summerskill is interviewed by news reporters. He is asked if the students opinions are important to him and if the chancellor and board of trustees could over rule whatever decision he does make. He gives statements claiming he supports the students’ freedom of speech and that he also supports affirmative action and scholarships for minority students. He also gives statements about the need to return to education in the time when man students are busy protesting the Vietnam War. Acting president Hayakawa gives statements about quelling student radical activity (anti vietnam, etc), the bombing on campus, and the AFT strike. About the AFT strike, he assures absent teachers will have their pay docked and/or be fired. He also answers questions about the prospect of a Black Studies/ ethnic studies department potentially headed by Dr. Nathan Hale. Another statement is made about evidence that student groups purchased rifles. On campus picketing march in support of AFT (American Federation of Teachers) is met with police violence (beatings and arrests). A black student is beaten to the ground with night sticks. Summerskill gives statement about minority group teachers. Student leader is interviewed. Picketer is interviewed.

A Vietnamese video store owner who tried to rehang a post of Ho Chi Minh was met by a crowd of one-thousand protesters this morning. The controversy began over a month ago, when Truong Van Tran put the poster and a Communist flag on display at his store. He was forced to take them down but had recently received a court order allowing him to rehang the items. Tran made his way safely to his store today to rehang the posters as police in riot gear kept the protesters at bay. Tran left shortly after. Most of the 200,000 people living in Little Saigon's residential area are former political prisoners or refugees of Vietnam who hate the communist government. The crowd of protesters was made of Vietnamese-Americans and American veterans of the Vietnam War. At least 12 people were arrested.
