Water rising in Kilauea volcano crater, 2020, timelapse
Time lapse footage of a caldera known as Kaluapele on the summit of Kilauea volcano filling with water in 2020, following its collapse in 2018. Calderas are large depressions that can form when volcanoes collapse after erupting. This occurs because magma that structurally supports the top of the volcano is expelled or drains to new vents. The 2018 collapse caused the crater depth to increase form 85m to around 488m, and its diameter to more than double. This new depth brought the caldera base below the water table, allowing it to gradually fill with water. The next time Kilauea erupted, in the same year, the newly forming lake was evaporated in less than 90 minutes. Filmed in Hawaii, USA.
