LIGHTNING STRIKES FLAMING VOLCANO
Primordial Earth
Animation of erupting volcanoes, lava flows and storms on the primordial Earth. During the Archean epoch of the Earth's past, 2.5-4 billion years ago, volcanic activity was much more pronounced, and the atmosphere lacked oxygen and was much richer in greenhouse gases. This kept the surface warm enough for some liquid water, despite the Sun only emitting some 70% of its current energy output. Despite these hellish conditions, life began on Earth during the Archean epoch.

Montage of very short scenes and images of Japan, arranged artistically
Artistic montage of seemingly unrelated scenes. Slates in Japanese overlay scenes of explosions with smoke rising from a volcano. This is followed by high winds and severe thunderstorms with lightning and views of ocean crashing against rocks. A steam locomotive rushes across a steel railroad trestle bridge. Glimpse of a ship's funnel and sound of horn blowing in presence of stormy weather. Glimpse of power plant (or other industrial site) near water, with smoke rising from 5 smoke stacks. Ship's funnel and horn shown again in stormy conditions. Multiple artistic images of a man are overlaid upon each other. Then a momentary view from track level of fast-moving railroad train. A large room filled with enthusiastic young men waving raised hands. View from trackside of speeding locomotive passing close to the camera. The men waving arms, again followed by view of speeding locomotive driving arms and wheels. The men waving their arms are now seen to be inside a room where several men in business suits stand before them. More views of speeding trains interspersed with ocean waters and network of humming electrical communication lines. Panning upward view of a tall smoke stack. Aerial view of narrow isthmus of coastal cliff extending into the sea, accompanied by overlaying slate in Japanese with sounds of strong winds in background. Location: Japan. Date: 1933.

PHILIPPINES: MAYON VOLCANO ERUPTION LATEST (2)
TAPE_NUMBER: EF00/0239 IN_TIME: 04:29:06 - 07:18:20 - 10:22:32 LENGTH: 02:55 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: No Access Philippines/Internet FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat Ash and rock from the Mayon volcano in the Philippines is being fired several metres (yards) into the air as scientists warn that a bigger eruption could be on the way. Thousands of people have been evacuated after the volcano spewed ash up to seven kilometres (miles) high on Monday. Filipino officials are now maintaining an eight-kilometre radius danger zone, fearing more eruptions could threaten thousands more people. In some towns in the Philippines, ash has whitewashed the roads and the little traffic left using them. But so far no casualties have been reported. The Mayon volcano first erupted on Thursday, ejecting lava and molten rocks, some the size of small houses. That forced the authorities to evacuate more than 47-thousand villagers. After a day of relative calm, the volcano spewed lava and ash again on Saturday in several new eruptions. On Sunday, it was quiet with lava oozing slowly from its crater. More dangerous than the slow-moving lava are what are known as pyroclastic flows. They're superheated clouds of ash and other debris that incinerate anything in their path as they travel at 80 kilometres per hour. The local mayor says this is the worst ash fall that his town has experienced. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I noticed that the thickness over the ash fall here is at least two inches and it is already a serious possibility - you cannot say - that's why all cars here are having their lights on so it's really a very hard hit municipality indeed." SUPER CAPTION: Juan Rivera, Mayor of Ginubatan The volcano was again active on Tuesday morning and officials have said there are more and worse eruptions still to come. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We experienced severe ash fall on the south western slopes of the volcano. This reached about 10, 12 or 14 kilometres from the crater. Now this ash fall is composed mainly of very fine fragments of pulverized rocks and so this also caused some of the spectacular lightning discharges that we saw in late afternoon. Now I understand that areas hit by ash fall have been evacuated, although ash fall by itself is more of a nuisance than a life threatening phenomenon." SUPER CAPTION: Ernest Corpus, Vulcanologist Almost 50-thousand people are sheltering in makeshift camps after fleeing their homes. Filipino authorities have appealed for some to return home. They say only those who live within a kilometre of Mayon - about 32-thousand people - should stay in the camps. Some officials have suggested that many people in the evacuation centres were there hoping for free meals. Mayon volcano, which is more than 300 kilometres southeast of Manila, is famous for its conical shape. Since 1616, 47 eruptions have been recorded. Its most violent eruption in 1814 killed more than 1-thousand-200 people and buried an entire town in volcanic mud flows. Cattle in the mist of volcanic ash 9. Various of smoke coming out of Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano STORYLINE: The drifting plume of ash from Chile's erupting volcano forced new cancellations of dozens of flights on Monday in Argentina, Uruguay and other South American countries, even as airlines in Australia began trying to move a backlog of volcano-stranded passengers. Buenos Aires' two main airports reopened on Monday after halting flights for a day due to the cloud of fine grit, which can damage plane engines. The civil aviation agency said the ash in the air had diminished. The cloud has also drifted across the Pacific Ocean, and most flights between Australia and New Zealand remained grounded. All flights were cancelled at the international airport in Montevideo, Uruguay, and some were grounded in Chile, Paraguay and Brazil. Airlines in Australia started flying a backlog of tens of thousands of stranded passengers to and from the city of Melbourne on Monday as ash cleared somewhat after forcing hundreds of cancellations, although Australia's Bureau of Meteorology said the ash cloud was large enough to disrupt flights later in the week. Early on Tuesday, more Australian flights were cancelled because of the ash, this time out of a midsize southern airport. About two dozen flights into and out of Adelaide were cancelled, though Qantas and Jetstar said they would reassess that decision later on Tuesday. Chile's Cordon Caulle volcano began erupting on June 4. Since then, about 4,000 Chileans have been evacuated from the area. Ash began to fall on Monday in some towns of the Ri?inahue Valley in Chile, where residents had been evacuated last week by troops and police. Television images showed roofs and cars coated with ash. Army troops were handing out masks in other nearby areas as a precaution in case the ash cloud drifted toward them, said Enrique Valdivieso, the director of Chile's National Geology and Mines Service. " 19. Anthropologists lifting box containing "wood sceptres" out of the water 20 Close up box containing "lighting bolt sceptres" 21. Mid of anthropologists talking STORYLINE: Archaeologists at a lake in the crater of a snowcapped Mexican volcano say they've found wooden lightning bolts matching the ones that Spanish priests wrote about more than 500 years ago, when they described the offerings made by Aztecs to their rain god Tlaloc. Scuba-diving earlier this month at more than 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) above sea level, the scientists found the lightning bolts, along with cones of copal incense and obsidian knives in one of the twin lakes of the extinct Nevado de Toluca volcano. "Primarily, these offerings are associated with the Aztecs about 500 years ago," said Dr Johan Reinhard, an anthropologist and explorer-in-residence for National Geographic Society, who joined another research dive into the lake on Thursday. Lightning bolt sceptres were "used by Aztec priests when they were doing rites associated with the god Tlaloc," he added. Scientists at Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History must still conduct tests to determine the age of the findings, but say the wooden bolts could have survived for centuries in the frigid lake west of Mexico City, and fit the description of Aztec rituals at the volcano that priests wrote about in the early 1500s during the Spanish conquest. Copal incense was burned to form "clouds," and sharp spines from the maguey cactus, which doesn't grow at that altitude, suggest worshippers carried them up the mountain to draw blood from themselves as part of the offerings. Luis Alberto Martos, the institute's director of archaeological studies, said other artifacts found in the lake indicate the ritual may have started about 100 BC, long before the Aztecs settled in the area in 1325.
