He praised the heroism of Soviet citizens, saying the Soviet war effort had liberated Europe from Nazi Germany. On Monday more than 50 world leaders will be in Moscow for commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, an event that will pay tribute to the huge human sacrifice paid by the Soviet Union. Almost 27 million Soviet citizens, soldiers and civilians, died in the war. "Our people defended not only their Motherland but also freed 11 European countries. On the fields of battles from the Barents Sea to the Caucasus the military machine of Nazism was broken," the Russian leader said. Because of the 1939 non-aggression pact with Hitler, the Soviet Union didn't come into the war until 1941, nearly two years after it began with the German invasion of Poland. Once involved, the Soviet Union suffered the most casualties and the Red Army fought most of the epic battles that turned its tide Stalingrad, Kursk, and the battle of Berlin that sealed Hitler's doom. The new monument, unveiled by Putin and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov on Poklonnaya Hill, honours the heroism of Soviet Red Army soldiers, officers, sailors, partisans and workers behind the front. It features 15 giant bronze columns, including 10 columns dedicated to Red Army fronts, which stand in the order of how representatives of those fronts marched at the Victory parade in 1945, three columns to Soviet fleets, one to partisans, and one to workers behind the front. Each of the columns, which are similar to each other, is wrapped by a glory wreath at the bottom and topped with bronze Red Army flags. They all stand in one row along the territory of Poklonnaya Hill.
55724 OFFICIAL FILMS NEWS THRILLS OF 1942 VOL. 4 OPERATION TORCH NORTH AFRICA RUSSIAN FRONT
This film from 1942 depicts parts of the North Africa Campaign of WW2, as well as from the Allied forces' advance on New Guinea. It is presented by Official Films (:12) and opens with a promotion to buy more war bonds. (The US Treasury Department pushed for citizens to buy more bonds in order to finance WW2.) (:22). US forces are seen heading into Higgins boats for the landing on North Africa (:31) and British and US invasion fleets moved towards Africa from the British Isles (:49). This was the largest amphibious force in military history up to that time consisting of 850 ships (1:03). As the armada was about to hit the Strait of Gibraltar, a message from a Royal Navy destroyer (1:21) dictated the unit was to land on the Algerian coast west of Oran (1:30). Troops touching down on the shoreline completed the mission and quickly flanked Oran (1:07). The Allied powers now had control of the majority of the Mediterranean coast of Africa and headed towards Tunisia (2:00).

In the summer of 1942, the Russian army moved in on the River Don to join Allied fighting forces (2:24). Soviet Infantrymen are seen rescuing their wounded under fire (3:11) as well as Russian snipers picking off Germans (3:29). The Red Army resistance made the defense of Stalingrad possible (3:43).

For the advance on New Guinea, Allied forces moved in against Nippon armies (3:52). An aerial shot of the Owen Stanley Mountain range follows, which is where the Australian forces, under command of Douglas MacArthur and General Sir Thomas Blaney, were fighting Japanese forces at (4:00). Allied forces were able to push the Japanese from their main base of Kokoda (4:36). Australian forces are seen moving up through the jungle and breaking out into combat (5:19). New Guinea was the Australians first line of defense as it was only 100 miles across the water from Australia (6:07). New Guinea, once captured would become part of a vital anchor including the Solomon Islands guarding Australian and UN supply lines (6:12) and all of the UN’s fighting forces took part in this movement to rout the Japanese from the South Pacific.

British Airmen targeted German positions in Libya (6:37) and the 8th Army’s mechanized units consisting of swift gun armored cars and modern tanks are seen moving forward as Nazi’s retreat (7:03). The British advance covered ground at a rapid rate of 35 miles daily (7:38) as they closed in on General Erwin Rommel and his forces (7:38).

The final section of the film shows an unnamed American aircraft carrier USS Yorktown getting hit in the Battle of the Coral Sea (8:01). Gunners aboard the ship are seen targeting flying Japanese fighters (8:09). A blow hits the stern of the craft opening a wide hole (8:50). Troops worked to patch the hole and continue fighting simultaneously (9:22).

The film concludes with a final war bond promotion (9:32) "Hang the Axis" showing a drawing of the leaders of the Axis powers -- Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini -- being hanged at a gallows.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! Moscow street with holiday decorations STORYLINE: Security was stepped up in the Russian capital Moscow on Saturday ahead of the arrival of more than 50 world leaders for the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The world leaders, including US president George W. Bush, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, will fly in to Moscow this weekend to watch a parade by thousands of veterans in Red Square, before laying wreaths at Moscow's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall. They will then attend a reception in the Kremlin hosted by the Russian president Vladimir Putin. Twenty eight - thousand specially-trained forces have been brought in to complement Moscow's police force, amid fears of terrorist attacks by Chechen separatists, who have chosen 9 May as a date for attacks in previous years. Chechnya's pro-Russian president, Akhmad Kadyrov, was killed in an explosion in the republic's capital, Grozny, on Victory Day 2004. The area within Moscow's inner ring road, or Boulevard Ring, is expected to be closed to vehicles, while a ring around the Kremlin and Red Square will be accessible only to those with security passes. Roads to Moscow's three airports will be closed to traffic and anti-aircraft batteries have been ordered to fire at any aircraft violating a no-fly zone over the city. One tourist said the additional security made him feel very secure in Moscow but a local citizen said while he understood the importance of extra security measures the road blocks were an imposition. The movement of private ambulances was restricted earlier this week after security authorities said they had received information that terrorists were planning attacks using ambulances. Tensions were raised on Thursday when Russia said it had thwarted a plan by Chechen rebels to attack towns in the northern Caucasus with poison and explosives. The Federal Security Service said it had discovered an arms cache containing a cyanide-based substance on the borders of Chechnya during military operations.
