German flying boat Dornier Do-X arrives in New York at the end of its journey. Plane glides in the sky over the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge. Several small planes accompany it during the flight. It circles the Statue of Liberty and lands in the bay. Spectators on several boats observe it. 2 x 16mm reels (A / B). BW. This colorful adventure-drama stars Lon Chaney as Joe Bethel, a struggling deep-sea sponge fisherman who has been saving his pennies to purchase a boat. He is sweet on Rosita, a young bathing beauty; their common nemesis is Savanis, a sleazy, avaricious moneylender, who holds the notes on her weak-willed fathers coffee shop. Savanis promises to tear them up if Rosita will wed him, but she will have nothing to do with his scheme. This conniver sports a well-earned reputation for always getting what he goes after. He lends Joe the loot for the boat - which he promptly attempts to sabotage. However, Savanis doesn?t realize the extent to which Joe is hardworking and determined to succeed - and Rosita is loyal to her man. Chaney, son of the ""Man of a Thousand Faces,"" changed his name to Lon Chaney, Jr. in 1935. He is appropriately rugged as the fisherman, while Sally looks great in her skimpy bathing suits. This short silent film shows the Dornier Do X, the largest, heaviest, and most powerful flying boat in the world when it was produced by the Dornier company of Germany in 1929. First conceived by Dr. Claudius Dornier in 1924, planning started in late 1925 and after over 240,000 work hours it was completed in June 1929.<p><p>During the years between the two World Wars, only the Russian Tupolev ANT-20 Maxim Gorki landplane of a few years later was physically larger, but at 53 metric tons maximum takeoff weight it was not as heavy as the Do X's 56 tonnes.<p><p>The Do X was financed by the German Transport Ministry and in order to circumvent conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, which forbade any aircraft exceeding set speed and range limits to be built by Germany after World War I, a specially designed plant was built at Altenrhein, on the Swiss portion of Lake Constance.
