Composite Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) imagery of the Sun emitting a powerful solar flare on 14th December 2023. The flare (red burst, upper right) was classified as X2.8, making it the strongest flare since September 2017. Flares are huge eruptions of radiation from active regions on the Sun's surface. This clip is a composite of imagery taken by the AIA instrument at three separate wavelengths: 335 Angstroms (green), 193 Angstroms (blue) and 93 Angstroms (red). The lower the wavelength the higher the energy. Images captured between 13th-15th December 2023.

Timelapse footage of activity in the Sun's chromosphere a few minutes after the release of an X1 solar flare from the active region AR2994. Solar flares are dense clouds of plasma, or ionised gas, in the Sun's outer layer, the corona. Upon erupting, the flares become part of the solar wind. They may be associated with strong magnetic activity inside the Sun, and some flares are powerful enough that, on reaching Earth, they can disrupt telecommunications and satellite systems. Solar flares can extend hundreds of thousands of kilometres into space. X class solar flares are the most intense. Captured on 30th April 2022 from Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, Portugal.
