88984 " A DAY IN VIETNAM " 1967 U.S. MARINE CORPS & VIETNAM ANTI-WAR PROTESTS FILM 1967
Featuring images of combat in Vietnam intercut with war protestors picketing the White House, A DAY IN VIETNAM dates to 1967 and is narrated by Jack Webb. This film was designed to provide an empathetic view of the American military's role and sacrifices in Vietnam, focusing on the perspective and humanity of the soldiers rather than the political or strategic debate surrounding the conflict. It shows USMC and Army activities in Vietnam, including jungle fighting against the Viet Cong, use of helicopters in the field, interrogation of V.C. (6:40), air strikes from carrier based planes (13:00) in the Gulf of Tonkin including Skyhawks, and Marine F-4 Phantoms (19:30) operating from air bases inland for close air support, evacuation of wounded, and more. "The what and the how of our military operations."

In the finale, Jack Webb's trademark deadpan voice is used effectively to narrate this period piece. In the finale, we discover one soldier's true motive for fighting in jungles so far from home:

"These men prove everyday they understand the why of Vietnam. Listen to a few letters written home by these young men, some of whom have since been killed: 'Its a lousy war - as is any war...But I'd rather be here than in Minnesota'".

00:00:
The film begins with a reflection on the irony of young American men fighting in Vietnam while others back home advocate for withdrawal. It suggests that those who oppose the war might not understand its purpose, as highlighted by a quote from a battle-weary Marine. The narrator Jack Webb clarifies that the purpose of this "trip" is not to explain the "why" of the Vietnam War but to show the "what" and "how" of military operations, focusing on giving insight into how the war is being fought.
1:36: A briefing by a military operations officer describes the geographical and strategic context of the war, detailing the division of South Vietnam into four core areas, focusing on the I Corps area where the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force operates. Key operational bases like Danang, Chu Lai, and Hue-Phu Bai are mentioned.
4:02: The narrative shifts to show the daily life and challenges faced by Marines, including combat scenarios, the harsh environment, and dealing with guerrilla warfare tactics like booby traps and mines. It also highlights the care for weapons before personal comfort, emphasizing the professional life of a Marine.
7:33 : Combat operations, including an artillery strike to dislodge entrenched Viet Cong, and the interaction with Vietnamese civilians. It discusses the struggle to win hearts and minds, showing the establishment of combined action companies for village security and the rebuilding efforts through civic action programs.
11:09: The focus moves to the role of the U.S. Navy, particularly in riverine and coastal operations to block Viet Cong supply lines. It describes operations like "Market Time" for coastal surveillance and introduces the vital role of aircraft carriers in naval operations, including their support in air combat sorties over North Vietnam.
14:02: The importance of search and rescue operations for downed pilots, showcasing the teamwork and risk involved. It also covers the amphibious capabilities of the Marine-Navy team, including operations from ships like the LPH (landing platform helicopter).
16:57: A military operation involving both helicopter and beach assaults, demonstrating coordinated efforts to trap and engage the enemy. It then transitions to medical support, discussing the rapid response to injuries and the comprehensive care provided by facilities like the hospital ship USS Repose.
21:06: Discusses the broader health challenges faced by troops, like tropical diseases, and the spiritual support provided by chaplains, who bring comfort and services to the troops in various field conditions.
23:03: Personal reflections from soldiers through letters home are shared, emphasizing their understanding of the war's purpose, personal sacrifices, and patriotism. This segment underscores the maturity and sacrifices of young servicemen.
26:56: The conclusion reflects on the transformation of young American men into mature, gallant fighters, emphasizing their role as the heart of America, and the collective debt owed to them for their service.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. (CBS) Police in southwest suburban Romeoville continued investigating the shooting deaths of four family members.
\n

\n
They were all found dead inside their home Sunday night. CBS 2's Shardaa Gray had the latest on where the investigation stood as of Tuesday.
\n

\n
A small memorial was created outside the home where the family had recently moved into. Police hope someone who lives nearby may have some crucial evidence. They asked neighbors to check their doorbells and surveillance cameras for video that might provide clues.
\n

\n
Romeoville police said they spent the 36 hours after discovering the deaths collecting a "tremendous amount" of physical evidence. Police determined the shootings were not a random incident.
\n

\n
The four victims were Alberto Rolon, 38, Zoraida Bartolomei, 32, and their two sons, ages 7 and 9.
\n

\n
The Valley View School District said the boys attended nearby Robert C. Hill Elementary School in Romeoville. Social workers, psychologists, and counselors were at the school to support students and staff.
\n

\n
The family had recently moved from Westmont, where a neighbor said they had lived for five years. Lisa Maicke, a former neighbor of the family, said it's hard for her to process the gruesome act.
\n

\n
"You can't. You can't when somebody's trying to do better for their family, and this happens," Maicke said. "It's horrible. It's tragic."
\n

\n
At times fighting back tears, Maicke described the victims were "just a really nice young family."
\n

\n
"Really nice kids," she said. "Great neighbors. Always ready to help my husband lift something or take the trash out when we were on vacation, watch for packages. Just really good people."
\n

\n
The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is also investigating the shooting. Police have not released a motive for the crime.
\n

\n
Station Notes/Scripts:
\n

\n
Just a young family trying to do better. I'm sorry.
\n

\n
FIGHTING BACK TEARS. LISA MAICKE REFLECTS ON HER NEIGHBORS WHO PREVIOUSLY LIVED IN WESTMONT.
\n

\n
They were just a really nice young family. They moved in next door after being in the city, they wanted to get their kids in some better schools.
\n

\n
THEY RECENTLY ATTENDED ROBERT C HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ROMEOVILLE. THE VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT SAYS SOCIAL WORKERS, PSYCHOLOGISTS AND COUNSELORS WERE THERE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
\n

\n
"really nice kids, really nice kids, great neighbors, always ready to, you know, help my husband lift something or take the trash out when we were on vacation or watch for packages. Just really good people"
\n

\n
A SMALL MEMORIAL HAS FORMED OUTSIDE OF THIS HOME WHERE THE FAMILY LIVED. POLICE ARE HOPING SOMEONE WHO LIVES UP AND DOWN THIS STREET HAS CRUCIAL EVIDENCE. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS THEY'VE SPENT THE LAST 36 HOURS COLLECTING A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. THEY WERE ABLE TO DETERMINE THIS WAS NOT A RANDOM INCIDENT. MAICKE SAYS SHE'S HEARTBROKEN BECAUSE SHE KNOWS THE PARENTS WERE TRYING TO DO BETTER FOR THEIR KIDS.
\n

\n
" It's horrible. It's tragic. It's unfair"
\n

\n
--SUPERS--
\n

\n
--VIDEO SHOWS--
\n

\n
--VO SCRIPT--
\n

\n
--LEAD IN--
\n

\n
--SOT--
\n

\n
--TAG--
\n

\n
--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
\n

\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n
