Peru Zebra - Zebra gives birth to a foal which becomes zoo's main attraction
NAME: PER ZEBRA 20080315I TAPE: EF08/0287 IN_TIME: 10:03:36:06 DURATION: 00:02:57:04 SOURCES: AP TELEVISION DATELINE: Lima, 14 March 2008 RESTRICTIONS: SHOTLIST: 1. Wide of people looking at the zebras in Lima zoo 2. Pan of newly born zebra 3. Close up of zebra foal 4. Wide of zebras 5. Close up shot of mother zebra and foal 6. Various of the zebras 7. Set up of Carlos Parraga, Head of Public Relations at the Lima Zoo 8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carlos Parraga, Head of Public Relations of the Lima Zoo: "Well, we had the birth of a Grevy Zebra which is a species that rarely gives birth in zoos or in captivity but this is the second time this happens at this zoo. This foal was born on March 11, and the previous one was born a year and three months ago. It is in good health and apparently it is a male, though we still haven't been able to examine it more closely. The previous foal was also male. These are Zebras that arrived here in 2003 from the National Zoo of Cuba. In fact it took them a long time to reproduce. The Grant Zebras that are the other kind of zebras that we have here reproduced very quickly but with the Grevy Zebras we thought we were going to have problems. But it seems that since the first pregnancy they became very fertile and they are doing very well." 9. Zoom in from sign to zebra 10. Newly born zebra stumbles and falls 11. Wide of zoo keeper arriving with food 12. Mid of zebra following the zoo keeper 13. Wide shot of Hippopotami 14. Close of Hippo born in the zoo in 2006 STORYLINE Lima's Parque de las Leyendas Zoo has a new attraction. On the 11th of March, the popular Zebra couple, Yoko and John gave birth to a foal. Despite the African Grevy Zebra rarely reproducing in captivity, it is the second time Yoko has had a successful pregnancy. The Zebras arrived from the Cuban National Zoo in March 2003, and have since been followed by a couple of hippopotami in 2006 that have also adapted well and reproduced. "It is in good health and apparently it is a male, though we still haven't been able to examine it more closely," Head of Public Relations of the Lima Zoo Carlos Parraga told AP Television. The examination hasn't been possible yet because the mother Zebra does not allow the vets to approach the foal. While the climate in Peru has helped keep the Zebras healthy, the zoo was less successful recently with other exotic imports, after some camels that had been introduced to the zoo failed to adapt to their new environment and died.
