46284 1944 FORESTRY & LUMBER INDUSTRY DOCUMENTARY "TOMORROW'S TIMBER"
Produced by Vancouver Motion Pictures for Canada’s Department of Mines & Resources, this 1944 educational/public awareness film advocates forest fire prevention while also giving viewers a look at the important role forests play in Canada’s timber economy (and, to a lesser extent, public recreation) and how Canada fights forest fires. The film opens with footage of a ghost town: old wooden buildings are abandoned, some charred from an earlier fire. The film then cuts to a vibrant town with a busy main street. People shop at the stores, a truck hauls lumber, and several people work on building a church. There are several different shots of a lumber mill (01:57). Men saw down a tree and then saw the fallen tree into smaller logs. There are several shots of wildlife, including ducks and deer. A couple enjoys a leisure walk through a forest (02:55); the man lights a cigarette and throws the match on the ground without ensuring its flame is completely out. Footage shows a fire spreading through the forest and burning trees and underbrush. The film shows a ruined mill left in ashes (03:40). Some homes are damaged; pieces of destroyed machinery from the mill sit amid the ash and rubble. The small town is now a ghost town. The film presents several good shots of Canadian forests (05:10), footage of a man riding in a sled pulled by dogs, and footage of men building a log cabin (05:47). Next, viewers see some of the machines used at a working lumber mill: a band saw runs; a chipper spews mulch into a pile; and a crane hoists large logs (06:44). Upriver from the mill, logs are floated down. A handful of men unclog a logjam on the river. Two men cut down a massive tree, possibly a Douglas fir (07:44). Logs are lowered down onto the bed of a semitruck, which then hauls the logs away (08:10). At the lumber mill, a lumber straddle carrier picks up lumber and moves it (09:09). Soft wood tree logs cover the entire surface of a river (09:30). At a pulp mill, rolls of paper are moved for transportation. A man stamps prints onto wood boards used for wooden shipping boxes (10:33). The film shows several shots of water moving over leaf-covered ground, and a few shots of creeks and larger rivers. A hydroelectric dam harnesses the energy of a river (12:00). There is more footage of Canada’s wilderness (12:36): waterfalls, lakes, and people enjoying being outside in the forest. From a fire tower (13:16), a lookout spots rising smoke and calls in the potential fire. Fire fighters ride out from the station on a truck to the scene of the fire (13:55). Men build a fire line (14:34), clearing brush and digging a small trench. Several fire fighters hook a hose up to a portable water pump (15:03). A man sprays water from a portable backpack tank onto a small blaze (15:35). There is a good shot of smoke rising with a mountain in the background, followed by footage of billowing smoke from large forest fires. Flames rise above the tree line of a forest. A man carefully puts out a match while in the forest (17:20). The film concludes with various shots of trees from Canada’s forests.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
