Script | LEAD: SCRIPT: (SUGGESTED TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO)The cause of the fatal crash of the galaxy Lockheed Electra three months ago is still a mystery What has been determined to date through the federal investigation is that heavy vibrations in the plane develop seconds after takeoff It is now suspected the vibrations were caused by a small service door accidentally left open on the underside of one wing The pilot tried to return to the airport for an emergency landing, but the plane apparently stalled lost altitude and crashed about two miles south of Reno International Airport All the three of the 71 people on board were killed in the crash Two of the victims died days later in Nevada hospitals 17 year old George Lampson Jr of St Paul, who miraculously sustained only minor injuries when he was thrown clear of the wreckage was the only survivor He is scheduled to be one of the first witnesses who will testify this week at the hearing conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board, also scheduled to testify as the owner of Galaxy airlines Philip Sheridan Since the crash, his airline has come under scrutiny as its financial problems and maintenance records of its aircraft have been analyzed Sheridan has insisted the plane was properly maintained prior to the crash Very interested in what comes out of the hearings this week are the Twin Cities law firms who represent the survivors of many of the crash victims suits have already been filed against Galaxy airlines, in which collectively millions of dollars are being sought in damages for the relatives of the people who were killed here Dave Andrews, Channel Five Eyewitness News in Reno, Nevada TAG: MNH |
