Script (SUGGESTED TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO) 00:00 Trying to soften up his opponent Before the debates, the President has opened up a Russian front in the character war on Bill Clinton last night on CNN, Larry King suggesting Clinton isn't telling the truth about his anti war activities, including a 1969 student trip to the Soviet Union I was just saying, I'm just saying level with the American people on the draft, on whether he went to Moscow, how many demonstrations he led against his own country from a foreign soil level Tell us the truth Clinton admits demonstrating against the Vietnam War while a student at Oxford and traveling to Moscow, but he insists the two are not connected, and says he's outraged the Bush campaign would question his patriotism I just think it's sad I mean, it's his campaign has sunk to a new level I mean, it's just amazing I think it's sad But speaking to reporters this morning, the President refused to apologize I thought I expected what's on my heart last night pretty well Mr Bush promised more of the same, and later, in New Orleans, delivered citing an article in today's USA Today listing what he called Clinton flip flops, the American people have a clear choice this November between an experienced leader with a clear global vision and a governor with no international experience who can't seem to make a decision on any issue at all any day of the week 01:26 Members of the campaign staff jumped in as well Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater saying Clinton can't seem to tell the truth, while political director Mary Madeline called him an untrustworthy liar, that it is a pathological, pathological pattern of deception He is an obsessive politician When he has been asked about his anti war activities in the past, he has hedged, bobbed and weaved That may seem far fetched to many, but the idea is to keep building doubts about Clinton in voters minds, hoping to convince them to give the president another chance by the time the debates begin
