TAPE_NUMBER: EN9948 IN_TIME: 11:34:31 LENGTH: 01:48 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: No access Internet FEED: SCRIPT: xfa Story: 2000 Ball Location: New York Date: 1st December 1999 The new Times Square Millennium Ball has been successfully tested in New York in preparation for New Year's Eve. The ball and the number "2000" were test-lit in a warehouse in the Bronx. At midnight on New Year's Eve, the ball will make its usual voyage down the flagpole atop One Times Square - only bigger and brighter than ever. This year's celebration will be the largest New Year's Eve event ever in Times Square's 95-year history and will include a live, multi-media programme lasting for 24 hours. To the relief of the producers of Times Square 2000, the test lighting of the new millennium ball - complete with practice countdown - was a success. The new ball, which is covered with 504 Waterford Crystal triangles featuring the original "Star of Hope" design, will makes its real debut in less than a month. Although the test lighting did not utilise the full power that will be used, the ball is illuminated by 600 multi-coloured light bulbs, 96 high intensity strobe lights and 92 rotating pyramid mirrors. But the millennium ball is just one of the elements of the 'Times Square 2000' show. In size and scope, the event will be many times larger and more eventful than any previous Times Square countdown. The theme for the party is a global one. Up to a (m) million people are expected in the Times Square area and over one (b) billion people will watch it on television. A 24-hour live telecast on Times Square will show each time zone as it enters the new millennium. From its global theme to audience size, New Year's Eve in Times Square is sure to be monumental. But for once, the celebration is not only about New Yorkers. The lighting of the millennium ball will highlight a production that includes more than 500 dancers, actors, musicians and puppeteers from all over the world. There will be 160 professional puppets, from a spry "Baby Time" to a sprawling Chinese dragon the size of a city bus. There will also be a 12 hour long sound score, multi-media special effects with pyrotechnics and four tons of confetti and other airborne decorations. And as the count down happens, the world famous Times Square New Year's Eve Ball slides down a pole high above Times Square. The ball, designed by Waterford Crystal, is a massive 6 feet in diameter (1.8 metres) and weighs at an enormous 1,070 pounds (486 kilos). The surface of the glittering sphere is decorated with crystal triangles. For this year's celebration, Waterford has created a brand new "Hope For Abundance" design featuring symbols from nature. The first ball-lowering celebration atop One Times Square was held in 1907 and the event has continued as a proud tradition for the past 92 years. The countdown to the New Year got off to an early start on Friday as swordsman Bernard Ganter demonstrated his rather individual technique for opening the traditional bottle of champagne. People cheered as the bubbly was poured into a 600-glass pyramid built in the Square. Elsewhere, however, there was less to celebrate. In many areas, preparations for the New Year festivities have been badly disrupted by the winter storms that blanketed the East Coast with snow. Over a foot of snow (30 centimetres) had fallen over New York by mid-afternoon, forcing all three of the city's airports to close. Workers in Times Square were on hand to clear the snow as it accumulated on the pavement. New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said the New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square would go on as planned. "Cancel the New Year's celebration?" he said. "Ha, ha!" SHOTLIST: New York, USA - December 29 & 30, 2000, Recent and File TSTV (Times Square TV) December 31,1999 1.
