SOUL TRAIN MUSIC AWARDS HONOUR 17th CROP OF STARS
Some of the hottest stars in hip hop, R&B and gospel his the red carpet of the 17th Annual Soul Train Music Awards tempted Saturday night, for the Pasedena award ceremony.
The awards show, near Los Angeles, California, traditionally recognizes excellence in urban music. This year was no different - the lineup included performances by special honorees Mariah Carey, and rappers LL Cool J, and Nelly.
Light rain-showers in Los Angeles failed to dampen spirits, even if specially chosen outfits risked getting damp.
R&B singer and Soul Train nominee Amerie arrived in a sheer black creation by David Dalrymple and Louis Vuiton pumps. R&B recording star Truth Hurts wore an original creation from a Los Angeles area boutique, while Heather Headley wore head-to toe Yves Saint Laurent.
R&B recording star Tyrese arrived with his backup dancers wearing corset-back mini dresses. Superstar rap group Dru Hill wore camouflage fatigues to make an anti-war statement, and to show support for American troops abroad. Up and coming singer Ryan Star made fashion waves of her own in an ensemble she designed for the occasion. Star is part of a new crop of talent from the Fox TV show "American Idol."
Ashanti and Musiq took top honours at the awards ceremony. Ashanti won best female R&B soul single for "Foolish" and best album for "Ashanti," beating out Erykah Baduh and India Arie.
Musiq won for best male R&B soul single for the second year in a row with "Dontchange." He won best album in the same category with "Juslisen," beating Maxwell and Justin Timberlake, and last year's winner, Usher.
The Soul Train awards reserved career achievement recognition for pop and R&B diva Mariah Carey, and rappers LL Cool J and Nelly.
Carey accepted the Quincy Jones Outstanding Career Achievement for a female award. Mariah Carey has sold more than 150,000,000 records. She is the only artist since the Beatles and Michael Jackson to have so many number one singles and albums. She is also the only female artist to have straight number one singles and albums. In the music world, she is known for her ability to reach eight octaves. Carey sings two octaves higher than the normal soprano.
Many of Carey's peers credit her with trailblazing and taking control of her professional life. Soul Train Award winner and recording artist Amerie says Mariah Carey was a major influence in her own career.
LL Cool J was also honoured with the Quincy Jones Award for Outstanding Career Achievement for a male. The multi-talented rapper was praised by his peers for his versatility and longevity in the music industry.
LL Cool J is considered one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. The multi-platinum selling artist has also acted alongside Hollywood A-list talent like Whoopi Goldberg, James Woods, Al Pacino and Jamie Lee Curtis to name but a few.
The voting body of the Soul Train Awards includes active professionals in the fields of radio station programming, retail sales and management, and recording artists with records that reach one or more music trade publication charts during a one-year period.
