We also support Mr Ahmadinejad, whatever he decides." 23. Wide of Tajrish square with snowy mountains in background 24. Women walking in street 25. Wide of Tajrish square with snowy mountains in background STORYLINE Residents in the Iranian capital Tehran struck a defiant note on Tuesday in the face of international pressure over the country's nuclear activities and the ban on US broadcaster CNN, which was lifted earlier in the day. "I think Iran should have the right to uranium enrichment just like other countries," retired government employee Shahram Safayi said. He was commenting following a flurry of meetings by world powers over how to react to Iran's decision last week to remove UN seals from its uranium enrichment facility and resume small-scale enrichment. On Monday, envoys of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council as well as Germany met in London. Afterwards, a British spokesman said the US, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia had expressed "serious concerns" about Iran's move and agreed that Iran should suspend fully its nuclear activities and return to negotiations. Meanwhile on Tuesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Tajikistan as controversy continued at home over CNN's activities in Iran. Iran lifted its ban on the US television network earlier on Tuesday, a day after the government barred it from the country because of its mistranslation of nuclear comments by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, state television reported. But Tehran residents expressed their anger over the matter. University student, Rasool Momeni said CNN should "reflect the truth". Ahmadinejad ordered the reversal "due to the expression of an apology" from CNN over the mistake, the state-run TV broadcast said. Iran imposed the ban on Monday after CNN misquoted the president as speaking of "nuclear weapons" when he actually referred to "nuclear technology." CNN admitted the mistake in a broadcast. Hardliners called the mistranslation a "deliberate" act by CNN to misrepresent Iran's position at a crucial moment in international negotiations. In its apology, the Atlanta-based CNN said on Monday it had "quoted Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying that Iran had the right to build nuclear weapons". "In fact, he said that Iran had the right to nuclear energy. He added that 'a nation that has civilisation does not need nuclear weapons and our nation does not need them'." The United States accuses Iran of secretly aiming to build nuclear weapons, but Iran denies the charge, insisting its nuclear programme is solely for generating electricity.

In Venezuela, about 30 people gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Caracas. Protesters chanted slogans and displayed banners one of which read "I promise not to forgive or forget." Meanwhile in eastern Baghdad, around a thousand demonstrators protested on Monday. Waving Palestinian and Iraqi flags, the protesters - supporters of anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr - chanted "No, no to Israel." A senior aide to al-Sadr, Imam Abdul Hadi al-Mohammadamdawi, spoke of what he described as "the bloody history of Israel" and the "horrible crime" they are committing in Gaza. Separately in Iraq on Monday, the party of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki issued a statement condemning the Israeli attacks, calling on Islamic countries to cut relations with Israel and end all "secret and public talks" with it. Meanwhile Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed a session of the Iranian cabinet in Tehran on Sunday evening. At the meeting, President Ahmadinejad denounced Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip. Ahmadinejad also urged the Iranian cabinet to file an international complaint against Israeli leaders including President Shimon Perez and Defence Minister Ehud Barak, calling them "war criminals" and "wolves". The Iranian Government has also decided to send envoys to Arab countries, to convey messages from President Ahmadinejad about the Israeli-Palestinian situation. In Indonesia on Monday, students staged a pro-Palestinian rally in Jakarta. Several hundred demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans at the downtown Hotel Indonesia traffic circle. The Indonesian Health Ministry has pledged 200-thousand US dollars in medical supplies for the victims.

CLINTON ON CNN DEFENDING OBAMA COMMENTS
[CLINTON ON CNN DEFENDING OBAMA COMMENTS] [USA] FTG OF PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON (D-NY) ON CNN'S THE SITUATION ROOM DEFENDING COMMENTS BY SENATOR BARACK OBAMA CALLING HER "BUSH-CHENEY LITE" 16:14:29 BEGINNING OF SEGMENT INTRODUCED BY WOLF BLITZER / JOHN KING SEGMENT BLITZER: There's no letting up in the war of words under way between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama that began on our debate stage Monday night. Today, Obama is accusing Clinton of embracing a Bush-Cheney lite brand of diplomacy, and now Clinton is firing right back. Let's bring in our chief national correspondent, John King. Tell us a little bit more about what's going on. But you spent time with Senator Clinton today. JOHN KING, CNN CHIEF NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: I did. And this is in the middle of this remarkable back-and-forth between the two top candidates in the Democratic race for president. Senator Obama started the latest round this morning. He's campaigning up in New Hampshire, and he pinned what Democrats would consider a most unfriendly label on the Democratic front-runner. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) SEN. BARACK OBAMA (D-IL), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I don't want a continuation of Bush/Cheney. I don't want Bush-Cheney lite. I want a fundamental change. It's time to turn the page on how we do business and say to the world, we are ready to lead. We are ready to lead by deed and example. (END VIDEO CLIP) KING: Now, it's safe to assume being compared to the current president and vice president didn't go down too well with Mrs. Clinton. In an interview with CNN, she suggested her rival was abandoning his promise of smear-free campaigning. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) SEN. HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON (D-NY), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: This is getting kind of silly. You know, I've been called a lot of things in my life, but I've never been called George Bush or Dick Cheney, certainly. You know, you have to ask, whatever has happened to the politics of hope? (END VIDEO CLIP) KING: Amid all this sniping, both senators holding firm on the question that started the dustup back Monday night, Senator Obama's statement that he would be quickly to meet as president with the leaders of rogue nations that President Bush has refused to deal with. Leaders like the president of Iran and Venezuela and Cuba. Mrs. Clinton says it's irresponsible to make such a promise up front without first doing some delicate diplomacy. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) OBAMA: If we want fundamental change, then we can't be afraid to talk to our enemies. We can't be afraid. I'm not afraid of losing the P.R. war to a dictators. I'm happy to look them in the eye and say what needs to be said. I'm happy to tell them what I think. I'm not going to avoid them. I'm not going to be -- hide behind a bunch of rhetoric. (END VIDEO CLIP) (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) CLINTON: I have been saying consistently for a number of years now, we have to end the Bush era of ignoring problems, ignoring enemies and adversaries. And I have been absolutely clear that we've got to return to robust and effective diplomacy. But I don't want to see the power and prestige of the United States president put at risk by rushing in to meetings with the likes of Chavez and Castro and Ahmadinejad. (END VIDEO CLIP) KING: Senator Clinton conceding in that interview, Wolf, that it's getting a little bit more personal a little earlier than she anticipated. She says, though, we're in an intense phase of the Democratic primaries. Her campaign thinking Obama is nervous because he hasn't been able to move the poll numbers by being the candidate of hope, as he likes to put it, by not attacking his rivals. The Obama says, no way. They think Mrs. Clinton represents the past and that voters will embrace his new approach. BLITZER: Because from his camp, you get the word, well, he raised a lot more money and a lot -- a significant -- significantly more money than she did, and he's narrowing the gap in some of the national polls. KING: He is. And they understand, the Obama camp, they cannot back down on this point, because the fundamental question here is not just what he said in the debate. It is the question of, is he experienced enough to be president? If they blink and give into Senator Clinton on this one, they believe in the Obama campaign it will open the door to even more attacks on that. They know on this one, the first big fight between the two at the top, they can't back down. BLITZER: All right, John. Thanks very much. 16:18:06 END OF SEGMENT

Parliamentarian Page: 1 Printed: 27/October/2010 17:35:50 101027#013 According to organizers, over 80,000 people were expected to take place in protests. Parliamentarian opposition members said that over 100,000 people are protesting in the street, while inside the Parliament building the opposition and the ruling coalition are debating a motion of no-confidence tabled by the Liberals and the Social Democrats. However, the gendarmes estimated that only a half of the expected number of protesters took part in the scheduled protest demonstration. Several protesters tried to pass through the protection fences set up by security forces around the Parliament building. Mr Gorbachev said that the US had no alternative but to withdraw its forces if it wanted to avoid another Vietnam. As Soviet leader, he pulled his troops out of Afghanistan more than 20 years ago after a 10-year war. He praised President Barack Obama for his decision to begin withdrawing troops next year, but said the US would struggle to get out of the situation. "Victory is impossible in Afghanistan. Obama is right to pull the troops out. No matter how difficult it will be," Mr Gorbachev said in an interview with the BBC's Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg. He said before the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan, an agreement had been reached with Iran, India, Pakistan and the US. "We had hoped America would abide by the agreement that we reached that Afghanistan should be a neutral, democratic country, that would have good relations with its neighbours and with both the US and the USSR. "The Americans always said they supported this, but at the same time they were training militants - the same ones who today are terrorising Afghanistan and more and more of Pakistan," Mr Gorbachev said. Because of this, it would be more difficult for the US to get out of the situation. Page: 4 Printed: 27/October/2010 17:35:50 101027#004 "But what's the alternative - another Vietnam? Sending in half-a-million troops? That wouldn't work." The best that Nato could hope to achieve, he said, was to help the country get back on its feet and rebuild itself after the war. Mr Gorbachev also addressed the situation inside Russia today, saying democracy was experiencing problems. "I am very concerned, we're only half way down the road from a totalitarian regime to democracy and freedom. And the battle continues. There are still many people in our society who fear democracy and would prefer a totalitarian regime." He said the ruling party, led by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, "has been doing everything it can to move away from democracy, to stay in power". Obama is right to pull the troops out, no matter how difficult it will be. Before we pulled Soviet troops out of Afghanistan we discussed the issue with different forces inside Afghanistan -- with Iran, India, Pakistan and of course with America. We had hoped America would abide by the agreement we reached that Afghanistan should be a neutral, democratic country that would have good relations with its neighbours and with both the US and the USSR. The Americans always said they supported this. But at the same time they were training militants, the same ones that today are terrorising Afghanistan and more and more of Pakistan. So it will be more difficult for America to get out of this situation. But what's the alternative? Another Vitenam? Sending in half a million troops? That wouldn't work."

Various of sailors in room STORYLINE: One of the British sailors detained by Iran for nearly two weeks said on Monday, that she was threatened with the possibility of not seeing her daughter again. "You have got the guys who were like, 'do you want to see your daughter again?' And that's the way they kinda like used that against me, and that was horrible," Leading Seaman Faye Turney, 25, told Britain's ITV "Tonight" programme. "That was the point where I shut off from them, I was like, I'm not playing your games, you're sick," she added. Turney's comments come as the released sailors and marines faced criticism after pictures of them laughing and playing games were aired on Iranian television on Monday. One of the sailors, Lieutenant Felix Carman told British broadcaster Sky News, that they were all genuinely happy in the pictures. "We had been in solitary confinement for the previous 12 days and to be reunited, to have a game of chess or to play table tennis was absolutely fantastic for us," said Carman. He went on to say that people have started to realise that "what we went through was actually quite an ordeal," and that he was glad "the truth has come out." The 15 British Navy personnel were captured in the Persian Gulf on March 23, and freed last week by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who called their release a gift to Britain. Iran said the British crew was in its waters, but Britain denies the charge. Iran says the latest video footage refutes claims by the sailors and marines that they were mistreated. The footage comes three days after several of the crew told reporters they had been blindfolded, isolated in cold stone cells, tricked into fearing execution, and coerced into falsely saying they had entered Iranian waters. The eight sailors and seven marines were released last week after 13 days in captivity. The video clips, which were aired on Iran's state-run Arabic satellite TV channel Al-Alam, showed sailors and marines dressed in track suits playing chess and table tennis. In the footage, crew members could be heard laughing and chatting, and were seen eating sandwiches and snacks. The crew reported having been under constant psychological pressure and being threatened with seven years in prison if they did not say they intruded into Iranian waters. Meanwhile, the British government on Monday temporarily banned all military service members from talking to media for payment, after withering criticism for having allowed sailors and marines to be paid large sums for their story of captivity in Iran. The announcement by Defence Secretary Des Browne will not affect any of the 15 service members who already have talked to media, a Defence Ministry spokesman said. But it will bar the others from reaching new deals with media outlets.
