Tim Conway Tells a Funny Story About His Time in the Army - Part 03
Tim Conway: And then another one, I had fire duty. That’s when you put coal in the furnace every two hours to keep the buildings warm. *motions shoveling coal* every two hours, on, off. So I put all the coal in at eight o’clock, every lump there was. It was about ten after nine when I heard the first fire engine. And I looked out and I thought; boy that’s a big one! The hospital was not on fire but it was full of smoke and all these guys were running out of it. And so again, I'm there with the guys again and they said, “I don’t understand, what excuse do you have for this?” And I go, “Well I know I was wrong, but consider this. I actually think it was a miracle because a lot guys would fake illness and go to the hospital so they wouldn’t have to do all this junk. A lot of guys had to carried into that hospital. But if you saw that evening there were guys running out of that hospital. I consider that kind of a miracle.” And they stared at me and said back to the rocks. And I painted them white again. 2 months this time because because they went on both sides of the road. So that was my experience with the army. But I enjoyed it. I loved getting clothes, new shoes, boots. Boy, you looked sharp, everybody looked the same, you didn’t have to worry about clothing anybody.
