HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS BRAVED BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES TO CHEER THEM ON. NINETEEN TEAMS ARE INVOLVED IN THE 330-MILE RACE ALONG THE NORTH SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR TO GRAND PORTAGE. THE RACE IS NAMED AFTER A LEGENDARY MEMBER OF THE GRAND PORTAGE BAND OF CHIPPEWA WHO DELIVERED MAIL BY DOG SLED ALONG THE NORTH SHORE IN THE LATE 1800'S.
