The way of life of local residents is under threat from the destruction of the surrounding rainforest by logging and clearance for non-native crops and cattle. Local produce relies on the consistent rainfall seen in rainforests, driven in part by transpiration from mature trees. Too much deforestation will reduce this beyond a critical level, and the climate will flip to that of a much drier savannah, which will not support the current flora.
