Various of fires burning in bushland STORYLINE: Firefighters in Australia on Friday were continuing to battle more than 35 blazes across two states, although residents who were evacuated in central Queensland on Thursday have now been allowed to return to their homes, Australian television reported. A fire at Brooms Head on the New South Wales north coast flared up again on Thursday night fuelled by gusty wind conditions, while blazes near Grafton are also causing concern, reports said. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service has called in reinforcements from Sydney to help tackle the blazes over the weekend. Around 100 firefighters and 10 tankers are expected to arrive in the area on Friday afternoon, Channel 9 reported. Firefighters are hoping to re-establish containment lines on Friday to prevent the blaze threatening houses. Crews in Queensland are still fighting 34 blazes across the state, including several near Rockhampton which forced residents to evacuate overnight on Thursday, television reports said. Residents were allowed to return to their properties Friday and asked to remain vigilant. Smoke was reducing visibility on roads in both states, and motorists were advised to slow down and turn on headlights when travelling through affected areas. A total fire ban remains in place in Queensland until Monday.
