Though temperatures dipped into the 20's, high winds that could have grounded the popular giant balloons didn't turn up. The balloons are barred from the parade if winds reach 23 mph under guidelines set after a 1997 accident seriously hurt one spectator. Among the balloons was a new 40-foot-tall Mickey Mouse making a return after an 18 year absence. The procession included 14 big helium balloons, 20 floats, 14 marching bands, and 29 units of clowns. Thanksgiving Day is meant to celebrate a meal between colonists and Indians in the U-S 400 years ago. The holiday, however, has been protested by some descendants of tribal peoples, who say the arrival of the English settlers was nothing to celebrate. Many Indians were killed by the settlers. Medium shot of victim loaded into ambulance STORYLINE: Two spectators were hurt in the US city of New York on Thursday as people lined the streets to watch the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. A woman and a child were injured when a giant balloon snagged a street light in Times Square and caused part of it to fall into the crowd. The balloon's tethers got tangled on the head of the street lamp, and the piece crashed to the ground. Following the incident, the victims were said to be in a stable condition at the Bellevue Hospital emergency room. Earlier, there had been concerns that high wind would force officials to ground the parade's giant balloons. Guidelines limiting the use of balloons on windy Thanksgivings were put in place after a spectator was severely injured by a wayward balloon in 1997. But early on Thursday morning, parade officials decided the weather was suitable for the use of balloons. Children of all ages turned out to watch the parade which included balloons of Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer, the parade's first Latina balloon character, and Scooby-Doo, as well as children's characters such as Barney, Garfield, Big Bird and Charlie Brown. The balloons shared top billing with 10 marching bands and 27 floats and performers. Temperatures hovered at around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celcius), and rain was limited to a sprinkle. The Macy's parade was started in 1924 and has been an annual tradition. It was only cancelled once - during the World War II years of 1942 to 1944.

Santa waving STORYLINE: The 82nd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade made its way through Manhattan streets under sunny skies on Thursday, as thousands of marchers carried giant balloons past throngs of people celebrating the US harvest holiday. The atmosphere along the route was upbeat and jovial and parade celebrities included Miley Cyrus, star of the television show "Hannah Montana". New balloons this year were Buzz Lightyear, the square-jawed, action-figure astronaut from the 1995 film "Toy Story," Horton, the compassionate elephant of Dr. Seuss books, and a Smurf, a blue, gnome-like creature. The parade also was to feature 28 floats, 10 marching bands and performances by Miley Cyrus, Trace Adkins, James Taylor and the Radio City Rockettes. Organisers said more than a (m) million spectators viewed the 82nd annual parade in person, with another 50 (m) million watching on television. The 2.5-mile parade route winds from Central Park West and West 77th Street to Herald Square, in front of Macy's flagship store. Macy's is marking its 150th anniversary this year. The temperature was around 41 degrees with a wind of around 7 mph (11.5 kph), well below city guidelines for grounding the balloons. Those protocols were established after 45 mph winds drove a Cat in the Hat balloon into a metal pole during the 1997 parade, leaving a woman in a coma. The balloons were lowered to a maximum of 17 feet on a stormy Thanksgiving Day 2006. The parade, which began in 1924, was cancelled for two years during World War II. Besides watching Thanksgiving Day parades, millions of Americans prepared for a day featuring football and family dinners with too much food on the table.

Pan across Charlie Brown balloon STORYLINE: Hundreds turned out in New York on a cold, blustery afternoon on Wednesday to watch preparations for the annual Thanksgiving Day parade put on by large downtown department store Macy's. Giant balloons were being inflated for the parade on Thursday. Making their debut in the 2002 parade will be balloons of Charlie Brown trying to kick the ever-elusive football, and Nickelodeon's Little Bill, said to be the first African-American balloon in the parade. Kermit the Frog also returns to the parade after a 12-year absence. Before Santa and his reindeer bring it to a close, the parade will feature one thousand cheerleaders, 500 clowns, 25 floats, 12 marching bands, 10 novelty balloons, four toy floats and three "falloons", as Macy's hybrid balloon-floats have been dubbed. The National Weather Service is forecasting mostly sunny, cold weather for Thursday, with high temperatures in the mid 30s and light winds during the parade. The balloons are withdrawn from the parade if the wind speed exceeds 23 miles per hour (37 kilometres per hour) or the gusts are stronger than 34 miles per hour (55 kilometres per hour). Those guidelines were adopted after strong winds in 1997 caused the Cat in the Hat balloon to veer away from its handlers and slam into a lamppost, raining debris on onlookers. One injured spectator was in a coma for 24 days.

We're a little discouraged with the forecast, but we are still very hopeful and optimistic, and we've got a great parade and we're hoping that the balloons will fly. But the bands and the cheerleaders, the floats and the parade is going to march on." 16. Wide shot of site STORYLINE: As the giant Snoopy and Big Bird balloons began to inflate, forecasts for powerful wind gusts threatened to keep them grounded during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday instead of floating through the corridors of Manhattan. City guidelines, established after a woman was seriously injured by a wayward balloon in 1997, call for the event's trademark inflatable characters to be grounded if winds reach 23 mph (37 kph) and gusts exceed 34 mph (55 kph). The National Weather Service said wind gusts could reach 35 mph Thursday, and rain and temperatures in the 40s Fahrenheit (5-10 degrees Celsius) were forecast. Seven newly installed wind-measuring devices along the parade route will help city officials decide before the parade starts Thursday morning whether conditions are safe enough for the balloons to fly. If the weather does not cooperate, parade organizers have some flexibility in flying the balloons. Some of the balloons could be tethered to vehicles and essentially act as floats. The parade will also have a handful of balloonicles _ balloons powered by motorized vehicles _ that are less susceptible to wind conditions. Organizers say the Macy's balloons were grounded only once in the parade's 80-year history _ in 1973 because of severe weather conditions. Thirty-three floats, almost a dozen marching bands from across the country, and celebrities including Barry Manilow, Gloria Estefan and Ciara will participate in the parade, regardless of the weather. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he looks forward to seeing all the children line the parade route. "I love the balloons and the bands and everything and the excitement. But it's the kids. You look at them and their faces, it's what America's all about, he said." John Piper, who directs the Macy's studio where they make the balloons and floats, said he is most excited for people to see a hot-air balloon created for this year's event, inspired by Around the World in 80 Days Keyword-wacky
