Close up band playing STORYLINE: The crowds at the Mardi Gras parades were smaller than previous years in New Orleans as celebrations on Tuesday built toward its boozy climax in the hurricane-buckled city that could use a few laughs. The culmination of the eight-day pre-Lenten bash fell nearly six months after the August 29 storm that smashed thousands of homes and killed more than 1,300 people, the vast majority of them in New Orleans. Even amid the typical debauchery - including early morning drinking, flashes of bare breasts and skimpy costumes in the French Quarter - there was no escaping reminders of the storm. The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, the 97-year-old predominantly black club, paraded amid homes that still bear dirty brown water marks from the floodwaters that covered 80 percent of the city. Zulu - the 97-year-old Mardi Gras club that lost 10 members to Katrina - staged its annual parade on Tuesday with actual Zulu warriors from South Africa, a first for the group. Mayor Ray Nagin, who dressed up in National Guard uniform, said he was happy with the turnout, particularly the number of children who had come along. Despite partly sunny weather and mild temperatures, the crowds were smaller than usual in a city that still has less than half its pre-storm population of almost a half-million. Finding a prime parade-watching spot was not hard.

Residents and visitors alike enjoyed alcohol and exchanged beads in the famous French Quarter's Bourbon street on Saturday night. "Everybody has amazing outfits on, there's hairstyle, clothing, shoes... it's crazy. Tourism officials expect at least as many visitors as the 700,000 who partied in 2006 for the annual celebration - this year is the second time the event has been held since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. New Orleans is slowly recovering from Katrina, the signs of which are still obvious in swathes of the city, but largely unnoticeable to those who stay in the touristy French Quarter and central business district. For local officials, the festivities are a chance for New Orleans to get an economic boost - many of the city's small businesses have struggled since Katrina. New Orleans police are hoping visitors and residents have fun, without a significant increase in crime. Police have increased security on Bourbon Street, the popular site during Mardi Gras. Early on Friday (16 February), a shooting in a Mid-City nightclub wounded six people, one critically. The gunman got out in the stampede of patrons, police said. In a separate incident, three people were shot and two died in a car parked in the Ninth Ward on Thursday night (15 February), far from the heart of the Mardi Gras celebrations. Sergeant Joe Narcisse, a police spokesman, told AP Television on Friday that locals and visitors has no reason to be concerned, provided they took proper precautions. Spurred on by bright sunshine and 70-degree temperatures, huge crowds got an early start on Mardi Gras today, jamming the parade routes and the French Quarter.They were already in place hours before the first big parades rolled, and police said the numbers were bigger than any in recent memory.Clarinetist Pete Fountain, always one of the first onto the parade route, lurched out of his lair in the Garden District shortly after dawn and headed toward the French Quarter with actor John Goodman in tow.Fountain and Goodman were costumed as princes, accompanied by the raucous members of his half-fast walking club dressed as frogs.Behind him was a long day of parades, including Zulu, the predominantly black parody of the High Society Blue Bloods, which was delayed by a broken down float. In their grass skirts and black-face makeup, members of Zulu clear the way for Rex, King of Carnival.Selected as Rex, one of the highest social awards of the city, was Robert Boh, chairman of the board of Boh Brothers Construction Company.Along the parade route, families were already camped out - some there overnight.
