STORYLINE
Rescuers from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol two people from rushing flood waters that engulfed much of Kingfisher in Oklahoma on Sunday.
Television pictures showed a Highway Patrol hovered over the two stranded people.
An officer, utilising minimal safety equipment, pulled the elderly women out of the water first and clung onto the skids of the helicopter, while holding onto the women.
After travelling a short distance, the woman fell back into the flood waters from the low-flying helicopter.
She was picked up again almost immediately and told to sit on the skids of the helicopter and this time was successfully transported to dry land.
The helicopter then returned to rescue the second victim.
The couple had been riding in a pick-up truck down Highway 81 when their vehicle was swept away by flood waters.
The region has been plagued by floodwaters resulting from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erin.
