STORYLINE
A family living in New Zealand had a surprising visit this weekend.
A meteorite crashed through the roof of their house in the Auckland suburb of Ellerslie on Saturday.
Scientists initially were sceptical, but now agree that the one point three kilogrammes (2.9 pounds) rock came from space.
It is only the ninth meteor known to have landed in New Zealand.
Its rarity makes it valuable to collectors as well as scientists.
Joel Schiff, from Auckland University, said the circumstances of the meteor's discovery also add to its value: "Falling through a roof is really an exceptional event that rarely happens, and this is a beautiful large specimen."
Scientists plan to analyse the chemical composition of the meteorite to find out more about where it came from.
